Chris pinched his lips together. He hadn't thought much about whether people would accept what Viv was doing and their approach to the supernatural, but now he was starting to worry about what would happen if someone powerful enough disagreed with them. Still, that didn't change his determination. "I can't control whether people agree or disagree with my goals or anything we do here, but I hope they'll be willing to talk rather than resorting to violence. If the council or someone similar declares that something is off limits, I'll be disappointed but I'll abide by that decision."

"One can never know how people will react to controversy, and I think that is what you are looking at here," she said with a soft smile. "But don't let my words discourage you, simply see them as a the words of caution from someone with a different perspective."

"I should not take up more of your time," she made a move to get up and leave, but first she held out the peach core to Chris, a green branch was already sprouting out of it. "Here is something for your studies." The core would sprout a tiny peach tree within the hour, and if planted would continue to grow at a normal pace. "Give my regards to your boss, it's admirable to be as determined as she is. Is it just the two of you working here?"

Caia needed to hide a laugh under their hand to stop themself from suggesting something to Yui that would fix her problem but they refrained. The odd glint in the elf's eye was not lost on Caia, but Yui was moving on to something else quite quickly.

"Ah... Yes," they nodded, sobering up immediately. "A war might be a bit far-fetched, don't you think? Why do you think the elves aren't ready?"

They were alone in this part of the museum, far from the festivities and music, but Yui still looked up and down the hall and listened for approaching steps. When she was certain they wouldn't be overheard she continued. "I have seen the signs of unrest and enmity between the species. It appears to be enhanced by the fear of the human Artemis, and instead of uniting us I fear it will turn supernaturals against each other." She sighed, "But I hope you're right, that war is still far on the horizon and we might yet steer another course."

She wanted to trust Caia's judgement, they were older after all, but she was worried that Caia didn't have the same insight into the lives and minds of Vievecor's inhabitants. When she spoke it was with a troubled tone. "Elves are not a warrior people anymore. Adaire created a safe haven for us, not a fortress. But what is more than that, I wonder if the ruins we found under the park were a sign that our greatness is in the past, and we have already been defeated."

"I think you shine all on your own, Artus might pale in comparison," the elf answered with a cheeky smile. It was much easier to flirt when they knew they didn't have a chance. "You're right, that puppy dog look will begin to crumble the foundations of our elven society so we really can let him unleash that," Atlas agreed. It was just a little bit of fun, Artus could survive one song at least.

"I'd be honoured." Yui was no stranger to the dancefloor but this was Atlas's speciality and maybe just the one art form where they could outshine their brother. Atlas took her hands just as the music started. They fell into the masculine role easily enough, guiding their steps and turns with practised ease. "That's the big question. I was hoping I'd find Caia but I doubt they'd be here to dance. Maybe I can get a dance with all the deity's. What about you? Anyone you want to steal a dance with?"

Yui let out a melodious laugh at Atlas' compliment. "A star doesn't shine alone in the night sky," she said and squeezed Atlas' hand. "And here on the dance floor, you'll help us both shine."

Two by two, moving easily through the most complicated steps and spins, they eased over the dance floor. Yui found herself enjoying the feeling of being absorbed by the rhythm, the beautiful dresses that melted together with the decorations. "Caia will tell you that dancing is for the young," Yui joked just as they finished another combination of steps down the length of the dance floor. "Why don't you go for someone less dusty?" she teased, "A deity is a good choice, they can start levitating towards the end of the dance." She considered the question for herself, "There are few dance partners here that are interesting yet not dangerous. I might give the stray humans a wild night... They'll be forced to forget it, but tomorrow their feet will be aching from all the dancing."

"Oh?" Caia responded, brows raising as they looked Yui over before the expression on their face turned into one of amusement. "Fighting over you? Now why would that be cause for getting you out of the city?" they asked, noting how the way Yui carried herself seemed to bely something else.

"I'd have thought it'd be an honour having Atlas and Artus fighting over you."

"If they are fighting, that means there needs to be a winner," Yui said thoughtfully, "And I would rather have them both get along." She giggled and waved her fan as if trying to blow away the silliness. It wasn't why she had come to look for Caia, but it was nice to have someone to gossip with. "I like them both too much to have to break a heart. But I think it might not be necessary," she added and glanced at Caia with a mysterious glint in her eyes.

"Now, I do wish to speak with you on a more serious matter," she said and sighed, the hints of joy being replaced by worry. "I fear that there is war brewing, and I worry that the elves are not ready."

He watched her closely, curious of what she could possibly be thinking. Some of those thoughts flickered across her expression but he hadn't yet learned to read her face, though it was something he hoped to do, with time. She had always been that way, keeping her truest thoughts to herself and only bringing the surface level to light with her words. Artus's methods of acting, delving into a character's feelings and motivations, made his desire to understand her that much stronger.

"I can only hope, though I know she'll hold it against me for many centuries to come." That was their privilege as his beloved sibling, after all. The lighthearted way he was taking this conversation shifted with Yui's question. It felt far too important for him to be anything other than serious. "From my few interactions with her, I found her beautiful and interesting. But I've also hardly spoken to her, and I've never had plans to be with someone long term that wasn't an elf. In alternate worlds where that is not a concern, perhaps... but not in this life."

Yui held her breath as her question left her lips. The short silence before Artus answered dragged on strangely slow for an elf of her age. When his answer came, it was soothing only to the extent of Yui's first worry. So, he didn't see himself spending his life with a vampire, that was almost to be expected. What she had hoped for was closer to a serenade, never-ending poetry of their future lives together, a promise of ever-lasting love -- unrealistic and silly, of course, and she knew that. There was still turmoil in Yui's heart, and she needed reassurance. She realized that she couldn't expect a wave of emotions from Artus if she didn't show some herself. So she left her spot at the window and stepped over to Artus.

"Then, my next question concerns this life..." she'd had her gaze pointed down on her hands, but now she raised it and looked into Artus' kind, warm soul. "If I said I chose you in that world, I choose you in this one, and if there is a next life I will follow you there... what would you say?" She allowed herself a nervous little smile, wondering what in the name of all the ages had happened to her bravery.

Caia was minding their own business lurking in the deeper recesses of Winterlight Manor, preferring not to be noticed as they looked around the place the deities had prepared for the Christmas party this year. Avoiding stepping under the mischievous mistletoe was also paramount because they had seen the chaos it was causing throughout the night.

They were leaned against a wall along one of the manor hallways just outside of the area of effectiveness of a bunch of mistletoe on the ceiling when they spotted Yui rounding the corner.

"I'd be careful where you walk, Yui," Caia said and gestured to the mistletoe the elf almost passed under. "And Merry Christmas, I suppose."

Yui had snuck away from the ballroom, leaving the Westwood siblings behind. There was someone she else had hoped to talk to, and as it happened she ran into them after moving further into the magical manor. She stopped immediately at Caia's warning and eyed the room for traps. The mistletoe in the ceiling up ahead felt suspiciously not like a normal mistletoe. "Enchanted?" Yui asked and stepped in a wide circle around the plant to get to Caia.

"Merry Christmas, Caia," she beamed at the other elf when she reached their side. "I was hoping I would find you," she said, whipping out her decorated hand fan and fanning herself with it. "You have to help me get out of the city, the Westwood siblings are fighting over me." Her voice was theatrically tired, but behind the fan she hid a little smile.

Atlas had their eyes on the pair since the moment they entered. It wasn't really Christmas without some family drama and with both of their parents still holidaying somewhere, it was up to Atlas to cause the drama. She had no intention of ruining Christmas but they couldn't help but tease her brother just a little bit. When Yui's hand went out to Artus, they swooped right in, taking her hand before her brother could.

"Well I would be honored to have this dance," she agreed, their grin spreading from ear to ear. The surprise didn't look like disappointment so she was happy to steal this first dance. "See you soon, brother," she called over her shoulder as they took the lead to the dancefloor. Yui didn't seem to mind her prank too much so she'd take the dance before it was interrupted by Artus in a few minutes. "It's merely a test, we need to find out how long it will take to interrupt us. I think his chivarly will kick in after one and a half dances. What do you think?"

"The honour is all mine. I think we deserve a little time to shine on our own, don't you think?" Yui beamed back at Atlas, taking hold of her hand. "He might be testing us just as much. I don't think Artus has it in him to interrupt the dance, but his face will begin to resemble a puppy's the longer we leave him alone." She felt only a little guilty when looking back at Artus, but she quickly turned her eyes to Atlas and didn't look back. It was time to have a bit of fun.

Their dresses moved about them like tiny magical waterfalls as they stepped out on the dance floor. Yui hoped that they were making all dancers in the proximity jealous of their grace and movement. "Show me your moves," Yui winked at Atlas just as the music started. She held out one hand to Atlas, in the other she held her fan, and then they began their dance. "Who else are you planning to steal a dance from?" she asked between turns.

A Christmas Night | Yui & Artus

It was a shame that the mistletoe had been cursed, Yui had planned on making up for the missed dance with Artus by pulling him in under one of them. After seeing all the dramatic interactions caused by the magic she decided against it. Instead she picked up some fruit cake in the dining room before finding her way back to Artus.

The elf gave him a guilty smile, biting her lower lip, and held out the fruit cake on a napkin. "Please accept this as an apology for leaving you alone on our first dance. I would blame Atlas, but I can't deny my own involvement," she commented cheekily. "Do you want to give it another try? I promise I won't run away this time. Or would you rather try your luck under the mistletoe?" she giggled and added in a whisper, "I've heard that it's enchanted."

Yui opens the gift and giggles a little. Although she's never had trouble chasing off irritating men, she will definitely try this little weapon on someone. The bracelet she puts on her hand, and puts the other gifts into a safe place. "Thank you, my secret little giver."

The first dance | Atlas & Yui

The orchestra signaled that the next dance was about to start. Yui looked around for Artus and waved at him to join her. It was time for the minuet, and they had promised their first dances to each other. They had started seeing each other now, and Yui was happy for his courtship. Perhaps it was the piece she had been missing in her life, because it felt like Artus filled her heart and calmed the warrior in her.

She extended her hand towards him, but just then it was grabbed by someone else and she felt herself be swiftly led towards the dance floor. Yui's surprised eyes turned to see Atlas by her side and her face cracked up with fond amusement. In Atlas she found a kindred spirit, a restless soul that wished to experience life to its fullest. She could feel herself being pulled along in this prank not just physically but in spirit. "Oh Atlas, are you stealing me away from your poor brother? You know he's too kind to refuse you."

He was just lucky Atlas and Yui hadn't teamed up to point out all of his mistakes, though he was well aware that neither would let him live it down. A lot of things had happened during that event but it was another life and he would take the roasting in fun. Nothing he did was intentional to hurt those in his life. Still, he knew not everyone felt the same, which was why he was willing to be patient.

For a brief moment, it appeared as if she lost herself to thought, though she was soon returning back to the moment, her eyes returning to his. "I think I'm fairing better than most. I've spent enough time acting to separate myself from that alternate version of myself." Her question was not unsurprising, nor unexpected. "No, I haven't. I don't normally cross paths with her often, and I have a feeling a century without seeing my face won't be long enough." It was curious to him, though, that the elf couldn't even say Vivian's name. What thoughts were going through her mind?

It was sweet of Artus to try and distance himself from the person he had been in Phantom Creak, to bring her flowers and put up with Atlas's reprimands. He was always sweet, Yui thought, and selfless. Yet he would stand up for his beliefs and his people if someone confronted him. There really wasn't a single bad quality about him that Yui could see, and that feeling was both exhilarating and terrifying. Would she dare to commit herself fully to loving Artus with the risk of doing that with a clouded judgement? In Phantom Creak she had given all of herself but only receiving part of him, she didn't think she would be able to live like that in reality. She felt her cheeks blossom at the thoughts and she turned around to hide her emotions by face the window.

"It is hard to be angry with you for long. I am sure she has already forgiven you," she said without irony, but still avoiding to look at Artus. His words had offered a reassurance she hadn't known she needed, calming the fear that held its long fingers wrapped around her heart. Yui clasped her hands together and asked with a voice as calm an even as possible, despite each spoken word causing her pain. "You chose her for wife in that life. Does she have your heart in this life as well?"

"You could call it an experiment. And yeah, I'll start by reaching out to the witches I know and I'll explain everything before they decide if they want to participate and they could stop the experiment at any time." He furrowed his brow when she talked about asking the species elders. "Magic is a part of the world, same as any other 'power.' We all have nervous systems that run on electricity, but I don't need permission to study that."

He took a breath to gather his thoughts, and sat back in his chair. "The role of science is to help us understand the world and how it works. And with that definition, if we can study something, we should - the best we can without causing harm. One place to start with that is looking at exactly what happens as a result of magic and seeing where that leads."

It was strange for the elf to speak to someone so clearly a child of his time. The vampire was young, Yui would guess he wasn't far from his human age, and if not then at least his naivety, curiosity, and idea of the world being his to explore made him appear very young. She tried to stay open-minded during their conversation, but when Chris said that he didn't need permission to study the nervous system Yui's eyebrows shot up. "Is that so?" she asked politely, smoothening out her expression.

It appeared that her words had sparked something in the vampire, because he spoke with commendable passion. She hoped she had not upset him. Yui had finished her peach and rolled the core between her hands when she said softly smiling, "I am not here to argue. The world of science is an open-minded place, and one that I'm not so familiar with. It is not my aim to critique, only to offer a warning that the community of science is young compared to the community of the supernatural. Not everyone here shares your ideals."
