More on Jonouchi's fighting skills
Inspired by this post regarding Jonouchi not being much of a fighter in the anime, here’s a brief comparison.
First, let’s take a look at anime-Jonouchi’s completely futile attempt to punch Bandit Keith in the face.
What about manga-Jonouchi?
Yeah, he casually puts his hands in his pockets while kicking Keith’s butt, because that’s child’s play to him.
“Hey, Keith… you seem good at card games… but in a brawl I won’t lose.”
Oh good, you did it so I didn’t have to. I was planning to go more in depth in how anime-Jounouchi and manga-Jounouchi are pretty different in regards to fighting, but I think this sums it up nicely.
One thing I think a lot of people that are saying they like the anime version better–and don’t get me wrong, there are things I really love about the anime’s portrayal of Jounouchi–is that it DOES take away a key part of his character.
Jounouchi is an amazing fighter. This has been canon since the very earliest parts of the series where, for example, his biggest worry about taking on a guy with a GUN is whether or not Anzu could potentially get hurt. Fighting? One of Jounouchi’s amazing talents. And, as the series itself occasionally takes care to remind us, it’s not as though he has a metric ton of those.
So, yes, it does mean something when Jounouchi could beat Keith’s face in effortlessly, and instead, he CHOOSES instead to face him in a duel. Just like it meant something when Jounouchi said he could have beaten the crap out of Kaiba at the beginning of the Death-T arc, but instead he was going to support Yugi make sure HE was the one to face off against Kaiba.
It means that Jounouchi is handicapping himself. He is making a deliberate choice not to handle things with violence–something he’s GOOD at–and is instead restraining himself and mediating his conflict though non-violent (lol, for the most part) games. It means that Jounouchi is challenging himself. In his eyes, he’s bettering himself.
Rather than being a hot head that can’t control his temper, as he is in the anime, instead he’s very deliberately controlling himself. That’s really different! (Really, your perception of Jounouchi’s entire character should change when you read the manga and realize that when Jounouchi’s friends are getting in between him and Kaiba in Duelist Kingdom, they’re not protecting Jounouchi from getting hurt, they’re protecting Kaiba.)
Also I would like to think that a big part of Jonouchi’s choice of going “nonviolent” is his way to show how much he actually cares and respect Yugi. He knows Yugi ABHORS violence and when people get hurt. Also, before befriending Yugi, Jonouchi had pretty much given up on life, he was just going through life without a goal or purpose. I don’t doubt that Jonouchi would have ended up entangled in gangs or criminal activities growing up- not because it appealed to him, but because no-one he knew cared about him enough to make him care. The teachers we see doesn’t give a damn at best or are actively seeking to harm the students. His mom left with the person that meant the world to him as a child and he was raised by his alcoholic father that doesn’t seem to care all that much about him. (And if he cares, is shit at showing it). Yugi made Jonouchi want to be a better person, not just for his sake but also his own. Not just that but actually believe it was possible and something worth fighting for. Jonouchi holds Yugi in such high regards that their friendship is literally his “treasure”, something he takes more pride in than anything else. I could go in to such a rant about the finer points of the relationship between Jonouchi, Yugi and Yami… it’s so beautiful
Although i haven’t drawn ygo for a long time, I sill remember how to draw Atem.
Riding Duels. These duels evolved in the world of speed. The people with the legendary marks who risked their lives were known as 5D’s.
“This city is part of me. That’s why… whenever they come back it’ll be my duty to turn Neo Domino City, our hometown, the city rescued by Team 5D’s, into a stunning place that we can all take pride in”
“Taking pride in Neo Domino City like that is my duty.”
Ok who’s the wise ass at yugioh duel links
Happy Birthday Yusei! (7/7)
お誕生日おめでとう!遊星!!
Yugi is that guy that can win a game of strip poker without losing a single article of clothing.
“Yusei, I didn’t know you were burdened with those feelings. I’m sorry. I’m your friend. I should’ve noticed. But Yusei, I never thought for a second that you or your father ruined my life! So you don’t need to feel responsible! If I believed in destiny, it would only be about meeting you! Only about meeting you and Jack, two irreplaceable friends! Yusei, win for us!”
