“Noted. And of course I’m not saying it merely as a temptation. You’ve been nice to me, so had the situation of kidnapping been real, I’d feel compelled to extend the same kindness.” Avery shrugged, playing the words off as a simple hypothetical. “All the crime I want? Seems a bit generous. What if someone killed another person in front of you? You’d still keep quiet even then? Why not just take the bribe then go to the police? You’d have a killer behind bars and have free stuff. Win-win.” He was curious as to the other’s answer. Perhaps it could lead to something for the future- that is, if Zac’s word could be trusted.

“And this was why my mom always said to be kind to strangers, so they’ll be kind to you after kidnapping,” Zac said, still not taking it seriously despite him having a nagging sense that it wasn’t quite as joking as it seemed. “I mean, maybe try not to get me into legal trouble, maybe. Word to the wise, I’m easily bribed into silence, but I’m probably easily bribed into chattiness too depending on the bribe. Depends on which one is better. I said I was easy, not loyal. Besides, if I tell the police, then I have to be involved in the whole thing and you know what? I don’t really want that drama in my life. That’s the long and the short of it.”

“You sure? I’d make sure the warehouse has decent heating just for you. And homemade meals twice a day. I rarely offer such commodities to hostages. But I suppose, if you don’t want to, I can’t force you.” His words, though playful, held elements of truth within them. Had he actually held interest in Zac, the offered comforts were rarely given. “I’ll keep the sale of your silence in mind for the future. I doubt the teenagers would be as helpful as you.” 

“I’m sure. I won’t say it’s not tempting, but I don’t do well being cooped up. Drives me a little crazy. I appreciate that you’d take such good care of me, though. Unless you’re only saying that to tempt me to not expose you which... it’s working.” Even though he for a bit worryingly wondered how much the other was joking, Zac decided not to pay much attention to it. It didn’t matter to him in the long run. “If it means I keep getting free stuff out if it? Do all the crime you want in front of me. I’m cool with it,” Zac teased, despite being mostly genuine in that comment.

     “ i’m not really looking for someone to pay for my dinner, this isn’t some tinder date. “ teddy rolled his eyes, sticking his hands in his pockets and indicating with his head for the other to follow after him. “ also smoking is disgusting. “

“Geez, ever heard of a joke?” Zac asked, though he just chuckled and didn’t really mean anything by it. It wasn’t said judgmentally. As the other continued, Zac just shrugged. “Well, yeah it is, but I do it anyway. Lots of things are pretty disgusting, but feel pretty great in the moment so we do them anyway, right?”

“And here I was thinking I’d have to duct tape you to a chair in an abandoned warehouse to keep you quiet. But if all it takes is a beer, I’ll gladly buy your silence.” Despite his laughter, Avery idly wondered the truth of the other’s statement. Avery had met a handful who were as easy to buy off as the other claimed, so the possibility was there. “I’d assume so too, or else there’d have to be something exceedingly wrong with the manager’s logic.”

“As much as that sounds like fun, I think I’d like to avoid that particular adventure. My silence is definitely always up for sale. It’s part of why I go around helping potentially criminal strangers, I like the kickbacks,” he said with a laugh, though... that much was almost true and not even as much of a joke as before. “Exactly. Everyone knows everything wrong ever is because of teenagers.”

Avery laughed. “Then I suppose my nefarious plan is still on track. Perfect. Now all I have to worry about is keeping you quiet. Don’t suppose you’ll do so easily?” While his words could be mistaken as menacing to those who hadn’t been listening in to the conversation, the full blown smile on Avery’s face completely ruined their meaning. “Oh, never. I’ve especially never seen an adult leave their keys behind on accident- it’s always those forgetful hooligans. Everything’s always their fault, isn’t it?”

“Worry? Nah, I wouldn’t be too concerned about that, I’m an easy to please guy. Buy me a beer or two and I’ll keep your secret to the grave. Or... well I’ll probably just keep drinking and forget anything I ever knew about it. That’s probably more plausible,” he joked, shaking his head a bit and chuckling. “Exactly. As soon as we hit twenty, it’s like all the childhood mistakes completely disappear and we become completely flawless. I’m sure the building manager knows that and will definitely know where to look for the real culprits at.”

“Ah, you got me. Here I am hoping i’d duped some unsuspecting do gooder into helping me rob these rinky dink apartments blind. You must be a genius to figure out my true intentions.” Avery sighed dramatically, playing off of the other. “Definitely rowdy teenagers.” He confirmed, finding himself enjoying the conversation more as time went on. 

“I mean, it worked? Can I fault you for the plan if it gets you inside? I’m not so sure about that. I guess I’ll just have to live with this on my conscience, what a struggle.” He didn’t sound very worried about that at all, a smirk hanging on his lips. “Of course. You can never trust those hooligans. Now, us adults? We never make mistakes and have to break open doors. Never ever.”

“Would you like me to make him a villain? I’m quite good at that too.” She simply shrugged. She wasn’t one judge people for where they came from or why they did something. Her judgment of people were far more shallow than that. “Well not all of us are blessed with good looks and have people throwing themselves at us so often that it seems like we’re taken. I’m single as a pringle but definitely not ready to mingle with…..people.” Melanie knew she had a heart somewhere but it rarely allowed for friendships let alone relationship. Fear of the past repeating itself prevented her from doing a lot in that department. “My job doesn’t really allow for stability,” she quickly added to shift the blame from herself.

“You don’t have to, I fully believe that if he’s got powers? Very much a villain.” Zac suggested with a nod of his head. “I mean, if he can’t get along with me for twenty minutes at a time? No way he’s going around saving the rest of humanity on a daily basis. I don’t believe it.” Not that it was a good indicator of someone’s morality, but Zac thought a little too highly of himself sometimes. “Oh come on, you don’t have people throwing themselves at you? I don’t know if I believe that. You just have to put yourself out there. Be interested but not too interested. Just play the game and people end up caught up in it all,” he advised with a shrug of his shoulder. “Maybe you’re going about mingling wrong. You don’t have to make any commitments, you know. In, out and done. That’s the beauty of being single.”

    teddy considered his options, it wasn’t suppose to be dark for at least another forty five minutes and he was fairly hungry - all things considered. “ i could show you this bar then, cheap pizza and beer but you’d have to deal with me because i’m not going just to leave. “ 

It wasn’t more than a moment before Zac found himself nodding with a carefree shrug, cigarette still hanging from his lips. “I mean, I’m not going to pay for you if that’s what you’re looking for, but if you want to stick around? I’m not going to complain.”

She figured as much. If she wanted any details she was probably going to have to weasel through the crowd && pester the men in blue. But they were so far out of reach at the moment, caught up in the chaos. “ Oh no, it’s fine. “ Pidge replied with a sweet smile, brushing off his apology. “ Sometimes rumors go around about who did what, so I figured someone in the crowd would be a good start. “

It wasn’t exactly easy to see what it the mess looked like. What with people scrambling to get a glimpse, yellow police tapes peaking through the gaps. A shattered window or two was kind of in sight. She flicked her gaze away from the man && leaned up on her toes, the small girl trying to see over the crowding. — With little luck. She eventually huffed && leaned back onto her heels. “ If we missed all the action, I don’t see what the point is. Broken windows && a busted door can’t be that exciting to look at. “ Unless she really was missing something.

The trouble with Zac was that he occasionally had some trouble keeping his own ego in check and this didn’t seem like it was going to be an exception when she motioned she wondered if people might have heard names. Zac shrugged a little bit. “I might have heard a name or two floated around, but it’s impossible to say if they’re right, isn’t it?” he suggested, doing well at seeming like he was just casually mentioning that to try and be helpful and not just to leak his name out there.

Shrugging again, Zac was at least good at keeping his mouth shut when it came to things that were important and could actually incriminate him. “I’m going to be honest with you, I see a crowd and I just go. Mostly I’m just happy I wasn’t on duty last night because this looks like I mess I do not want to have to be involved in.”

Amelia returned the toasting gesture with a soft giggle. “And you do you because more strawberry juice for me.” She took a drink before putting her glass down on the table and listened to Zac’s words. “Well, if you’re going to be bearing boxes of pizza around, my door’s always open if you need a place to stay.” The girl blushed when he mentioned his mark, answering the question she didn’t get a chance to ask. “Thanks, mine’s a star so I guess we’re not a match.” She mumbled sheepishly. “So I guess if I ever encounter you’re the man to call hey?”

“Exactly. Everyone wins and that’s what I like to see.” Or more that he wanted himself to win and didn’t want to deal with people being angry with him for losing. “In that case, I might find my way over a few times here and there, you never know. Whenever my roommate kicks me out, you might end up with a free meal.” Zac shrugged. “Unless I wasn’t telling you the truth, but it wasn’t very likely from the start that we’d match. Ah... I don’t know about that. I’m pretty happy the way I am if we’re being honest.”

“that’s really noble,” taylor was amazed by the new knowledge, “are you… invincible to fire or something?” she pried. “oh, sugar baby is great, I mean, you’re not too bad physically.” 

“What? Not any more than anyone else,” he commented with a shake of his head. After all, Zac had started the process to become a firefighter long before the powers had come around. “But it beats a boring desk job all day long.” Zac shrugged, always a little too active for anything else. “Not too bad? I’m crushed,” he said, putting a hand over his heart as though he’d really been hurt by that.

  “ i guess your limits are better then that, “ he agreed reluctantly, standing up with a sigh from how much his body cried out in protest.  “ why are you here then? you can’t even buy anything good in this part, it’s all actual lawn clippings. “ it wasn’t entirely true, there was good pizza at least. “ i mean, i’m walking home that way. i could drop you off. “

“Because this was just where I’d ended up?” And maybe because Zac wanted to do a sweep of the area to see if there was anything worth trying to steal or otherwise cause trouble about around the area another day. “Really? Dang. I mean, will I sill drink it? Probably. As long as it’s beer or as long as it’s pizza, I’m not going to complain. I never claimed to have the best taste in the world.” Glancing around a moment, Zac shrugged. “Sure, I never turn away good company.”

Avery laughed. “Noted. But trust me, I wouldn’t be dumb enough to commit a crime in my own apartment building.” Not unless he had a good alibi, but even then he’d be wary to do anything too obvious. Even doing something near the place felt like too much danger. And getting caught for doing something stupid was- well, stupid. “Just a little. Either way, I suppose they’ll have to fix the door. Shame.” He said, shaking his head playing it as if he was truly disappointed in the fact. “Exactly. And it was like this when I got here. They should really up their security- someone could have broken in.”

“Assuming this is your own apartment building and you’re not just trying to get me to move on and pretend like I didn’t see anything,” Zac pointed out, raising an eyebrow as though he was actively suspicious of the other but it was all clearly playful. “If only they had someone they could get to pay them back for it, but... I didn’t see a thing. You? Must have been some rowdy teenagers, huh?” Zac just grinned as they went on, nodding his head. “Honestly, to think that someone could easily break in like that. They should be thanking us for bringing it to their attention.”

     teddy smiled slightly, glancing back down at his shoes and hands, gripping his fists for a moment. “ at least you know your limits, even if they’re borderline concerning. what would it take to make you stop smoking- the inability to use your mouth? “ he asked with a slightly smug grin. “ you could try the supermarket but they have shitty selections. the liquor store is down the street. “

“At least I have limits? I know guys who would be on their death bed and still want the IV to be ninety proof,” he joked with a shake of his head, not apologizing for his less than healthy lifestyle choices. “The day I stop being able to use a lighter? Probably then,” he decided with a chuckle. “Don’t usually come to this part of town... liquor store you say? I don’t know, cheep and shitty suits me fine.”

   there was something that was running through his body, almost like a current of electricity that he knew stemmed from the tension of waiting for the sun to set. his skin itched for the familiarity that came with night, teddy could slip into his routine that made the days a bit more bearable. 

    he stretched his fingers, rubbing his hands along the sides of his jeans, glancing around the parking lot of the plaza he worked at. the market wasn’t closed yet but he had punched out, tired of the blindly bright lights that reflected off the shiny, white tiles; he kept his uniform on, the dark red apron tied around his waist but the top part hanging down to reveal the white polo embroidered with his name on the left side. 

     “ i’m not carrying any more groceries and i don’t smoke, so move along, “ he suddenly spoke, taking note of the new comer who seemed to be approaching him. 

He’d only just gotten off which meant that Zac was feeling dead tired, but of course it wasn’t going to stop him from picking up beer or a pizza first. Maybe even both if he felt like he had the energy for it. Beer first, without a doubt. He almost didn’t notice the figure, a little surprised when he was addressed, though he supposed the cigarette hanging from his mouth would have given the other some reason to suspect he was looking for something. “That’s fine, but the day I can’t carry a six pack on my own? That’s the day I give up drinking. I’m also not about to let you bum one, so that’s not an issue.” He chuckled, shaking his head as he searched in his pocket for a light. “If you wanted to point me in the direction of beer though, that’d be appreciated.”

“Maybe he grew up without mommy and daddy’s attention so this is how he makes up for it —by getting yours. Albeit in a stupid way but people with parent issues tend to be a little messed up anyways.” Melanie didn’t know Zac’s roommate, only through the stories she gets from Zac so she didn’t feel bad passing judgement. Then again, she didn’t feel bad about most of the mean things she has said. “Devil Wears Prada it is. Warm Bodies is cute but it reminds me of how fucking lonely I am especially with Singles Awareness Day coming soon.”

“Now you’re giving him a sob story? I dunno. I mean... I do know, but if I tell you then it sort of proves his whole point of me knowing his secrets or whatever. I don’t know.” Zac just rolled his eyes, probably knowing too much about Ben, but there was nothing to be done about that. “Singles awareness day? We need to be aware of them? If it doesn’t involve lonely girls looking for attention, I’m not sure I want to participate in that.”

“If I say it any other way, it wouldn’t be a joke.” Avery replied, waving his red stained hands to prove his point. This time, it was solely paint, so he had no need to worry about the other’s reaction. Moving away from the door in silent agreement to the other’s request, Avery watched as the other worked. “Handy.” he commented absently. Perhaps he himself should carry around knives more often- for moments like these of course. “Nothing to tell them, right? After all, we did absolutely nothing to cause the damage.” 

“I’m suddenly questioning my decision to let you into the place. Any crimes you commit, totally not my fault, right? I’m just an innocent and helpful bystander.” Not that the other had any plans to commit crimes just then as far as Zac could tell, but his power wasn’t foolproof by any stretch of the imagination. “I figured I could bust the door down too, but this seemed a little less damaging... a little.” He chuckled. “You pick up some tricks after enough locked doors. Yes... you’re right. I don’t even live here, why would I ever know what happened to that particular door?”
