GDP와 생활수준이 극적으로 올라가는 동안 자살률도 치솟고 행복도도 뒤쳐진다.

이는 가장 널리 통용되는 역사 법칙의 어두운 한 단면을 보여준다. 인간은 권력을 획득하는 데는 매우 능하지만 권력을 행복으로 전환하는 데는 그리 능하지 못하다.

한국이 가르쳐주는 또 한 가지 -

기술은 이야기의 절반에 불과하고, 마침내 사람들이 기술로 무엇을 할 것인지에 따라 모든 것이 결정된다.

남북한은 동일한 언어, 역사, 전통을 지닌 동일한 민족의 사람들이 거의 비슷한 기술을 사용해서 완전히 다른 사회를 건설했다.

- 인간은 최근까지도 사바나의 패배자로 지냈기 때문에, 자신의 지위에 대한 공포와 걱정으로 가득 차 있고 그 때문에 두 배로 잔인하고 위험해졌다. 치명적인 전쟁에서 생태계 파괴에 이르기까지 역사적 참사 중 많은 수가 이처럼 너무 빠른 도약에서 유래됐다.
