Sin of Sleeping Snow Butai Log 11 June 2016 - Tokyo Zepp Blue Theatre Roppongi

Guest : Kitamura Ryo

The stage touches the happenings leading up to the Battle of Nagashino in 1575, focusing mainly on Yamagata Masakage and Takeda Katsuyori and also the other players Tokugawa Ieyasu and Oda Nobunaga with a somewhat supernatural thread through it with the omnipresence of a goddess (?).

Attended the evening show and was almost late to it ! The theater staff were already hollering "please hurry" to everyone coming through the theater gates (the uphill battle wasn't fun when you're rushing XD;). There was someone in the same 'batch' of walkers hurrying towards the main entrance and bumped into me at the door while walking past who looked suspiciously like Torigoe...

Zepp Blue is a pretty big hall and it was probably 95% full; quite hard to say as my seat was near the front and I could hardly make out the back rows. The proportion of male attendees were high and there were quite a fair bit of the older generation in the crowd as well which is a contrast to the 2.5D adaptations. Foyer had tables on two sides of the wall for merchandise and a section for cast gifts. The show ran for approximately 3 hours and 15 mins with a 15 minute intermission.

The stage was a simple setup, with bare stairs and platform, some sliding screens that were very effective in becoming moving backdrops, castle walls, sliding doors etc. White (fake) pine trees complete the rest of the background. There were a few uses of stage smoke to introduce cast or to facilitate scene changes.  

Cast Thoughts Suzuki Hiroki - Good expressions, nice movements and decent fighting albeit on the soft side. Has good chemistry with Anzai. Slightly hoping that he was a bit taller/less slender as sometimes he gets "overshadowed" by the rest of the cast even with those fancy shoulderpads. Anzai Shintaro - Confident as a Takeda and comedic at some parts in his interaction with Suzuki which was really good to watch. Has a nice stage presence and stance and sometimes almost overshadows the cast leader, Suzuki. Niigaki Risa - Was (surprisingly) good in this. Comes off enthusiastic and has a lot of pretty tiring fighting scenes. Ishikawa Chiaki - Didn't have much action but was just prancing around in the scenes, however the voice and singing is great. Feels really different listening to it live vs on the recorded genepro.

Highlights - Slow motion and time stop / time lag fighting sequences - Anzai's soliloquies are absolutely hilarious - Pop culture references during the gag bits (eg Giants baseball and Sazae-san) - Hiroki's cheekbones are really obvious XD;;; - Snowflakes ! - A wild Ranmaru appears ! - Nice spear fighting choreography - Suzuki's call and answer part with the goddess that included a recorded playback of some of his serifu. - A soldier falling off the higher platform after being stabbed (ouch) - The actors running down the middle walkway and from the side doors. Anzai was on my side and he has a pretty strong presence! - Suzuki's "wakaran" in his conversation with the goddess - Anzai's begging for forgiveness in a very wrenching "moushiwake gozaimasen" in the scene with his mother - Takeda Shingen and Uesugi Kenshin tossing sake cups - The Yuki song is beautifully haunting and accompanied by falling snow when its sung - The final phrase "natsu ga kuru zo" - The shattering of the 'plaque' as the play reaches its final moments

Guest Bits A wild Kitamura appears ! In three scenes. Taking on the role as a hyperactive cocker spaniel Sanada Yukimura who is an overly enthusiatic puppy samurai and gets mercilessly bullied by the rest of the cast.

In one of the scenes, he was captured by the Oda/Tokugawa troops and pushed to the ground awaiting sentencing and was asked "So we heard you are releasing a CD?" to which Kitamura replied with the release dates and album title while still being squashed on the floor XD 

They then told him to sing it as the punishment so he stood up, used on of the spears(?) as the microphone and said he will start singing from the chorus. Kitamura then struck the pose (same as the dance move in Kibou no Hikari PV) and only managed "ashita wo tsuku..." before someone else appeared and asked him to stop singing. Some protesting/grumbling ensued before Suzuki stalked in, grabbed Kitamura by the hand and led him off stage while mumbling things about debut XD; The audience were laughing really hard.

Curtain Call The curtain call was quite short, two rounds and no standing ovation. Suzuki spent the first one apologising to the person he banged into when he tripped during his run down the middle walkway (sasuga Hiroki xD). Second time around he invited the guest for the day Kitamura out to give a speech which included, "Have to be careful about appearing as a guest on Disgoonie plays as it is really dangerous..." XD;;;

It was a little past 10pm when exiting the theater, there was a healthy queue for last minute merchandise purchase and a large crowd heading out towards the two train stations on either side of Zepp. As one rounds the theater carpark, the Tokyo Tower comes clearly into view, shinning brightly in the night.

Donten ni Warau Stage Log [butai]

Donten ni Warau Stage Log 05 June 2016 - Tokyo Senshuuraku Tennoz Galaxy Theatre

This stage covers pretty much the same areas as the first stage albeit with some cast replacements. Some parts were also slightly changed in terms of props, costumes and actions. The story covers the arcs from 12 episodes of the anime. The show started at 1pm and ran for 90 minutes with 15 minutes intermission and the second half ran for 75 minutes.  

The final day of the Tokyo show was a grey rainy day (sandwiched between a few days of sunshine and hot weather) so it was quite befitting. It was an almost full theater, with just a few empty seats and a few rows cordoned off for the recording. The foyer had booths for pre-order and sale of DVDs, stage goods, gifts for cast members and a mini shrine where you can purchase an ema (絵馬 / small wooden plaques) to write wishes on and hang up. Next to it was a display of ema written by the cast but no pictures were allowed. 

Quick thoughts on some of the cast Kumou Tenka (Tamaki Yuki) - He’s gotten more natural in the role of Tenka especially in the laughing bits and movements have improved as well. Some of his glances were pretty lethal and the switch between protector Tenka and the baka-aniki Tenka was nice to watch. The groaning bit at the dungeon was pretty painful to listen to and extended from the first production. His poses in that scene was changed as well.

Kumou Soramaru (Ueda Keisuke) - Recasted from Gaku Sano in the 2015 production. While I think visually Gaku is closer to Soramaru's original character design, Ueda comes across as a livelier Soramaru (with some pretty nice biceps...) His parring and fighting movements were also more precise and feisty.

Kumou Chuutarou (Saku Momose) - Quite a joy to watch as Chuutarou in the second production, he's gotten more natural in the role as well. The chemistry between the 3 brothers also feels much better. Has a way of slightly bending at the knees (or was it the pants design?) that makes him appear a little younger and more in character.

Kinjou Shirasu (Matsuda Ryo) - Recasted from Hirama Soichi. Visually and acting wise I think Matsuda makes a better Shirasu ^^; The chemistry with Tenka also feels better. Some nice shinobi poses and stances (including one flipping sequence) throughout the production.

Highlights - Sliding stage screens that doubles as 'picture screens'. - The 'frontdrop' piece that is often opaque for visual display but occasionally transparent in certain areas especially in the scene with Orochimaru’s killing.  - Manzai pair's spotlight scene - Ueda's biceps lol - Straight-backed Fujiki-san has a nice stage presence especially when sitting and addressing the Yamainu. - The play of the background sounds especially the crickets which increases to a deafening volume during some parts and the soothing acoustic melody after. - Chuutarou's running brakes in the second half where he was trying to run off but got told to stay. - The ensemble as prisoners and guards were good in getting the mood of Gokumonjou with their body language. - Abe no Sousei (Hosogai Kei) grabbing hold of Tenka as he was about to collapse after fighting and saying "Its too early for you to fall."

Curtain Call There were 3 rounds of curtain calls plus the last one which was to a standing ovation. Tamaki got the butai newcomer Aoyama Makoto (who plays Takeda Rakuchou) to talk during the first curtain call and Aoyama was quite nervous and stumbled through his speech which was really endearing XD;.

When it got to the three brothers to speak, all three were trying to pass the responsibility (and blame) to the others with Saku trying to get the other two to talk instead and Ueda saying stuff like all the other good stuff will be said by aniki.

Throughout all the “Makoto ni arigatou gozaimashita~!” with deep bows, Ueda doesn’t dip quite fully as the others and you can see him sticking out on the line of bowed backs. Only after the second bow I noticed that was because the two swords that were tucked at his waist were poking him in the chest and making him unable to fully bend 180 °  XDDD;;; Oh, Uechan ^^;;;

At the standing ovation, Tamaki was the only one who talked and it was pretty hilarious XD His verbatim speech (translated + as much as I can remember) below :-

"Usually, we will tell everyone thank you and please sit down when we receive a standing ovation, but because you all have been sitting for so long this time it's okay to stand.” Lots of laughter all around and everyone remained standing. It was a nice feeling!

“Though today is the final show for Tokyo and we are going to Osaka next, we normally have each of the cast members say something but the staff just told us that the truck is coming (for the props and set) so we need to hurry up and pack."

Was slightly disappointed that there was no all cast comments since its senshuuraku but can’t be helped! Then Tamaki decided to add something.

"Since this morning it was cloudy and rainy, but after this when you go out from here, it will definitely be sunny!" Tamaki paused and was about to do the final thank you when a cheeky comment from Ueda off-mic to which Tamaki continued with, "If it isn't sunny out there, then it is all Hosogai's fault!" Cue a confused, flustered and protesting Hosogai who was quietly minding his own business between Saku and Matsuda.

It was close to 4:30pm by the time everyone started streaming out the theater and spilling out onto the roads of Tennoz Isle.

True enough, the sun was shinning and the skies were blue.

Deeply mesmerizing, the clear, crisp tones of of Tachibana-san shifts to Taniyama-san's skilful control and vibrato then moves to Morikubo-san's smokey and husky voice before melding into a chorus. It was tough to translate this song and I don't think I did it enough justice.. ^^; Anyway, it is the season of sakura so, happy spring =D [1] 戦火 is sung as ikusa hi instead of the usual senka. [2] 刻/toki/koku is the archaic form of 時/toki.     [3] 宿命/shukumei sung as 定め/sadame. [4] 一片/ippen sung as 一枚/hitohira. [5] 現世/gensei/present life sung as 今/ima/now. [6] Hard to put this in translation. Carries the feeling of as long as get to know better than not. [7] Another tough one translate - not entirely sure I captured it right >_< [8] There are a few ways to intepret this and I just went with one of them ^^;;

For sake of uniformity I'm using "myself" throughout the translation but can be taken as yourself as well. [1] 仮想世界/kasou sekai means virtual world but sung as masquerade. [2] 言葉/kotoba/words sung as naifu/knife. [3] This sentence could be interpreted/translated in a few ways; I went with the direct-est one to leave it open for intepretation. I tried as much as possible to stick to the style and syntax used by Hino-san in the lyrics, however that resulted in some parts sounding rather odd/cut-off in English ^^; A great 8th album by er0 with all well-rounded songs! [1] The kanji used is 音楽/ongaku/music but sung as kotoba/words. [2] Suki/like/love can be used to convery the meaning of "I like you/I love you" without the pronouns. [3] Akane-iro/madder red is a colour used mostly to describe the sun and sunset. [4] Kanji used is 現在/genzai but sung as 今/ima. [5] Implying a better person/more understanding/tolerant. I might have translated it wrongly/implied the wrong meaning though ^^;

The future that was at a distance Pull it back with these hands now THE PLACE WHERE WE REALLY SHINE ☆ ★ ☆ ★ ☆ ★ ☆ ★ ☆ ★ ☆ ★ ☆ ★ ☆ Translation Notes : The first Oldcodex song I listened to =D I really like the imagery conjured by the melody right from the opening bars (good job Tatsun-san!) while I try not to envision poking Yorke with one of the horns for the somewhat disjointed lyrics that were a pain ^^;; Also, growly "where" sound really good when Tatsun isn't speed-eating the syallables XD~ [1] Or tinged with heat/zeal/rage XD; [2] 姿/sugata can mean form/shape/condition etc.
