Glovelet I freehand knit a while ago and never shared
I’ve gotten a number of questions across platforms regarding this piece including someone who emailed me about it so I thought I’d put a comprehensive response here
Q: Is there a pattern?
A: No, this was freehanded, I made it up as I went, but this is what it looks like when laid flat, it is more or less a rectangle that was knit side to side. I knit it to fit my arm and tried it on as I went, if you want to make something similar, you will have to fit it to your own measurements
Q: Can I crochet this?
A: Not really, most of it was knit, and you will not get the same effect by crocheting it. The border area for the lacing and thumb loop was crocheted with a very small hook however, but the majority of this was knit
Q: What size needles and yarn did you use?
A: I cannot remember what size needles I used, and may have actually used multiple sizes. The yarn is size 10 mercerized crochet cotton, the same kind commonly used for doilies
Q: How did you get the big holes?
A: Loose tension, big needles, small yarn. The very large holes were created by rows of yo k2tog, which I alternated with regular rows
Q: How is it fastened?
A: Like this, the attached “tail” is used to lace it up. Most of the tail is actually machine knit rows of stockingnette, with a few hand knit rows of garter at the beginning to give it some grip
Any other questions I’d be happy to answer
Another two goth DIYs since people liked the last one. I can’t remember if I’ve shared these here or not. You need to be able to have a vision at a thrift store and I hope this will help you develop an eye for possibilities.
First photo: Loose linen top I thrifted, removed embellishments from, and dyed black. Loose linen clothing is excellent for hot weather, and I often will buy linen clothing when thrifting regardless of color, because it can always be dyed. I’ve dyed many linen pieces black now and have found that fiber reactive dyes yield more consistent results for black than standard off the shelf dye like RIT do. I’m also wearing some scraps of lace tied around my wrist in that photo, as a way to create something bold and black around my wrist without the heaviness of leather
Second photo: t-shirt dress thing I thrifted, dyed black, cut the neckline out of, and created a net piece for the shoulder by knotting thread together. I ended up cutting the neckline too big and the net piece helps keep it on my shoulder. A lot of people asked how I made that part, and its just string knotted together in a series of overhand knots and then sewn onto the fabric
When I say you need to use your imagination to be goth… this is what I mean.
This dress was originally tie-dye with these cheap plastic beads on the straps and lower fringe. That was nothing I couldn’t fix with wire cutters and a dye bath. I thrifted it because it was a lightweight rayon (good for summer) and I liked the asymmetrical fringed hem. I’ve been looking at a lot of scans of 80s BOY London catalogs and have felt inspired by the deconstructed and asymmetrical silhouettes I saw in them.

I need to DIY some more stuff
I have this dress that fits me like perfectly but I just don't wear cream/white. I gotta get around to dying it black sometime, I would probably actually wear it then. Dresses fitting my bust correctly is so rare, and even more rare when it also fits the rest of my body too. Will be such a good going out dress once it's black
