Guide to Changing Town Tree Size
Okay, this is my quick little guide to editing the size of your town tree for megantheanimalcrossinggirl and juustinthyme and the other anons that asked. *This guide assumes you know how to dump RAM/use LeafTools, and you can find guides for those here (RAM / Tools) if you do not!Â
The first thing I recommend is making a save backup, which you can find a QR code for here. Follow all those instructions carefully! As long as you backup your game you donât have to worry about bricking your game. When youâve done that, download the hex editing program of your choice: HxD for Windows, 0xED for Mac.
Load up your mayor and get to a point where you can move around uninterrupted. Press the home button, click the Internet icon in the top bar, and press URL. Type in bit.ly/acnl_dump exactly like that when prompted, and if you see a green screen, youâve done it right. Now all you have to do is save and quit and then power off your DS. Take out the SD card from the DS and put in into the SD card reader on your computerâon mine itâs right below the trackpad. It should take your SD card just fine.
Open your hex editor of choice (Iâm using HxD) and then click the file folder. It should automatically open your SD card, but if it doesnât, just go to the root folder of your OS and youâll see the SD card icon.
You should now have a screen that looks something like this:
The blue text is your Offset. This is how we know which lines to edit. The middle text is the bytes themselves. Those blue numbers above are also part of the offsetâyou navigate to a line in the offset (letâs say C0) and then find a blue number above the bytes (letâs say 03). When you navigate to the intersection of 0xC0 and 03, you get 0xC3. HxD has a helpful little bar at the bottom that shows which offset/byte group youâve selected. The last section is junk text and you donât need to worry about it.
Now you want to navigate to offset 0x5C730. This is where the âdays playedâ information is stored. Once you find it, look for 01 and 02 in the blue offset bar above the bytes. Highlight those three bytes in those locations, 00, 01, and 02âyou want to have six things in total, two numbers/letters in three bytes. It should look like this:
Notice at the very bottom it says Block: 5C730-5C732? Thatâs exactly what you want it to say.
Now, with the text still highlighted, type in 40 77 1B, just like that. It will turn red once itâs been modified, and thatâs what it should look like. This is the byte information for having 500+ hours logged in the gameâs RAM. But you still arenât done! Now you need to find 5C7BA and 5C7BB. You want to have two things highlighted this time. This is what you should see.
That has to be edited to F4 and 01. This is the âdays playedâ aspect of the RAMâthis will make the gameâs memory think youâve played for 500 days total.
Once youâve done that, save the file and close the editor. Eject the SD card, put it back in the DS, and load your mayor as normal. Now you want to go to the train station (I do this for safety because I never move the train station, so thereâs no chance of exiting into a faint loop). Youâll do the same process as dumping the file, but instead youâll go to bit.ly/acnl_inject. Go outside and the town tree may have changed. If it did, just save and quit and reload to make the change permanent. If it didnât try time travelling a day in advanceâthatâs what I had to do and my tree grew immediately.
And there you go! You can use hex editing for things like changing your player/town names, changing hair color and style, even grass pattern and villager personalities. You can even manually upgrade your house size and exteriors. Itâs neat!
