Israeli prison forces at Damon Prison in Haifa carried out at least 10 raids on sections holding Palestinian women detainees in March and April, the Palestinian Prisoners Society said on May 10, with raids involving “beatings, forcing detainees to lie on the ground and handcuffing them behind their backs.”

Based on testimonies from recently released detainees, women were subjected to assaults, strip searches, solitary confinement, starvation, overcrowding and medical neglect. Some were reportedly held in solitary confinement for more than two weeks, while overcrowded cells forced many to sleep on the floor.

The group said one detainee lost around 30 kilograms in custody, while women with chronic illnesses, cancer patients and pregnant women were denied adequate medical care. Most Palestinian detainees — including men, women and children — are held over alleged “incitement” or without any charges under Israel’s “administrative detention” policy.

Prisoner advocacy groups say abuse has escalated since the start of Israel’s genocidal war on Palestine’s Gaza in October 2023.

More than 9,400 Palestinians are currently held in Israeli prisons and detention centres, according to Palestinian and Israeli rights groups. Around 90 of them are women and girls.
