SELF EVALUATION
To be honest and say, this experience of curation will be a remarkable event for me. It really surprises me, not only the result, also my teammates. All girls are extraordinary fabulous! Before the project, I always thought curation is a easy job, just grab every pieces of artwork which is interesting and put them together. I always prefer to have solo job. However during the curation, I realized how much work we need to take care of. Including managing time with artists to interview, to check the availability of artworks, keep contacting with the whole group, advertising, inventing people to the exhibition, checking the risk when setting all artworks on and etc.
As my habit, I would research before actually start. I went to London and visited many famous contemporary galleries including commercial and non-commercial galleries, then send them to the group chart, hopefully we can find out some inspirations of how can we linking every individual artwork together, also to show the best part of each artwork. Later we decided to make the exhibition “Marked” with the topic about female.
Abi has very strong ability to make everything organized, and she arranged interviews with all our artists with Laura, Molly and Emily. Rosie made flyers, while me and Amber made catalogue. Laura and Molly is arranging final presentation.
I’ve learned a lot during this project. In past I always keep doing my own art, reading books, thinking a lot and have my own idea. It’s quite isolate. I did have question about what is contemporary art? What’s the relationship between art and money? What were changed from art in today and art in 1960s? What’s the relationship between painting and photography? I do have many questions but I just used all my effort finding answers in books.
As I started do research for curation, I know its hard to make them look professional, even I don’t know what a professional exhibition should look like. Then I know I have to walk out to see galleries, not only for my group, also for myself. I’ll need to change and be mind open.
I saw photographs by Hiro in Hamiltons Gallery, also I saw “Autumn Cannibalism” by Dalí. All their frames are like dreams, and Dalí painted extra delicate just like photograph. But they are different. Thus I know painting can not take over photography, neither photography can take over painting. They are different.
It’s true that art world didn’t change that much from the past. Many contemporary galleries still exhibiting artworks which are produced 1950s, like Ecriture in White Cube, Installations in Marian Goodman Gallery. Just like what I wrote in my essay, its hard to find boundary of time between Modernism and Post-modernism, there is contemporary Modernism and contemporary Post-modernism. There isn’t old artwork and new artwork. There is artwork of the time.
Back to the curation. I’m so proud of my group and our exhibition.
