The Real Cost Commercial: "There’s a Contract in Every Cigarette"
What's the deal with E-Cigs?
Didn’t it seem like a great idea to find an alternative to cigarettes that didn’t smell as bad, create as much secondhand smoke, and cost as much? The common misconception is that e-cigarettes, often called e–cigs, are that savior. As much as America would like to believe that, we simply cannot. The reason for that being our children: the next generation, the ones who will eventually lead this country, and the ones who are still vulnerable to tricky advertising.
Children are curious little beings. They’re always exploring and learning. In the case of e-cigs, this could be dangerous. The liquids inside them have increased nicotine poisoning through exposure or ingestion by children. E-cigs are relatively new to our society so research on them is scarce. Doctors and lung specialists everywhere are urging Americans to wait to try them because of their unknown risks and benefits compares to regular cigarettes.
“The gravity of tobacco use on global health and the historical behavior of the tobacco industry that has included deceit about the health effects of tobacco, intentional marketing to children, and manipulating nicotine levels in cigarettes to maintain addiction should prompt us to proceed cautiously. Nicotine is central to lifelong addiction, and these are nicotine delivery devices.”
-Dean Schraufnagel, MD
Perhaps the most disturbing development of all is the fact that major tobacco companies such as Altria, the maker of Marlboro cigarettes, are trying to weasel their new products into the lives of young children by debuting new e-cigs with deceitful advertising techniques. Most every child in America has seen the movie Frozen, and since the tobacco companies know that, they are calling their newest campaign “Let it Glow,” which (as you may have guessed) plays off of the hit song “Let it Go” sang by Idina Menzel. Obviously, the song appeals to and attracts the younger generation. The point in doing this is to encourage children to start smoking sooner because research shows that the earlier you start, the greater the chance of addiction and dependency. Since it is illegal for children to purchase tobacco, their explanation for using a childhood phenomenon is that it appeals to adults as well. But they also sell e-cigs that are candy flavored to attract children! Action needs to be taken before America’s children are negatively affected.
This is a call for help. Talk to your local legislators about putting regulations in place to keep our children safe. Keep them happy and healthy. Don’t risk nicotine poisoning, lung cancer, or anything else tobacco is proven to cause. Electronic cigarettes aren’t all they’re cracked up to be, so make sure holiday lights are the only things glowing around your home this season.
Happy Holidays- make sure the Christmas tree is the only thing that you light up this season!
