Just a few thoughts on Actors and Fandom and how Parasocial Behaviour is ruining fandoms for the rest of us
Just been down the rabbit hole of tags related to a certain Marvel actor, Sebastian Stan, whom I like from an acting POV. Yes he's very pretty but also IMHO a good actor. Wanted to see what the reaction to his latest movie at Cannes was, as I like his acting choices outside of Marvel Fjord sounded very interesting.
Discovered a cesspool of parasocials crazies who've taken over the tag who are so obsessed with him on a personal level and his love life (whatever) that they are actually hoping his new movie fails.
But also unbelievabley misogynistic and ageist.
I've also never seen such misogyny towards a partner and the comments on her pregnancy are the work of insane people. Am not sure someone of them actually understand that pregnancy is not an illness and that your life doesnt go on hold. But then again American povs on these sort of things are antiquated and odd.
don't give 2 rats arses whether it's PR or real, or if he either gay or a womanizing slut. Apparently he's both. Good for him. As long as it's all consensual adults, u do who u want man.
But the amount of sheer time and effort put into the parasocial lunacy is amazing to read. You could use this as a thesis on the modern age of celebrity and social media
Yes I am old but I've seen craxy fans in my time. Let's not mention Jensen Ackles fans! But this level is mind boggling
They are having shipper wars over his love life. The misogyny towards his partner is horrific, even if you don't think it's real, some if those comments are simply vile. The agism is rife.
And they have so many opinions on his acting choices.
My favourite so far is the stop with the art movies that no one wants to watch and do a romcom or continue to loose his fan base.
Also how so many Marvel actors are failures outside of Marvel. Did you know that Scarlett Johansen's career is a flop? Me neither.
They have "serious" opinions of what his acting choices should be
Comedies and Romcoms apparently!
Yes all we want in cinema is more shite American Romcoms. Like actors should pick their roles on the basis of what the online crazy wants
BTW most American RomComs fails miserably at the box office and are critically panned. Remember kidlets there is actually a world outside of the USA and some actors choose to work in it.
I like actors who take chances, go beyond preconceptions about what they should do.
Pretty is fine but unless they can act they leave me cold. Hello Brad Pitt
But what really amazes me is the actual amount of time and effort these people spend on this. Its fascinating. Have they no jobs to do?
Its actually bizarre (the astrological charts re his life would actually be funny if not for the fact that some of them take it seriously).
But in the end it ruins the fandom for others and basically confirms all the crazy shite re obsessed female fans and fandom. Yes even pre the Internet, you know back in the Stone Age, certain fans were a bit obsessive but this is a complete mind boggling level
Of course certain posters gain kudos off of it and it makes them feel important." Look at me i know things, I have a special understanding."So they get the hits and love the attention and onwards goes the spiral.....
You know i am old. Over 50. They probably think i shouldnt have an opinion, just like the girlies who think people over 25 shouldnt be writing fanfic.
My philosophy is you either like an actors work or you don't.
Personally I don't like Chalamet or Cruise.
I'm a movie buff. I like big bad action and arthouse. My collection of "old"movies goes back decades. I like actors who break my preconceptions. Heh if they are pretty bonus points
But me I'm in it for the acting
I have a love/ hate relationship with fandom. I recognise i am a fan myself, old school con girlie here, but these "fans" make me embarrassed to be one. They've always existed but social media just takes it to new levels. Truly crazy
