do we have two days to work for the sculpture contest since the festival begins on the 24th? or can our muses only work on their art on the 25th?
hello anon! as mentioned in the event post, “the first two days [of the festival] are open to everyone, and at this time, those participating in the snow & ice sculpture competition will be working on their pieces.” so yes, competitors do have two days to work on their sculpture, and you’re free to structure that however you choose as long as sculpting stops at 10:00 pm on the 25th!

Tourists, competitors, and press have been flooding into Yangwon over the past week, eager for the Festival of Ice to begin. For locals, the boost in business is welcome, though some of the other residents aren’t too happy with the crowds in the streets. Regardless, the mayor and town council are desperate for the event to run smoothly, and all townspeople have been asked to accommodate the guests to the fullest.
The Festival of Ice spans three days ( from January 24 to January 26 ) and takes place entirely outdoors. In addition to its famed sculpture competition, there are a variety of other attractions guests can participate in! Those who wander outside the town limits will find colorful flags and signs strung up pointing the way to a few different events.
One of the ponds outside of town has been transformed into a SKATING RINK. Ice skates rentals are available nearby for a small fee, but guests are welcome to bring their own as well! There’s enough room for both beginners and experts to skate alike - and hopefully avoid any embarrassing collisions. On the evening of January 24, the skating rink will be hosting an amateur ice skating competition sponsored by the Joja Corporation. The prize is a gift voucher for your local JojaMart!
Small holes have been drilled into the frozen stream to allow guests to participate in some ICE FISHING. Fishing rods and different kinds of bait ( including some special local varieties ) are available for sale at the edge of the stream. The types of fish that can be caught in the stream can be found here. Since GLACIERFISH are extremely rare, the Joja Corporation has offered a cash prize to whoever manages to catch the biggest one!
A nearby hill has been transformed into a SLEDDING HILL! Popular with kids and adults alike, sledding is a staple for any winter festival. Those interested can rent a sled from the vendor nearby and enjoy sledding either solo or in duos. Every two hours, the festival staff hold an informal sledding race to see who can reach the bottom first.
The REFRESHMENTS STAND is one of the busiest areas of the festival! It offers warm drinks such as coffee, hot chocolate, and tea free of charge, although the limited snack menu is not free. For the more adventurous folk, the stand also offers fresh snow cones drizzled in local maple syrup, but be careful you don’t get brainfreeze from eating too many of these.
The SNOW AND ICE SCULPTURE COMPETITION is is the main highlight of the festival, and the reason for all the international interest it has garnered over the decades. People from all over the world have arrived in Yangwon to compete to build the biggest, most grand snow or ice sculpture of the season. After breaking off into teams of two to four people, competitors spend the first two days of the festival planning and creating their sculptures out in the cold. Visitors are free to observe their efforts and ask questions, but are asked not to step into the actual construction area itself ( which is sectioned off with orange tape ).
Sculpting stops at 10:00 PM on January 25, and the sculptures must make it through the night to be judged on the morning of January 26. Whatever condition the sculpture is in at 10:00 AM on the 26th is what it will be judged on. The prize for first place is a trophy and a cash prize of 10,000 USD ( as this is an international competition ) along with extensive media exposure. Second and third place winners will also receive a trophy and a cash prize. Sculptures will be left up even after the festival is over to melt naturally.
Entry into the sculpture competition is free, and locals are encouraged to participate to bring more prestige to Yangwon!
The festival will run until 10:00 PM on January 24 and 25, and will end at 3:00 PM on January 26, though attendees are free to leave sooner if they wish. The first two days of the festival are open to all members of the public, while the final day is only open to competitors, judges, and press--though the public are free to observe.
OOC NOTE:
Welcome to Yangwon’s second festival! The Festival of Ice is Yangwon’s version of a celebrated winter festival. In character, the festival takes place over the span of THREE DAYS ( JANUARY 24 - 26 ). The first two days are open to everyone, and at this time, those participating in the snow & ice sculpture competition will be working on their pieces. The final day of the festival is when the judging for the competition will take place ( and will be followed up with another post in two weeks! ) and is only open to competitors, judges, and press.
Out of character, the festival will run from JANUARY 25 - FEBRUARY 8. Members have two weeks to write starters and solos set during the festival, but don’t worry! Threads can continue on for as long as you’d like after the cut off, though no new threads should be started once the deadline has passed. Please tag all festival solos and threads as #yw:icefest20.
We’d also like encourage our members to take this opportunity to start a thread with someone they haven’t interacted with yet. Festivals are the perfect places to strike up a conversation or two with strangers! To facilitate new interactions, we will be compiling any open starters set during the festival and posting them in a separate post for any interested party to respond to. Please make sure to list which activity your muse is participating in at the top of your post.
Those interested in participating in the SNOW AND ICE SCULPTURE COMPETITION may do so in teams of 2 - 4 people. These teams are member selected; the staff will not be assigning them to you. In order to enter, we ask that your team write a thread focusing on any aspect of the sculpting process. The thread should have at least two responses from each participant to qualify, though it doesn’t need to be completed! Please fill out the form located here and submit it to the community blog once you’ve met the requirements. The winner will be announced in two weeks.

The 2020 NEW YEAR’S FESTIVAL has been cancelled due to bad weather! A terrible snowstorm is sweeping through the region. The trail leading to the peak of Yeoshin Mountain is inaccessible, and the mayor is asking people to stay indoors today. Weather forecasters speculate that the storm is expected to last for the next 2-3 days. Until then, be careful out there! Stay warm and stay safe!
[ OOC ] As stated above, the New Year’s festival has been cancelled due to OOC time constraints. In place of it, we have a different event planned for January which we’ll announce in the next few weeks! Thank you for your patience!
Meanwhile, members are free to work the snowstorm into threads or plots if they wish.
A small reminder that the Feast of the Winter Star ends tomorrow! Those who have signed up for the gift exchange should deliver their gifts to their recipients by DECEMBER 31 11:59 PM EST in order to claim an award for their participation in the event. If you’ve already received a submit for the gift exchange, please do post it onto the dash with your muse’s reaction so we can verify your participation!
No threads for the Feast should be started after tomorrow’s deadline, but you may continue your current festival related threads for as long as you’d like.
Everyone who signed up to participate in the GIFT EXCHANGE should have received a submit from the staff with the name of your recipient and further instructions. If you have not received a submit, first check to make sure your submit box is open (we’ve messaged some people who didn’t have submit enabled asking them to do so), but if it is and you still haven’t received anything, please let us know and we’ll look into it.
