Happy First Contact Day!

how does it feel to be the funniest person on earth
On December 6th 1989, fourteen young women, many of them engineering students, were murdered in the mass shooting at Montreal’s École Polytechnique that was prompted by the killer’s hatred of women and what he said was “fighting feminism”. Reason #1,324,789 of why I love this show.
This was a casual side conversation between Bashir and Sisko about a fellow crew member, completely unrelated to the episode’s plot, and its just so sweet.
It’s nice to know that if you’re a pregnant father-to-be on DS9, your buddies Julian and Miles will build you a hatchling pond, buy you baby clothes, and throw you a shower eagerly attended by the station’s commanding officer (who was practically beaming with joy when he found out that you were expecting).
How wonderful.
This is so much more, though. This is such a massive subversion of 90s toxic masculinity.
A male character is producing offspring, and two male characters are giving him a baby shower, which at the time (and still is) the dominant joke for male characters is how to get out of attending a baby shower.
Add to that Sisko is a absolutely giddy at the thought of new babies, during a time when black men were portrayed at the peak of the toxic masculinity charts, and were usually stereotyped as absent fathers.
The fact that Sisko is a black single father- a very involved, very supportive, very *present* black single father, was a *really big deal*- the writers knew this and were very thoughtful and deliberate with how they approached it. And it’s beautiful.
Sisko is rarely a perfect father, but he’s always a good one.
Sisko canonically adores infants, babies and children of all kinds. From Jem’hadar, to Bajoran, to Humans to Changelings, Sisko’s face lights up and his voice gets soft. Every time he is confronted with a youngling of some kind he is overjoyed and I adore that.
I'm reminded of this:

A Nebraska teenager is facing criminal charges alleging she aborted a fetus in violation of state law, after authorities obtained her Facebo
"A Nebraska teenager is facing criminal charges alleging she aborted a fetus in violation of state law, after authorities obtained her Facebook messages using a search warrant. Seventeen-year-old Celeste Burgess, who is being tried as an adult along with her mother Jessica Burgess, is awaiting trial in Madison County District Court on charges that they broke a Nebraska law banning abortions after 20 weeks.
Celeste and her mother were charged in July with allegedly removing, concealing or abandoning a dead human body and concealing the death of another person after the Norfolk Police Department received a tip claiming Celeste had miscarried in April at 23 weeks of pregnancy and secretly buried the fetus with her mother's help. The case was first reported by the Lincoln Journal Star."

OR MayBE WE SHOULD GET A CHEERLEADER! THEY’RE USED TO GOING UP HIGH
OH LOOK, THE CHEERLEADER HAS DONE IT
I love when star trek has alien characters and your first instinct is always to assume their species is just Like That whenever they do something ridiculous and then every time you meet more of the fucking, blorbogians or whatever nobody else acts like that
Spock. Jadzia. Worf. Etc. None of these people are normal for their respective cultures either it's JUST them
That’s because Starfleet attracts weirdos!
The Federation is a post-scarcity society, so most citizens have near infinite free time to goof around with art, education, or entertainment. But what if you’re not that type? What if you’re a troublemaker, or wayyyyy too into strange bugs, or simply will not shut the fuck up about gaseous stellar phenomenon?
Starfleet’s for you baby!
Starfleet is where parents send their rowdy kids to go break stuff. It’s like year-round summer camp, but also helpful. Starfleet channels all that energy into first contact & protection.
So of course nobody in Starfleet is “normal”.
TRUE it's because there aren't any neurotypicals in starfleet. That'd do it
did you hear about the Gatineau police beating and arresting a Senegalese diplomat?
Quebec is asking its provincial police watchdog (BEI) to investigate after a Senegalese diplomat was reportedly beaten by Gatineau officers.
The woman was "handcuffed and savagely beaten to the point that she had difficulty breathing, which led to her evacuation by ambulance to hospital," the ministry alleged.
Police, however, had a different version of events.
In a statement, the Gatineau police service (SPVG) said officers arrived at the diplomat's home around 1:30 on Tuesday to assist a bailiff in executing a warrant.
They said the woman was aggressive and refused to coorperate, allegedly striking one officer and biting another.
"At no time did the person mention having been injured or having pain when questioned," the statement reads.
---------
If she had to be sent to the hospital, the evidence is all over her body!! The audacity of the police to say she didn’t complain about being in pain so, therefore, she wasn’t in pain.
