So many Reddit relationship stories (where the relationship is not inherently fucked and the other person is not a threat to society) just come down to the person not realizing their feelings aren’t valid. Sometimes you think and feel things that are damaging to yourself and others and you have to learn to mitigate those bigggggg feelings. It is shit I thought we learned in kindergarten. Everybody is a little jealous of the birthday boy’s cool gifts but if you have a sobbing screaming jealous breakdown about it at the party, nobody is going to want to be your friend and it is not going to change anything in your favor.
There will be posts like “I feel angry at my wife because she hasn’t been as affectionate towards me because she’s been taking care of her dying mom.” like, okay. Grow the fuck up. That’s an inside thought. It’s normal to miss your S/O when stressful life events keep you from spending quality time with each other. Absolutely not normal to behave like your point of view is the most important part of this situation and to continue to develop resentment towards your spouse who is experiencing one of the worst things that can happen to a person.
Sometimes something someone does makes you uncomfortable and you realize it is your fault for feeling that way. Sometimes you will be jealous for no particular reason. Sometimes you’ll have an immature and selfish point of view on a situation. Sometimes you genuinely have to admit to yourself your feelings do not matter in a particular situation and swallow them.
Going to the other realm.
scrolling twitter today and then coming over here is like walking out of a burning building and then walking into the calm remains of a building that burnt down 5 years ago and has been reclaimed by nature.
As fun as it is to make fun of returning tumblr users, I’m actually surprised to see quite a lot artists coming back to test the waters and post their art on here again eventhough they’ve lost all momentum on here and/or naturally lost most of their followers because of the drought of activity.
If you see an artist you haven’t seen post in awhile and they post their new art on here. Please give them a reblog and not just a like for their work.
genuine tip for any tumblr newcomers: block literally whoever you want for any reason. even if you've never talked to them. they don't even need to be "problematic" or whatever. that person posting the worst takes imaginable in your favorite show's tag? block em. that person who runs a blog dedicated to a ship that makes you want to gouge your eyes out? block em. that person you've never interacted with directly but they left a comment on a post you saw and they just seem like a dick? block em.
the block button: it's free, it's easy, it's the key to a peaceful tumblrina life

Commenting fanfiction is the easiest thing in the world once you start doing it.
I leave a comment on every single fic I read. Sometimes when I read published books I go and leave a comment somewhere the author can find it. Granted, I literally majored in ‘leaving comments on fics’ (English Education), but once you start doing it it just becomes second nature. Now you’re gonna go to the Ozymandias school of leaving comments:
Problem: I can’t leave kudos again.
Beginner: This is a second/third/fourth Kudos
Advanced: This is my second/third/fortieth time reading this, I still love it so much. Here are a few new things I noticed. I like the way you personally do x, y, z compared to other authors I’ve read (in this ship/genre/fandom).
Problem: I don’t know what to say :(
Beginner: Just list what you did to read this fic. “I stayed up late reading this”, “I read this on a crowded train”, “this kept me company while sick”.
Advanced: X,Y,Z parts made me get butterflies, and I had a physical reaction to this part of the story, I squealed outloud when characters did x,y,z. I blushed at this part. I laughed out loud here. Whatever.
Problem: I’m embarrassed to leave a comment (what if I annoy the author?)
Beginner: Short answer: you won’t EVER annoy the author (unless you’re needlessly mean) But to start, be generic, you don’t have to spill your soul in the comments section. “I liked this” “I enjoyed reading this” “nice fic”.
Advanced: This really meant a lot to me that you wrote this. This is something I feel like I’ve always wanted to read. This fic hit me in all the right places. Etc.
Problem: I don’t know how to express myself/my experience
Beginner: My beginners go to is to highlight a line, put that in your comment and say “i liked this” or to identify basic emotions you had while reading and comment those “this made me happy” “this part made me sad” “i almost cried” “you made me laugh” Advanced: “Highlighted line” This line made me smile because it has to do with character development/it’s really romantic/it’s so unique/it’s moving. Sometimes I don’t highlight a line at all, I just talk about the stuff I’ve noticed were unique to the fic. “I love the way you did this particular thing with this character”.
This? This is an amazing post. This is the Captain Awkward of commenting posts—it addresses all your fears directly and gives you actionable scripts for each one.
Hey! Some of this can apply to responding to works on writeblr, too! Wonderful advice for if you’re stuck on a comment but you really want to leave one (and you should, if you can!).
