surface-level analysis of Rosy Hues' visuals on company time
once my excitement settled down (i'm lying), it's finally time to take a closer look at the card. and there's actually a looot going on once you stop getting distracted by mr. i-don't-like-wearing-clothes.
flowers! so we have calla lilies, bird of paradise flowers, and baby's breath. i'm surely not a florist but i remember that i liked calla lilies visually since childhood, even tho i was told they were funeral flowers. and they indeed are often used in funeral sprays and casket arrangements. they symbolize purity, rebirth of the soul, and renewal. calla lilies also carry strong religious meaning.
but what i find interesting abt them here is their duality. we saw that with datura and brugmansia (devil's trumpet = angel's trumpet), smth deeply embedded in Sylus' lore. the same contrast appears here too – funeral imagery against wedding symbolism (purity in marriage = purity in death). duality has been such a strong motif in SylusMC's dynamic across all tls, and i genuinely appreciate intentionality behind it.
also, found that in chinese culture, white represents mourning and death, so the color symbolism here fits as well (*well, floral symbolism is generally very flexible and broad).
and then, there are bird of paradise flowers. they definitely stole my attention first. i had to squint and double-check whether this was real or just my delusional wishful thinking, but! it really looks like these already appeared in Shared Bliss (leaves and flowers match the shape).
which creates intriguing parallels with already established themes – freedom of choice and independence (central for both Sylus and MC, esp regarding autonomy within their relationship), flight imagery (echoing bird and wing motifs), luxury and high status (not surprising), loyalty, and once again subtle marriage symbolism (depends on the culture). *will i ever finish my post abt marriage in SylusMC?
their decision to include this flower again feels deliberate. possibly a way to weave some topics touched in Shared Bliss and Rosy Hues into one pattern. we'll see!
as for baby's breath, i don't think they need special attention (they're very common in floristry), but they pair very nicely with calla lilies – purity, everlasting love, and sincerity. and ofc, they're very marriage-coded.
other details! duality here isn't limited to flowers only. on the right side, we see a plate (or a wine bucket?) with a broken pomegranate and grapes.
the pomegranate, already a solid symbol for SylusMC, represents binding contracts (Persephone and Hades symbolism, esp in LAR plot + Sylus’ whole character in any representation heavily centred around contract relations, soul binding, etc), as well as death and rebirth and the cyclical and dualistic relationship between life and death. it's a messy fruit but worth the mess nonetheless. which feels fitting on multiple levels for both Sylus, MC, and their general dynamic.
grapes also symbolize rebirth and cycles. but one tiny detail caught my attention. it's possibly a stretch, but i'll mention it anyway. on the left side, 4 grapes grouped together and one placed separately – maybe it's nothing, maybe it's a nod to the number four's association with death and misfortune in chinese. who knows:)
well, wrapping up! i really love the bold color palette this time – vivid red paired with gold actually feels fresh compared to other cards. and all these small details full of layered meaning... i believe appearances are deceptive as usual (we played that game before), and we're for some important lore, maybe even the first steps toward Crimson Spirit in the current tl.
yep, that'll be a nice feast.
