I feel like Western fandoms often take it very literally when one character calls another their "brother" or "sister" 🤔

In many Asian cultures, it's actually quite common to refer to someone you respect as an older brother or sister, even when there's no family relation. It's also not unusual for couples to use terms that literally translate to "brother" or "sister" as affectionate nicknames for each other (e.g: 哥哥/妹妹, anh/em, adek/mas, 오빠 , etc) not in a literal sense, but more as terms of endearment or familiarity

Overall, these kinds of terms are often just forms of address rather than statements about an actual familial relationship, especially when the characters aren't blood-related 🤷🤷🤷

Sometimes they're simply a way of expressing closeness, care, or even a protective dynamic. Similar to going out and saying, "She's with me" to signal trust, responsibility, or companionship rather than romance.

(But not every Asian language uses them in the same way, so it's not a universal rule ykyk!!)
