The days where Spinel got to enter the archives were more treasured than any big ceremonial day. ––Don’t tell that to any of the royal consulars, and Diamond forbid, the actual royal members though. With everything the gems aspired to do, they needed every advantage they could use. While some gems had permission to explore new resources, she was assigned ( more like, volunteered ) to dig through old resources to see what they could recycle.
With an arm full of artifacts already, she supposed it was time to check out. Counting everything she picked up, this was worth a few weeks of research then another few, long, weeks of report writing. Not to mention the eye strain she’d have to endure. Though at the thought of her eyes, she noticed something out of the corner of her eyes.
Or maybe she started thinking of her eyes after seeing this artifact.
She picked up what seemed like a jeweler’s monocle, rotating it around in her hand to get a feel of the weight. She glanced around to see if anybody was keeping an eye out on her before she pressed it against the left lens of her glasses.
“Aw. Dusty lil’ thing.” With a strong breath, she blew against the dust off the lenses.
Emerald didn’t really have any control over her physical form these days, but she did all she could to shine brightly after having the dust blown off. Perhaps if she just tried hard enough, she could show off some of the luster she’d once commanded.
The gem holding her had said something? Maybe? But the little monocle was in too much shock to try and catch it, frantically trying to take the whole room in at once. After who knows how long of staring at the same exact wall, the artifact lined shelves surrounding her were a lot of visual interest. Colors she hadn’t seen in so long, movement, lights, it was breathtaking.
If she was being taken off the shelf, it likely meant that she had a job to do. And, for all that she’d once hated it, if she had a job to do it at least meant she wouldn’t be bored for a little while.
Emerald could’ve sworn she could feel herself vibrating with excitement (if only such a thing were possible).
