  Following the noise, his pace began to speed up as his body continued to reform, legs solidifying. He detested the slug-like unshapely form he was often confined to, finding it to be a rather pleasant surprise that he was able to regenerate with more ease in this world.

  Now all that was left was to find a way out of these tunnels. Oh, they were far more preferable than the void of course, but still… the scientist could think of more pleasing sights. But first things first; he would have to find the source of the footsteps from earlier. If the life form would turn out to be intelligent, that would make his stay here so much more enjoyable.

  It didn’t take long for him to stumble over the presumed origin of the sound, either; turning around a corner, he could spy a pale creature sitting on the ground. Human from the looks of it - it was rare to find a realm where they didn’t crawl on the planet’s surface like a disease. Well, at the very least they were not boring. The smile on his lips spread.

    ❝It seems I am not the only one lost down here.❞

The boy jerked his head around in shock. There was someone in here with him.

It took no time at all for his eyes to catch the strikingly white face, hovering in the shadows. No... Not hovering. If he looked very closely, he could make out a slim silhouette behind it. 

The face's mouth was twisted into a crescent smile and cracks were spreading out in several areas. It had a mannequin-like quality. 

Takashi immediately thought of nitai-sama and shuddered a bit.

At least the figure was capable of speech, so unlike the puppets from the Doll Mansion, it wasn’t an evil entity that only knew how to lash out.

“Er... Are you lost? The exit is just over here.“ He pointed at the ridge he had fallen from.

He was relieved he hadn’t intruded into this guy’s den or something, some spirits could get pretty nasty over territory. Would be nice to not get cursed for the umpteenth time.

Takashi stood up and brushed off his clothes while carefully glancing at the figure. There was something odd about this youkai, but he couldn’t put a finger on what.

He had turned around and been about to return to his business, when the boy’s question made him pause. Glancing over his shoulder back at Natsume, Matoba’s expression had changed back to the business smile he usually carried on his face.

     ❝Perhaps. For now, I was merely called to investigate, though.❞

  Not a lie, at the very least. There had been suspected ayakashi activity in one of the local shrines, giving the monks enough trouble as though they decided to ask the Matoba family for help.

     ❝If you are worried, you are welcome to join me.❞

  The boy’s abilities would be helpful in this, even if Natsume might attempt to help the youkai in the end. And, depending on it, Matoba might even humor him for a while.

If they had to ask specifically the clan’s head himself, it must be quite a big deal. 

Wouldn’t Natori work just as fine? He didn’t know how work was divided among exorcists. He didn’t always see eye to eye with the actor, but he definitely preferred him to work in this area over Matoba.

Takashi frowned. He wanted to refuse, but he was bad at letting things go after hearing about them. It was a bad habit that he failed to break, no matter how often he, and Nyanko-sensei, tried to stop himself.

If he went home like this, he would probably lie awake and agonise over this until the early hours. What if somebody he knew was involved? What if the youkai wasn’t causing trouble on purpose. What if they were suffering? 

Matoba wouldn’t care. If the exorcist judged them to be trouble, he would kill them, If he saw use in them, he would catch them. 

Takashi didn’t want that to happen, not this close to home.

“I’ll come.“

   Awareness returned to him in the middle of what appeared to be a cavern of sorts, the scientist’s form solidifying as he slowly looked around. Not an unfamiliar experience by all means, but one that was uncommon. Most of his time was spent trapped in the void between realities, shifting in and out of consciousness.

   But, sometimes, he would find himself in one of the many worlds for just a while. More than not, those were quite interesting experiences. A welcome diversion from the agony that was timelessness. 

   Slowly, uncaring of the fact that his body was still partially broken, Gaster began to move forwards. Usually his time in such realms was limited, meaning he would have to use it wisely if he wanted his visit to be… educational. It had been faint, but there had been noise audible to the monster just when he came to consciousness. The tap-tapping of steps on brittle stone, echoing through the tunnel system he found himself in.

   Oh, he was eager to learn just what sort of creatures would be polluting this realm.

The high school boy covered his mouth and pressed his back against the stone. His lungs were burning but he needed to be quiet. The frantic voices of his pursuers were close by, searching for him.

Takashi pushed himself as far back as he could as he tried to avoid detection, when suddenly the solid ground ended.

“Aa-kh!”

His startled cry was cut short. The drop was only a little over a meter deep. Takashi lied on the hard floor for a few moments, letting his shock dissolve into relief. The cave was slightly damp and the chill felt pretty nice after running. He sat up and rubbed his head. Short fall or not, it still hurt.

It had seemed like a small crevice at first glance, but it was surprisingly spacious. He couldn’t hear the youkai anymore, it should be okay to rest here for a bit.

What was Nyanko-sensei doing? He was going to give him a piece of his mind later.

  The one visible eye flickered down to the boy’s arms where pale skin was marred with bruises and scrapes, before Matoba returned his gaze to Natsume’s face again. The polite smile on his face grew only the tiniest bit wider, a hint of amusement in the exorcist’s eye now.

     ❝Evidently so. You may find it unwise to reject help so severely. The Fujiwaras might easily get dragged into your circumstances. ❞

  There was no threat in the man’s voice - although he was fully aware that Takashi would most likely take them as one. But, threat or not, his words were very much a truth which the boy would eventually have to face.

    ❝When that happens, you might be grateful to know you have the support of the Matoba clan.❞

  A moment long, Matoba simply regarded the boy, giving his words time to sink in, before he gave another smile of his - ungenuine and business-like. Mere courtesy.

    ❝Well, I believe I’ve kept you for long enough. I did not only come here to you either, I’m afraid. Good luck with your errands, Natsume-kun.❞

What was he smirking about? His physical appearance? Takashi was used to being called frail and weak-looking, and he couldn’t defeat a giant youkai in a single blow like Matoba could, but he wasn’t defenceless!

“...!“

His peaceful world was always on the edge of a cliff. One wrong step and his life might end tomorrow. He knew that, he had always known. But... the more time he spent here, the more warmth and kindess he found, the more scared he became of it being taken from him.

What was he supposed to do if he came home one day to find the exorcist talking to his foster parents? What would happen then? He wouldn’t be able to stay here anymore.

“I will not let anything happen to them,” he whispered, facing away. 

Matoba was always smiling, but it felt thin, and right beneath the surface was that cold mercilessness. Would he throw Takashi’s life into disarray if he antagonised him too much?

Takashi paused.

“You aren’t here to hunt youkai, are you?“

As soon as the boy’s eyes met his own, Natsume’s expression hardened, posture turning defensive. His behaviour would never cease to amuse the exorcist, even though he sometimes wished that the other would allow himself to relax a little at least. If Natsume would choose to join the Matoba clan, it would only be beneficial to both sides.

    ❝I expected you to say that. A pity, really… The Matoba clan could use your talent, Natsume-kun.❞

  Despite the cold treatment from his junior, Seiji’s expression was as unreadable as ever, the smile on his face unwavering. He indeed had expected the boy to refuse his invitation again, but he wouldn’t let that deter him… Natsume was still young. Inexperienced. Eventually he would see the ayakashi for what they really were.

   ❝But I won’t draw my offer back just yet. You can’t live your life like this forever, can you? I can protect you when the time comes.❞

His frown deepened. Takashi was content where he was. In fact, he had never been happier since he moved in with the Fujiwara couple. The friends he had made during his stay in this small town were precious to him, both humans and ayakashi. Even if there were dangerous things lurking around every corner, he wouldn’t trade his current life for the world.

It was quite upsetting that Matoba didn’t respect his wishes. 

“I can take care of myself. And if I needed protection, I wouldn’t seek it from you.”

Takashi could admit that Matoba might not be an entirely bad person, clearly there was a lot he had to deal with, but his worldview was the complete opposite to him. The exorcist’s merciless methods had been shocking to witness. The way he used innocent youkai as bait, taking their blood, killing them... He had even harmed sensei. How could he ever expect Takashi to join his clan?

There were other people he could turn to for help. People he could trust, people who didn’t try to manipulate or use him.

“Is that all you wanted to say? I have some errands to run.“

"Have you thought about my offer some more?"

It felt like someone had replaced his insides with a block of ice. 

Why was he here? It was unlikely that the head of the Matoba-clan just happened to be in the area. 

He wished he had taken up Nishimura’s offer to go out for karaoke, Matoba wouldn’t have approached him if his classmates were there. ...Would he? 

Takashi cast a quick glance behind him, there was nobody around. Thankfully. He could not allow any of his friends getting involved.

"My answer isn’t going to change, Matoba-san," he tried to speak calmly, but it was difficult to hide the nervousness in his voice.

Why did he always have to catch the attention of shady characters? He would take dealing with a benevolent youkai over this man any day. They were less unpredictable.

Nishimura and Kitamoto are such best boys

That was a strange way of phrasing it, but Takashi couldn’t help but agree. Nishimura and Kitamoto didn’t avoid or shun him because of his odd behaviour and had offered him friendship without asking anything in return. 

They always looked out for him and considered his feelings. 

While he couldn’t tell them about the things he saw on an everyday basis like with Taki and Tanuma, he could still rely on them. They offered normalcy in his otherwise chaotic life.

“Yeah, they are very dear to me.”

what do you like to do for fun? like hobbies and stuff :D

Takashi wasn’t sure if he actually had a hobby. Not a proper one anyway. He never really had the leisure to find something like that. 

“Well, I like reading…” He wished he could give a more exciting answer, like playing a sport or something. Should he join the track club? He was quite fast, but he tired easily.

“I take a lot of walks with my cat, too. And recently a couple of friends showed me a great fishing spot.“ 

That’s a hobby, right?
