Summer’s Scents.

Summer is a time to escape from the serious slightly heavy scents of the year, and try something a little more light-hearted. Go out on a limb and sniff notes that you usually would shy away from – coconut, peaches, and apples all make appearances in summer scents. And if you’re not into a perfume to wear all day, know that many summer scents come in body lotions, body washes, and scrubs too, so that could be where you get your dose of summer. In 1921, Coco Chanel wanted “a woman’s fragrance that smells like woman.” When perfume designer Ernest Beaux presented her with his fifth composition, the choice seemed simple and obvious: her perfume would be called N°5. It is an aldehydic floral, a bouquet of abstract flowers with an indefinable femininity. N°5 starts with notes of ylang-ylang and neroli, then unfolds with Grasse jasmine and May rose. Sandalwood and vanilla round out the composition with unforgettable woody notes. The first Chanel N°5 perfume was captured in a simple rectangular bottle with the top which resembled Place Vendome in Paris. World’s oldest perfumes discovered.

The world’s oldest known perfumes have been found on the Mediterranean island of Cyprus in 2003 by a team of archaeologists. The perfumes date back more than 4,000 years. Remnants of the perfumes were found inside an ancient 3,230-square-foot (300-square-meter) factory that was part of a larger industrial complex at Pyrgos.

The buildings were destroyed during an earthquake in 1850 B.C., but perfume bottles, mixing jugs, and stills were preserved under the collapsed walls. The artifacts are currently on display at the Capitolini Museum in Rome, along with modern reproductions of the centuries-old scents.

“It’s a rare chance to smell the scent of ancient history — typically a mix of natural spices and olive oil — thanks to an exhibit in Rome featuring fragrances from the world’s oldest known perfume factory.

Clay jugs used to make and store ancient perfumes lie at an excavation site on the Mediterranean island of Cyprus. The 4,000-year-old fragrances—the world’s oldest known perfumes—were re-created by an experimental archaeology center and are now on display at an Italian museum. The buildings also housed an olive press, a winery and a copper smelting works. The scale of the site, and the presence of huge 500-litre oil-storage jars, suggests it was once the centre of a prosperous export business.

Belgiorn and a team of scientists analyzed the remants found in the mixing jugs and clay perfume bottles, and were able to identify extracts of laurel, cinnamon and myrtle, among other ingredients. They also discovered a number of fragrance recipes that had been created with the ingredients. Plants and herbs were ground up and mixed with olive oil in clay jugs, then distilled in a clay apparatus, Belgiorno explained.

The smell of the perfumes is “a nice experience that re-creates in our mind a sort of ancestral reminder,” Belgiorn said in an email interview.

The archaeologist added that she doesn’t know why the people of Cyprus started making and wearing perfumes 4,000 years ago. In ancient Egypt, perfumes were used for cosmetic and pharmaceutical purposes as well as religious ceremonies.

The luxury fashion brand Dolce & Gabbana (D&G) sell a perfume for babies.

Last year, Italian luxury fashion house Dolce & Gabbanna launched its first ever collection for kids, which they said to be a miniature version of their signature line. The luxury brand has revealed

its plans to roll out a kids’ luxury fragrance that has been inspired by one of best smells in the world – the baby smell.

The new fragrance will be in 50-ml bottles and will have a price tag of $45.

Mash them a lot; having a mortar and pestle will make this easy.

Return the mashed rose petals in the water and strain out any moisture. Keep repeating this step until it is brownish-red.

Take the rose petals out and drain the liquid into a jar this is your rose water! Store in a cool place and give your skin a spritz whenever you need a sweet and refreshing little pick me up!

Prepare your blossoms. If you grow your own flowers, you already have a source for making your own natural perfume. If not, you can buy the flower petals of your choice at your local florist or even ask a neighbor if you can borrow some of their unused petals.

Here’s how to make perfume from flowers.

Line the bowl with cheesecloth, allowing for the edges to hang over a bit.

Place the flowers in the bowl.

Cover with water.

Let sit overnight and through the next day-at least 24 hours.

Using the edges of the cheesecloth, pull the flowers out of the bowl.

Pour the water into a pot, and squeeze the excess scented water out of the cheesecloth-bundled flowers.

Turn on the heat, and allow the water to simmer down to about a teaspoon.

Pour your perfume into a small bottle.

Making perfume from flowers is so easy and inexpensive that you’ll never go back to the chemical laden perfumes that abound at your local department and drugstores. Keep in mind that homemade perfume without preservatives will have a shorter shelf life. Homemade, all natural perfume in a decorative bottle also makes a thoughtful gift for almost any occasion. You think solid fragrance is a complex product, but it is easy to do, but also because it’s effortlessly portable. How to make solid fragrance is simpler than lip balm, or any skincare products.The only problem is how to make a your signature scent. The beeswax makes it last a long, long time, and there’s just something so magically vintage about it.

Here’s what you need: Beeswax. Carrier oil (like jojoba, sweet almond, olive, or grapeseed) Essential oils of your choice. A container suitable for solid perfume (like an old lip balm container – even if it’s the “stick” variety!)

The rule of thumb is equal parts beeswax and carrier oil. I found that t

he typical lip balm container used about 2 tsp grated beeswax and 2 tsp carrier oil. With that in mind, as you blend your scents, use about 40-45 drops of essential oil per 4 tsp solid perfume base.

Step 1: Blend Your Essential Oil

While you can blend as you make the solid perfume, it might be better to blend ahead of time.

In a very small container, measure out your essential oil blend and make sure you like the way it smells while it’s concentrated.

Step 2: Melt the beeswax and oil

In a small double boiler (or makeshift double boiler), start the water heating on the bottom pot and drop your measured beeswax into the clean top pot.

When your beeswax is pretty much melted, add in the carrier oil and stir until everything is warm and liquid.

Step 3: Remove From Heat and Quickly Stir In Your Essential Oil(s) You want to move fast here because this sets up and hardens like lightning. If, for some reason, this hardens before your able to get it into your container, don’t panic.Just put the bowl back on top of your double boiler and let it remelt.(Just don’t leave it over the heat for too long, because you risk losing some essential oils to evaporation.)

Step 4: Pour Into Your Container and Watch It Harden.

Carefully pour your homemade perfume mixture into your chosen container.

Within minutes, your perfume will set, and by about 10 minutes, it will be completely hardened, done, and ready for you to enjoy (or give as a gift).
