you believed that you and baran would be forever; she did too. you guys understood each other perfectly and truly felt like the other was a missing piece of your whole. the two year and a half was strong where you guys genuinely saw a future together and maybe even a wedding. but after that, things just began to go downhill at a scarily fast pace.
it started with her coming home late after work at the va, bringing work irritation home and taking it out on you. sheâd apologize because in her mind it would make things better. and for a while, it did. but if you keep breaking something apart and do minimal to fix it, it eventually becomes unable to fix. for your own wellbeingâand you believed for hers tooâyou called things off. you expressed that it felt like walking on egg shells around her and that she does little to work towards fixing things between the two of you. as much as you love her, you had to break up as it was doing the two of you great damage.
fast forward a year and youâre now working in the pitt, and finally over baranâor so you say⊠you now live in pittsburgh with your little tabby cat, mary, in a cozy little apartment nearby. you love it here, no longer stuck in the stuffy city of philadelphia.
before you can even think to catch a patient, robby pulls your from your thoughts with a tone that you already know wonât carry satisfying news, âas you know iâm leaving on a sabbatical in two days.â he watches you for a moment before continuing, âand with that, we will need two attendings on deck.â
that leaves you questioning, who will be the other attending? turning to him with a curious gaze you ask, âso who will be here to fill in for you?â surprisingly, you never thought about that, needing another attending with you on day shift that is; nor did you really think of who the replacement will be. during your time here, itâs always been you and robby, and for the days he was gone, youâd handle it on your own.
âdoctor baran al-hashimi from the va in philly will be working along side you for the time that iâm gone. sheâs great, from what i have heard,â and heâs already walking away, rubbing his hands with sanitizer though he hasnât touched anything besides his scrubs.
hearing baranâs name makes your heart drop. you havenât heard that name in about a year, let alone spoke it, and hearing him butcher it just makes your skin itch. before he can get far you scurry back to his side, âfrom philadelphia? shouldnât we get someone whoâs closer and physically available?â
âis there a problem i donât know about?â he asks as if he knows that there was once something between the two of you.
âwell, no-â you stammer
âthen physical availability is the least of my worries, as it should be yours,â he murmurs in the last part. âso as long as we have someone in, i am satisfied,â he clasps his hands together as if to signal the conversation is over at his say.
her name falling off of robbyâs tongue rings in your ears nonstop for the rest of your shift, along with the image of her face every time you blink. the thought of having to work with her every weekday for the duration of robbyâs sabbatical is scary to you. the two of you havenât spoken nor seen each other since the rough break up, and knowing your awkwardness and baranâs professionalism, this will be hell on earth for you.
like every morning, it takes everything in you to drag yourself out of bed, and even more to even get out of the door. you were up all night thinking of her. thinking about seeing her again and working with her again, it all drilled a deep pitt in your stomach that had yet to go away.
ây/l/n!â robby shouts from across the floor. he watches as you practically scurry on over though youâre slightly short of urgency. âdr. al-hashimi is due to be here any moment. and just to warn you, she is a rule stickler,â he dumps the information on you like itâs casual stuff.
it takes almost everything in you to tell him that you know that sheâs a rule stickler because thatâs why the two of you went so good together. you only hum in acknowledgment, your heart going a million beats per minute due to the nerves and slight anger. anger pointed towards her for even thinking of coming to the pitt. i mean, you always spoke about moving to work in pittsburgh but you stayed in philadelphia for her, and now sheâs sort of picking up the remains of your now completed dream. maybe itâs just you being petty.
âi think that you two will do excellent together while iâm gone,â and before you can get a word in, his eyes gaze behind you. âmay i present to you, doctor baran al-hashimi,â
knowing that sheâll be starting a new place of work fuzzes up baranâs nerves a bit. not due to the new people or all that, just adjusting to the new environment. she knows sheâll do it well, itâs more so how will people adjust to her.
you turn around, and there she is. sheâs still as beautiful as you remembered. it almost stuns you that baran is actually here. pulling yourself from your thoughts, you introduce yourself as if you two are truly strangers, âdoctor y/n y/l/n.â you smile and nod, trying to shove the dread thatâs pooling in your stomach.
ânice to meet you, dr. y/l/n. baran al-hashimi,â she smiles, sticking her hand out for you to shake it. she holds a look in her eyes that tells you to stay professional.
and you do. you take her hand, still as warm as ever, and shake it with the professionalism she would have wanted. you ignore your heart pounding rapidly against your chest like a beast wanting to get out of a cage. Swallowing down that beast, you speak again, âanyway, i donât want to keep you from chatting with our head attending physician.â you just needed some lame excuse to get out of this dreadful conversation.
robbyâs eyebrows raise in surprise, yet he quickly masks it, knowing that youâve never rushed this much to get to work, not since your first internship. since he knows how hard he works to avoid conversation with gloria, he lets you go with a nod.
all shift, you work like a damn soldier to avoid baran. you let the med students answer her questions and treat it like a learning opportunity.
trinity, the gossip she is, noticed it allâthe tension that simmers thick between you two. âsoâŠâ trinity folds her arms over the high counter in front of you, looking like sheâs up to no good.
already knowing that she might be on your case for something, you reluctantly look up from your computer. âwhat, santos?â you question, your voice sounding a little harsher than you intended it too, but luckily you know that trinity wonât take it to heart.
âwho pissed in your cereal? damnâŠâ trinity mutters though she quickly recovers. âwhatâs up with you and the new attending, hm?â she asks as she leans closer, making it oh so obvious that sheâs gossiping. trinity has some sort of radar that detects tension and weirdness around people, and when youâre around baran, she feels it go off.
âdonât you have some patients to attend to, dr. santos?â baran clips in, making trinity jump slightly and curse under her breath. each syllable was said with such grace and clarity it almost distracts you. if it was one thing you missed when you broke up with her, it was the way she spoke.
swallowing down a witty come back, trinity gets back to work. baran watches with focused eyes as she does before turning back to you. she scans your face for a moment, taking in each perfection, and noting that youâre avoiding her gaze before walking away.
itâs as if all the tension that your body could hold pulsed within you the moment she got near, but came back to sting you as she gazed over your face for a moment too long that made it no longer professional. after making sure that she was a far enough distance, you let out a breath and subtly shake out all of your nerves, and force yourself to get up and check back up on the doctors around.
you stop at the nearest one, trinityâs. she takes a moment before she can get to you, but you respect it. before she can even get a word out, baran slides into the room, almost like a ghost, âmind if i observe?â she always had a knack for just appearing places without making a sound. itâs both scares and amazes you.
trinity, almost as if she has been stunned, sort of buffers. so, you take the chance to fill it, âyou know, it would be best for one of us to. iâll let you sit in on this one, dr. al-hashimi.â
as you attempt to make your exit, but baranâs hand gently takes hold of your forearm, effectively stopping you in your tracks. your breath catches in your throat at the familiar feeling of her hand on you, one you havenât felt in what felt like a million years. realizing what she has done, she quickly brings it back to her side. âi was hoping that iâd get to see you in action, dr. y/l/n,â she smiles, using a tone that she would always when she wanted to get something from you.
you stare at her with a contemplative look swimming between your ears and behind your eyes. fixing your face to a more pleasant expression, you reluctantly agree.
everything goes fine and trinity properly diagnoses appendicitis, earning praise from both you and baran. before either of you know it, a trauma rushes in, needing all hands on deck. âdr. al and dr. y/l/n, i need you two on that!â robby shouts from another trauma room.
the way he says doctor al just makes you want to twitch. al-hashimi isnât hard to say, you think, rolling your eyes.
âforty-two year old male, gunshot wound to the lower abdomen, no exit wound,â the paramedic spits out. âblood pressure 130 systolic, heart rate isnât looking good, bradycardic, and heâs losing a lot of blood.â
everyone springs into action, gloving up. âon three,â you declare. âone, two, three,â you guys successfully move the man from the stretcher and onto a bed. he groans from the sudden movement and pain.
baran always thought it was a bit silly that you counted up instead of down like everyone else. but itâs what makes you unique, she would think.
âcan somebody call or?â cassie asks, momentarily breaking away from her intense focus.
âgood call, cass,â you praise, nodding your head at her in approval. âdennis?â you donât really ask him to do so, but you phrased it in a way that made him know what to do.
hearing you call cassie a nickname she hasnât heard anyone call her makes baranâs skin itch in a weird way and pools her stomach with jealousy.
doctors alike move around the room and the body as if it were a practiced dance. you and baran, though? you two seemed to have your own silent communication system. thatâs what happens when you work with someone for four years and date them for two and a half of those years.
baran and you donât notice the confused glances and unspoken words of the residents around you guys. it wasnât until you needed another tool from samira did you realize what you two were doing. you stare at her quietly for a moment, waiting. she stares back with patient and confused gaze. she looks from your open, glove clad hand, back up to your eyes, eyebrows furrowing further in confusion.
âallis tissue forceps, samira,â baran answers for you. baran watches as the tool lands gracefully in your hand.
baran feels a slight pang of pain in her heart at you not acknowledging her, praising her for knowing exactly what you need. especially when she knows that you would have.
âwhere the hell is garcia or walsh?â you question, your tone growing irritated. yes, you guys are capable at doing your jobs, but where are the experts when you need them?
âtheyâre busy, but they can bring down an intern⊠if you would likeâŠâ dennis suggests with a careful tone, detecting your simmering irritation.
anyone is better than no one, baran thinks. âyes, make the call.â
why in the hell would we want someone who just got here? âno, donât make the call.â
you both speak at the same time and everyone sort of pauses. for the first time in forever, you and baran really look at each other, debating the decision with only your eyes. giving in, you sigh, âbring âem down.â
the operation goes swell, but it leaves you and baran tense.
as the day shift concludes, the night crew slowly starts filling in, baran walks a few paces behind you, debating whether or not to speak with you now. deciding that itâs better to face this sooner than later, she calls out to you in the almost empty parking lot.
you could ignore her, you could carry on with your evening, and keep yourself up at night wondering what she was going to say, so you donât. âwhat, baran?â you turn to her with a tired expression, your voice giving evidence of your exhaust.
âyouâve been avoiding me,â baran states in that tone that you used to always admire. it scared people by how calm she would be during a confrontation, inevitably making them spill their guts. she never used it much on you during the time you guys were together, so using it on you now like this feels foreign to her. âwhy?â
it almost catches you off guard. baran knows you hate confrontations, especially direct ones like this. âiâm not doing this right now, barani,â you sigh, your voice a little sad now.
barani, seriously? you mentally curse yourself. the nickname slips right off of your tongue. itâs what you used to always call baran when you guys were so in love.
hearing the nickname fall clean from your lips almost makes her grin. ânot doing this right nowâŠâ she repeats in a low tone, almost like she is mocking you. âi thought you were one for communication and transparency,â she uses your own words against you, what you repeatedly told her you wanted right before you broke up with her. âwhy are you avoiding me?â
âbecause whatever this isââyou gesture to the general atmosphereââis weird and awkward, and you know it,â you confess. âyou canât just waltz into the ed and act like everything is fine and dandy,â your eyebrows furrow and you cross your arms over your chest.
baran scoffs at your statement, âthis is weird because youâre making it weird. i am actually trying to be professional.â itâs as she predicted. she knew youâd act petty if you guys crossed paths again.
âyou know what? iâm done with this, okay?â you throw your hands up and turn on your heel, clicking the key to your car. you seriously are not in the mood for this, not right now, and maybe at all.
it doesnât have to be a thing, baran knows. part of her just wanted to get a reaction out of you and the other half just wanted you to really speak to her. she misses you, she canât lie.
baran sighs in defeat as she watches you walk away. she mutters something in farsi beneath her breath as she makes her way to her own car, frustrated with everything. frustrated with you. why canât things just be good between the two of you again?
the second you plop into that driver's seat you break down completely. you canât stop the tears from rolling off of your cheeks. you donât even know why youâre crying! maybe itâs all of the pent up anger finally releasing itself after seeing baran, maybe itâs the fact that you miss her, or that you are so unbelievably angry at the situation. why couldnât you just have told her what you felt? you canât go back now, youâve already ruined it for yourself. for her.
