Thyroid Management Daily Routine
Over the past year, I have dedicated myself to research and prayer, seeking ways to become a healthier version of myself. Before moving to California, I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism. For many people, this diagnosis may not seem severe—and in some ways, it isn’t. However, it can bring ongoing challenges, particularly hair thinning, weight gain, fatigue, and difficulty sleeping. I have experienced many of these symptoms over the last seven years. At times, they have felt like obstacles I would never overcome, but I have remained committed to improving my health.
Recently, I discovered that there are lifestyle approaches that may help support thyroid function alongside medical care. These changes require discipline and consistency. For me, this has meant eliminating or significantly reducing fast food, smoking, alcohol, binge eating, and sedentary habits. It has meant learning to prepare healthier meals, choosing whole and organic foods when possible, reading more, moving my body regularly, and being intentional about what I consume—both physically and mentally.
These are significant lifestyle adjustments, but they can place you on a path toward taking greater responsibility for your overall well-being and thyroid health.
Here is what a typical day looks like for me:
I wake up around 7:00 a.m. and begin my morning with tea made with lemon and moringa leaf powder. For breakfast, I usually have a cup of organic yogurt with a spoonful of raw local honey. Later in the morning, I may have one or two cups of coffee. While coffee is not considered ideal for thyroid health, I believe in balance and honesty—sometimes we all make room for small indulgences.
For lunch, I focus on protein and iodine-rich foods, such as boiled eggs with cheese or tuna with rice cakes. I also include a cup of green tea with cloves. Dinner can be more challenging, as my husband does not have dietary restrictions. However, he is supportive and enjoys whatever I prepare. Typically, dinner includes a balanced plate of quality protein, a starch, and two vegetables, seasoned well and made with wholesome ingredients.
Sleep has been one of my more persistent challenges, as insomnia is common among individuals with thyroid disorders. In the evening, I find that a cup of organic loose-leaf herbal “sleep” tea helps me unwind. Adding lavender can make it even more effective. I also prioritize creating a comfortable sleep environment—neither too warm nor too cold—since maintaining balance is essential when managing thyroid health.
Living with hypothyroidism requires attentiveness and personal responsibility. While it can feel demanding, I have learned that consistent, intentional choices can make a meaningful difference in how I feel each day.
