Stations Trained at: Throwing Knives, Running (Track), and Throwing Axes
Tributes Interacted With: No one
Injuries: None
Notable Developments: Im independent. Many tributes seem to not notice me. I learned how to throw a knife well today. I dont think anyone even knew I came to training besides the gamemakers.
I walked out of my suite and into the hallway for my first day of training. I close the door behind me and enter the elevator. I click the button that leads me to the training room and take a deep breath. I couldnt have been more nervous then ever and when I got down to the training room I saw most of the tributes were already there. I wave my hand up to all of them and silently walk over to the throwing knives. Back at home I used knives that were bigger to slaughter animals but I figured it wouldn't be that different. I was wrong.
I pick a knife up and aim it at a target. I let the tip slip off my finger tips and into the air. The knife missed the target completely. I grunt in annoyance and look up to the trainer. He comes next to me and tells me to angle my arm at a 45 degree angle and to place the blade in between my thumb and index finger. He also constructs me to stand properly and straight. I follow his instructions and throw another knife. The knife sinks into the outside layer of the bullseye zone. I practice a few more times and soon I got the hang of it. "Thank you." I say to the trainer.
I look around the room and see everyone talking and making friends. I wasnt that type of person. So as if no one cared to see me I walk over to the Track. The instructor tells me to do a 3 lap warm up and then a series of minimun 200 meter suicides. I do as he says and by the time I was done I was on the floor sweating. "Do you feel the burn." He asks me, bending over to me. "Yeah, I do." I say quickly out of breath, knowing this improved my endurance and speed. "Thanks." I say as I jog off to my last station for today.
I walk to the axe station. I had used an axe a few times back at home but nothing major like the ones here. I take a throwing axe and using the skills I learned from the throwing knives, hit bullseye with the axe. It turns out the axes are easier then the knives for me. I get a few practice throws and then I move onto the big axes. I practice swinging them above my head and building strength for it. I chop of a few pieces of food and than move to slice a dummy into several pieces. After I felt I had a hand of it I put it down and left the training station.
I skipped lunch while I was at the track station but that doesn't matter I wasn't even hungry. As if no one saw me I snuck back to my room and had a small meal and went to bed.
B: Athelea and Zane from District 10 next. Those outfits are amazing, simple with the District 10 emblem engraved into the belt buckles.
D: The belts and boots obviously made of leather.
B: Athelea looks like she's enjoying herself, her waves and smiles are well received by the audience, but we caught that little blush Athelea! Don't think we didn't! *crowd roars*
D: Zane looks a little shocked though, he's whipping his head back and forth like he doesn't know what to do!
B: He sure is flailing but he's clasped his hand into Athelea's and he seems to have calmed down! He's relaxed enough to wave at the onlookers now.
D: And they're both into the City Circle! Waiting for the President's Speech
My eyes widened as he pulled the chain from his pocket. I was curious to see if there was more to his token from home than a silver chain, no matter how pristine it was. Once the chain was fully revealed, I noticed a small weapon in the center, one that my father used to use at a young age.
“It’s beautiful,” I mused, admiring the small chain and pendant. It made my rusted old locket seem like so much less. The chain shone in the light from the chandelier, reflecting off small bits of light as it turned.
“I can promise you it will be something neither of you are expecting,” Nerida had walked over while Zane was showing me his token, apparently bored with the fashion talk of our escort. “Now less friendliness, let’s get down to business. We only have a little while before we arrive in the Capitol and by that time we need your appearances chosen and perfected to the tee,” her voice was sharp and to the point, her eyes never leaving either mine or Zane’s. “Any questions,” she said, with a sickly sweet smile splayed on her lips.
I stepped back has Nerdia approached. I had no questions for her so I stood silent. I lingered back to sit on a the sofa, chewing on a piece of cupcake. Nerdia looked at me to see if I had any questions I shook my head and just wanted to listen. I dont know what they are going to do all I know is that they will make us look desirable.
I slip back my token into my pocket. I decided to wear it after the parades. Just then a sharp pain felt my stomach. I raise my eyebrow in observation, feeling my stomach turn. "Excuse me." I say as I sprint to the end of the cart. "Which way is the bathroom." I say anxiously to the avox. The avox points forward and lifts 4 fingers. Room 4, I figure.
I sprint to the bathroom and began to throw up everything ive eaten in the last 2 days. The nervousness started to hit me, that I was in the Hunger Games. Nerdia came rushing over. "Oh sweetie its okay." She said helping me up. She helped me back to the couch. "Just rest a little while." She said and turned back to Athelea.
I laid on the couch, feeling nauseous. All I can think of now is what will happen in the games, and the death of other human beings.
“Hello Nerida,” I said with a smile. I definitely didn’t want to get off on the wrong foot with the person who was more or less in charge of me until the arena. Just then our escort entered the room, obviously enthralled with whatever new fashion Nerida was wearing. A quieted and obviously one-sided conversation ensued between the two of them, leaving Zane and I to our own devices.
I was in my own world, when Zane whispered something in my direction. I have been unconsciously clutching the locket where it laid on my neck. “It’s a locket, actually,” I glanced down at the worn golden color. “I have yet to find out what it holds,” I said, looking back up at Zane. For all I knew, Maddox’ mother could have simply found an empty locket and thought of me. If there was anything my parents taught me it was to hold onto hope.
“It’s my token from home,” I said with a small smile. “What about you, did you bring something?”
I stared at the locket for quite some time as she was explaining it to me. It was so shiny, so clean. I look back up to Athelea to see she had finished talking. "Yes, I have something with me. I pull out a silver neckless with a bronze machete attached to the middle point of it from my pocket.
"Its a gift my family got me for my 14th birthday." I said holding the neckless high over my head. "Its pretty fascinating actually." I look back to Athelea, "So what do you think the arena will be this year?" I asked, trying to keep the conversation going.
“I bet it’s beautiful,” I said, turning back to give him a small smile before I pulled my eyes away from his again. Thinking of his parent’s farm reminded me of what I had back home. I found my fingers wrapping around the locket again, and I shook the thoughts out of my head. Just as Zane asked a question I wasn’t able to answer, our mentor walked through the car door, her blonde hair in waves around her shoulders.
“We will be to the Capitol in time for dinner,” she said with a small smile. I tried to recall her games, but I assumed they had been ones that my parents successfully sheltered me from. “I’m Nerida, I’ll be in charge of making sure one of you gets out of that arena alive.”
I stood back a little as I saw our mentor, Nerdia enter the room. "Oh okay." I replied. I peered out the window to see trees rush by. The hovering of the train almost made it feel like we were flying. I look over at Athelea who was wrapping around her fingers around some locket.
I walk over to her to see what it was. "Whats that." I whisper to her before looking back at our mentor. Before she could answer a number of possibilities ran through my head, as to why she has it. But I guess thats for me to find out.
I took Zane’s hand in mine, and met his gaze. A simple handshake later and I was the first to break the lingering stare. I had known people who were able to see what you were feeling by what your eyes held, and I had things I’d like to keep hidden. I glanced around the car again, only noticing now that this was only one of many rooms we would be led to. The furnishings must have cost upwards of my parent’s entire estate.
“So, Zane” I asked turning around to look back at him, “I haven’t seen much of you around back home so it looks like we’re a blank slate.” I smiled back at him before turning around and grabbing a pastry off the silver tray. I inspected it, the fruit looking so fresh it seemed almost fake. Everything in the room seemed to have a look as though if you touched something the image would ripple and the mirage would fade away.
I gestured my hand away from her. I glanced around the cart room looking at all the fine furnishings and paintings. I couldn't believe how clean everything was, it almost seemed unreal.
"Thats because im always working on my parents farm." I responded to Athelea as I watched her grab a pastry. I move towards the cupcake cart and grab a simply red velvet cupcake with cream cheese frosting on the top. I take a bite of it letting the soft sponge sink into my mouth. I never tasted anything like it, it tasted delicious. "Do you know when we will be at the Capitol?" I asked Athelea, taking another bite into my cupcake.
Once we finally pushed through the crowd of families to enter the train, I audibly gasped at the furnishings. I had never seen anything so rich before, from the table full of enough food to feed multiple families to the plush carpet that made me want to slip my shoes off and bury my toes in it. I pulled at the hem of my dress as I was left alone with my district partner in the car of the train. I normally wasn’t nervous around people, but I was sure that despite my attempts at covering it up, one could see the few streaks of tears that I had let fall.
I clutched the locket that I had secured around my neck, and turned to my partner. The last living piece of home I had. “I’m Athelea,” I said with as bright a smile as I could muster, “it’s a pleasure to meet you.”
I walked onto the train, stunned at what has happened in the last hour. I looked on and see my District partner, Athelea. I didnt really pay attention to her through the reaping because of what Caleb had destructed but once I got a glance at her I saw...I saw that she was beautiful.
"Im Zane, its nice to meet you too." I said choking back the pain in my throat from being nervous. I gestured my hand over to shake her hand, while trying to keep eye contact with her. I knew that this was going to be a long adventure.
I was quickly rushed into the Justice Building and locked into a room. I didn't know how to react, only confusion can whirl my brain as I waited for anyone to visit me. I leaned against the wall, "There were so many names in that bowl....why me. Maybe the odds weren't in my favor" He thought.
A few moments later my three triplet older siblings were rushed into the room. I locked back as I saw them come in, Colin, Mark, and Pandora. "Hi." I said in a hushed tone. I noticed the mascara lining down Pandora's face, I could tell she had been crying.
"Listen kid, if you want to win this you got to think smart." Colin said leaning in closer to me. I didn't give him a response, only a blank star into his eyes. "Come here." He gestured as he locked his arms around me. Soon followed by Mark and Pandora joining in. We grouped hugged for a moment until the peacekeepers came in. "Times up." He said as he grabbed Pandora's arm harshly. "Dont touch her like that" Colin screamed as he pushed the peacekeeper. I stood back in shock.
Mark gave me one last hug and rushed out of the room followed by Pandora and Mark. I took a deep breath, some how managing to hold my tears.
A few seconds later my parents and Caleb rush into the room. "Sweetie come here." My mom said as she ran to hug me. I locked my arms around her waste, "Mom, im scared." I whisper in her ear. I can hear my mom choking back her tears trying to tell me everything was going to be okay and that I will win. But there are 24 human beings fighting to win, 24, chances are I will die.
My mom let go of me and next Caleb came and leaped into my arms. "You need to win for me Zane! You need to!" He shouted. "Shhh Caleb, Im going to try." I said calmly. I put Caleb down and walked over to my father. My father just stood there, still like a rock. I gave him a hug goodbye has the peacekeepers come in. "No!" I hear Caleb scream as he ran to hug me. "Caleb you need to go!" I shouted trying to push him off me. "Go!"
The peacekeeper came and yanked him off me. "Let go of me!" Caleb began to scream as he punched the peacekeeper in the face. Next thing I hear is the sound of a gun cocking back. I look over to see the head peacekeeper of our district holding Caleb at gun point. Everything silenced. "Caleb go." I whispered. He looked back at me, with his red eyes and then walked out peacefully. The peacekeepers nodded at me and then left, slamming the door behind them.
I took a deep breath and sat in my seat. Everything....everything is happening so fast I cant process what has happened. All im waiting for is for reality to hit me hard.
I wake up to the early morning sound of birds chirping, and cows mooing. I take a deep breath as I realize what day today is...Reaping Day.
I get off my bed and wonder myself towards my younger brothers room. I knock on his door...no answer. "Caleb." I whisper as I creek the door open. I see him on his bed crying, scared for the reaping. This is his first year. I bite my lip as I run towards him. "Everything is going to be okay, you're not going to get reaped Caleb." I whisper as I brush my fingers through his hair. Caleb looks up at me and hugs me. "I just don't want to be reaped" He said as the tears on his eyes soaked up my shirt.
"Come on pal." I said as I stood up. I throw a pair of jeans and a white T-shirt on his bed. "Get dressed." I say as I walk out the door. I walk back to my room to find my 3 older siblings standing there. They are all 23, illegible for the reaping. I run up to Mark, Colin, and Pandora and give them a giant hug. "Goodluck." Colin whispers in my ear. I feel the vibrating of his voice enter my hear as I step away.
I get dressed in green overalls with a plain white t-shirt underneath. I run up back to Caleb's room and see he has dressed himself. I take his hand as we head towards the kitchen where our parents are. I take a glass of water as we hear the reaping bell ring. Caleb gasps and backs into the wall. "Come on Caleb lets go." I say. Caleb begins to scream in refusal. I take him throw him over my shoulders. "We need to go!" I shout as we head out the door.
Caleb stopped crying but I continued to hold him over my shoulders. As we get to the check in-line I put him down. "They are going to draw blood Caleb its going to be quick and easy." I say to him. Caleb nods. Next thing we know we are separated into age groups. I managed to mouth goodbye to him before I could see him no longer.
I stand tall at my age group, 17. "Only 2 more years and I'm done." I begin to think as the escort interrupts my thoughts. "Welcome District 10 to the 16th Annual Hunger Games!" A man wearing all orange cheers. The rest of what he says was just a blur to me. Until he walks over to the girls reaping bowl. "Athelea Harte!" The man cheers. I roll my eyes back just waiting for him to call the males.
Next he walks over to the male bowl. I dips his hand in and swerves it around until he reached a note card all the way to the bottom. I managed to catch my last breath of air before he calls it. "Zane Mercade!" The man cheers.
A second later I hear a scream from the crowd. I shoot over before I could react to my name being called to see Caleb running into the aisle towards me. "Oh.. no." I said as a tear rolled down my face. "Caleb!" I screamed as a peacekeeper comes and tackles him before he could progress any further. I stare at the peacekeeper removing Caleb from the crowd until I feel a slight push from my back. 5 peacekeepers were lined up pushing me towards the stage. Everything is happening so fast I cant even react. I stand on the stage with no emotion, only confusion.
I daze into the crowd as the peacekeepers introduces the District to this years tributes. "I'm going to be fighting to the death" Is all I could think of before i was evacuated into the Justice Building.
