On July 13th 1977 lightning struck the New York power grid causing the city to go completely black for over 24 hours. During the blackout , many aspiring artist flooded electronic stores in hopes of looting an expensive turntable or mixer. Before the blackout there were very few hip hop groups in New York City but this phenomenon inspired the popularity of hip hop super groups for time to come. After the blackout everyone was a DJ.
