Zazzy is the easy and fun way to create your own stylish jewelry. We bring the design and production of jewelry to everybody with the help of modern 3D printing technology.
We love happy users, which is why we always look for ways to cut costs so you can make a healthy profit on your products. However, we care even more about the quality, because we know great quality will result in returning customers.
Recently we added a new .925 sterling silver to the mix and I would like to use this post to give a bit more insight into the decisions we made. This new silver is not only more affordable ($23) than before but also a lot faster (ships within 1 week). However, we didn’t go with the cheapest or fastest option; we picked the best option.
Please see two pictures below. The right one is a designs that shipped yesterday, the left one is one of the many samples that we got from different suppliers (what you will find in most Etsy shops) to compare quality levels. We made the photo with our phones and didn’t do any photoshop to make one look better than the other;).
As you can see there is a huge difference in how the piece has been finished (a lot less shiny, dark sides) and the level of detail in the engraving. Although the right picture would have been 25% cheaper, we think that in the long run everybody is better off with products that look like the right piece in the picture.
The customer because they have a nicer looking product, that they will enjoy more.
The seller because the customer will hopefully get back for more and refer the products to their friends by showing off the necklace.
And finally Zazzy, because we believe that if our sellers are happy, they will use our services more and more.
We've just added a whole new range of materials to the Zazzy platform. It is a lot faster, with standard turn-around times of 3 days, your design can be a lot more detailed and as a bonus is cheaper as well! That sounds awesome right!?
These are some designs from our beta testers that we like a lot! So what changed exactly? We introduced a new technology to make necklaces ($4) and keychains ($2) that can be shipped within 3 days. The materials we made available right now are wood & acrylic, but expect (precious) metals soon as well.
Head over to our editor to check it out for yourself or read more to learn how to make the perfect piece below.
How to Design The Perfect Piece
Designing is quite straightforward! You can use 3 colors: white, black & gray. White will be cut out, gray will be engraved and black will be untouched.
Make sure your artwork resonates with your potential customer to maximize your sales! Pricing for necklaces starts at $4, and from our beta users we know you can easily sell these for $12 or more which means great profits for you!

This is the first edition in our how to design blog series. In this post we will discuss how to get from an idea to a great on-demand made necklace. As a theme I picked “happy spring”. The weather is slowly getting better here at Zazzy HQ, so I wanted to design a flower and at the same time express happiness about it with a smily.
First I visited websites like the nounproject (that is also integrated into our editor), to search for cool flower and smily artwork. As I wanted more organic shapes and an unconventional smily, I spent quite some time searching for the perfect match but in the end found these two and combined them into one black and white image.
After this initial research I went into the Zazzy editor. I uploaded the image but from the first preview, I didn't quite like the hoop and although I liked the cut-out mouth, I didn't like the cut-out for the eyes. Luckily you can tweak the design with a couple of settings in the editor. First I changed under attachment the settings to One point (center) and punch a hole to make the design a little bit more elegant. Please note that this might not work well with just any design, so try different options and see which one looks best for yours.
Next I chose to select Emboss under Fill Method. This makes sure the black parts are embossed and all enclosed white parts are engraved instead of cut-out. This small tweak gives the following results, which I think worked out great!
Let us know what you think about this custom made 3D printed pendant! We are looking forward to your own designed accessories.
We see a lot of designs here at the Zazzy HQ. To date, the community has made over 500,000 different designs! This is great, not just because we love giving people the opportunity to create products, but also because we learn a lot from all of these designs and we can improve with all that input!
In the near future, we will launch some new features that make your designs even more 3D, but we already launched a feature that will make many of your designs better. Today we are discussing; the embossed / engraved feature, it is a bit hidden at the bottom of the editor, but really powerful!
To show the power of emboss I would like to first showcase some products that customers shared with us and that have been made with the emboss feature!
Designs by Laura Taylor, Rianne Westgeest
There are 2 things that make this feature so powerful, first of all loose parts will not fall out of the product because there is a base structure (based on the outline of your designs). And maybe even more important, you can keep a lot of detail because the minimum thickness requirements are lower for embossed or engraved details. The only downside? You might use more material, so your design might end up a little bit more expensive.
Because we love it so much, a few more images;)
Hit the editor and let us know if you liked it! You can find the embossed feature under “fill method” on the bottom of the sketch editor.
Sometimes we have to look back in order to be inspired. We went through the culture of the Incas, Mayans and the Aztecs to reveal you the beauty of these civilizations and if you have a few min to read, you just might get the inspiration you were looking for!
The Inca
The Incas were amazing in so many different ways. They built over 3000 km of road, had a great understanding of mathematics and also knew a lot about architecture. They had a strong emphasis on clean lines, trapezoid shapes and their designs in art often used geometrical shapes.
Inca art is best noticed in polished metal work, either in gold or ceramics and textiles. They considered gold to be the sweat of the sun and silver to be the tears of the moon. Everybody was wearing jewelry. Ring, necklaces and bracelets were the most frequent and a fun fact is that the use of jewelry was actually encouraged by the Incas!
We think they would make great use of 3D printing nowadays!
Archaeologists discovered these gold and silver ear ornaments, nestled in a site 175 miles north of Lima,Peru.
The Maya
The Maya believed deeply in the cyclical nature of life and that nothing was ‘born’ and nothing ‘died’ and this belief inspired them to create art that would transcend many centuries. Mayan culture is known, among other things, for complex tattoos and..wait for it...you guessed it -jewelry!
They were fond of different forms of jewelry and the two most common materials were jade and gold. Being advanced in metal working allowed them create amazing jewelry, ornaments and accessories. Take a peek into their history and you might just find a fountain of inspiration!
The Aztecs
People part of the empire had a strong connection with the surrounding environment. For centuries Aztec jewelry has fascinated anyone who had the chance to see it. Jewelry was common for the high class, especially leg bracelets, necklaces and earrings. They used a variety of materials, from copper, gold, silver to rocks such as obsidian. One of their favorite precious stones was turquoise and was mostly used in religious rites.
Where do you get your inspiration from? Let us know!
Showcasing your brand, designing something for sale or just making something for a local group or community are some of the reasons why people are creating custom tees. But there is so much more that is accessible to share with your audience.
Everyone wears T-shirts. Everyone loves T-shirts! It’s is probably why they are so commonplace in the world of promotional merchandising. But that’s the problem. Everyone has them and everyone is giving them away. To be unique and stand out from the crowd you need something else! Custom-made accessories are just as easy to make and order. They are new and exciting. And best of all, you can make them unique to your user and your brand!
What Else is Out There?
With custom on-demand 3D printing the limits are endless to what you can create for your audience. You can turn your ideas and designs into saleable, wearable, 3D printed pieces that your fans, customers and community will love.
As easy you can design a T-Shirt you can make necklaces, pendants, keychains, rings, bracelets, phone-cases, keycaps and more!
And 3D printing is not limited to plastics; you can make products in Silver, Steel, Gold & more!
The design process is similar to what you may be familiar with when ordering your custom T-Shirts. There is an easy-to-use design widget that allows you to choose the object you would like to design. Within a couple of minutes you can create accessories, jewelry and other small merchandise without any hassle.
Here is What Others have Said:
Why Does On-Demand Matter?
When you’re a shop owner, holding inventory can be expensive. Not only that, managing the supply chain can be a huge time sink and not to mention costly! When ordering 3D printed accessories the items are only produced once they are ordered. This means you have no carrying costs. This also means production, assembly, shipment and customer service are all taken care of for you! All you need to do is design, place the order and sell your product!
Why are Accessories Better?
How many T-shirts do you own? Where do you keep them? I bet the answer is a lot and probably someplace in a drawer or a closet. Now think about how often you wear them. With so many shirt options, how often do they get in the rotation!
Now think about the jewelry you own. Where is it and how often do you wear it? I am guessing if it is not being worn it is stored in a nice box on top of your dresser. Jewelry is taken care of! It can also be worn more often without people thinking you do not wash your laundry!
But it’s not just jewelry! It is keychains, figurines, keycaps, phone cases and more. These are durable goods that are less disposable than a cotton tee!
Be Different!
Stand out from the crowd and offer something new to your followers! With 3D printing it’s easy and accessible for anyone to design, sell and share custom made accessories!

We got some fresh news from our Amsterdam office! We are working hard to bring more materials on our platform so designers can have more fun and experiment the amazing world of 3d printing!
We present to you Metallic Plastic aka Alumide. The material consists of Nylon and Aluminium dust and the process used in manufacturing this is SLS (selective laser sintering) - which means it’s being printed layer by layer by a kickass laser that draws in the powder, melting and bonding in order to form a thin layer of the model!
It results in a nicely metallic appearance with a “sandy” surface and it’s strong and flexible. This material is great for beginners especially who are looking for a good price and not lose too much quality on the way.
We’re planning on bringing new materials asap, so stay tuned and till then, enjoy designing!
Here are some funky keychains made from alumide by Youtube channel Typhoon Cinema. You can find them on Zazzy.
Choosing the right product is a messy job as there are way too many options, but it’s now easier as you have identified possible niches. Picking your niche and going for it can be scary as you are pushing a lot of people away. However, it also means that you are setting up a campaign for a small, but passionate group.
In case you missed last week post on picking a niche, take a quick look here.
Where do I begin?
The first thing you have to do is to identify to what elements the niche you picked connects to, so you can make a list of possible products. Let’s say it’s a common goal or a problem. You either try to offer a solution or a way to enhance their goal. Nobody is saying to invent new products but just think of what they are missing or bring them new ways that would allow them to express their goal or problem.
After this, determine the marketability of the product. You already spent time on chunks of data determining the niche you are going to operate in is interesting, the best thing to do is to actually talk to the people that you assume you would be selling your product. Make sure it’s not in a sale context so you can obtain the information you are looking for.
What’s a good product?
A quick checklist
Specific – Let’s say your niche consists of elephant lovers,15-40 age and have an interest in wildlife. Selling products like “Necklaces” or even “Gold Necklaces” is too broad. You want to find one specific item such as “Gold Pendant Elephant Necklace”.
Price range between $10-150 – This price range is just perfect as you have higher chances for the customer to make an impulsive purchase – without too much thought into the purchasing process. Let’s say there are more chances for an emotional purchase. Furthermore, any markets that do have volume under $10 are usually big players running on low margin, so that’s a no-no.
Small and easy to be shipped – Avoid fragile items that require perfect shipping. And if they are big it will increase shipping costs and it will cut down your profit margin.
Avoid products that are trademarked. Trademark issues can give you a proper headache and it won’t get you too far.
Where do I go from here?
This is a marathon, not a sprint - yes cheesy, but hey progress is a series of small steps where the main goal is not to stop. We recommend this amazingly good reading so you have all the information you need to make a good start:
A Better Lemonade Stand is an online ecommerce incubator which provides insight into the problems of this industry. Start with this reading and I am sure you will love them in no time.
Oh the agony of picking the right niche and products...absolute terror isn’t it?Well it doesn’t have to be that way! Here are some tips and tools that can help you to find your audience!
Part 1/3
Alright let’s get this going! It sounds cheesy but we’ve all been staring blankly at the monitor, feeling overwhelmed and with a question on our mind “Where the hell do I even start?”Hmm...let’s start this differently, with what you shouldn’t start!
Focusing on products first is considered to be a newbie mistake that many marketers make – there are high chances that your product will become uncompetitive or find itself obsolete in no time! However these issues can be dodged if you go for the right niche from the start.
Let’s quickly dip into understanding what a niche is – a segment of a market. To simply put it, a niche market is comprised of a group of people with a common denominator such as a problem, goal or passion.
Ok! How do I start tho?
A fun thing to do is to write down what you do and love. This will instantly generate a number of possible niches, it’s going to be broad topics at first so you’ll have to go deeper into each one and break it down in little segments. You can get inspiration from your actions, how do you act in those niches, and what do you buy to fulfill your needs and so on.You will also find it easy to do this as you have a keen interest in and already a good understanding!
Make sure your niche isn’t too ‘niche’–some niches are way too small and growth is just...not there, not at the moment at least. In order to check this you can use Google Keyword Planner (free) and you should have an estimate of how many people are searching for your niche, making it a solid indicator if you really want to purse this or not. *** We’ve been listening to the designers that use Zazzy and some of them are using the same strategy to see if it’s worth it to chase a certain niche segment!
Another cool thing to do after you get some experience is to predict trends, jump on them ,cash out and start fresh! We got this subject covered in this blog post.(3 min read).
Where do I go from here?
We recommend these two podcasts to get more insight into the struggles and fun of finding the right niche.

It’s that time of the year again! For the men, to grow a beard and look fabulous! And for the women, to wear as many bearded accessories as possible! Movember!
Movember. Origins.
It’s important to know how it all started and what Movember actually stands for. It isn’t just about the beards and mustaches. It’s about the importance of men’s health and raising awareness.
This is where the Movember Foundation, a global charity focused on men leading healthier and happier lives. Since its formation in 2003, the Movember Foundation has raised more than $650 million. These funds have been delivered to more than 1,000 programs across the world to help provide services related to prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health, and physical activity.
Theme
The special theme of this year’s Movember is MOVE, referring to the importance of exercise for a healthy lifestyle. However, there is also the on-going theme of funky beards and well-groomed mustaches.
Want to contribute to this awesome movement and to men’s health? Read on!
Our challenge
1. Design on Zazzy an accessory of your choice (or more!!) in line with this year’s theme (and, of course, beards and mustaches).
2. Reach as many people as you can! Post your design all over social media to get a lot of supporters, using #zazzymovember.
3. At the end of your campaign, we will donate the money you raised to the Movember Foundation.
BONUS
The awesome Dezigner with the most successful Movember campaign (i.e. raises the most money) will get featured on our website and social media. In addition to this, we will promote on all our channels his/her next design. This will give a lot of exposure and audience reach, generating increased profit!
Important: In the description of your campaign on Zazzy, please write ‘For Movember’, so it’s clear to us that you want the proceeds from your campaign to be donated to charity. Otherwise, we will not donate. So you can launch as many campaigns as you want, we will consider donations only if you specifically write ‘For Movember’.
How is Zazzy contributing?
We are donating 100% of our own profits from this campaign to charity (i.e. the Movember Foundation).

NEW FEATURE; ICONIC COLLABORATION WITH THE NOUN PROJECT
In a hurry to design? Got a great idea, but not so hot on the drawing skills? Want to spend the rest of the week in a haze creating witty, punny and downright awesome accessories? Well, you might want to sit down for this (and make a coffee, clear your schedule and shoo the cat off the laptop). We’ve just unleashed a powerful new feature that allows you scroll through The Noun Project’s 100,000+ cute and concise icons and it’s going to change the way you design on the platform completely.
Above Noun Project icons from; R-L, John T. Garcia, Callum Taylor, Christopher Reyes, shimaru, Vicons Design, Edward Boatman, Martin Vanco, Roberto Chiaveri, Michael Bundscherer, Rieko Medendorp, National Park Service Collection, AIGA Collection, Arthur Shlain, Okan Benn, Edward Boatman.
Oh, hells yeah!
The Noun Project, for those who don’t know, turned the staid and sleepy world of visual language on its head a few years ago. Creating a one-stop-shop for everything you could need for spelling out your message without pesky words, their enormous bank of vectors is set to become your new favourite playground on our platform.
To use them, simply head over to the Sketch Editor and hit the big ol’ Choose From Gallery button. From there you can type in your word of choice and see each associated vector and as a pendant, keychain, ring, or cufflink. Simple as that.
Five minute marketer: When to post on social media?
You definitely know by now that posting on social media is the best way of getting your brand widespread recognition and amplifying the reach of the cool campaigns you are creating. Simple, right? Well, not really, because you still have to consider WHEN it would be a good time to post and tweet to reach as many people as you can.
You have great content and cool campaigns. Now it’s time to learn when to post and reach your target audience.
1. Facebook
For Facebook, a rule of thumb is to generally post on Thursday and Friday, when people are more in a ‘weekend mood’. The less people want to be at work, the more they are on Facebook. However, make sure to avoid lunchtime (between 12 and 2 PM). There is a post overload then, so try and avoid this interval and post when there is less competition in the News Feed to make sure your post gets seen.
Generally, try to avoid posting after hours and on weekends, as engagement rates fall for these periods.
2. Twitter
With Twitter, there’s a catch. If you want your tweets heard by other businesses or brands, then it’s best to post during the workweek. Otherwise, if you’re only addressing consumers, weekends seem to be the best option.
As for the actual time, you should try posting between 1 and 3 PM during the workweek (as you are mainly posting for other businesses it’s best to catch them around lunchtime) and at noon or around 5-6 PM during the weekends.
3. Instagram
Instagram is an app that stays consistent throughout the week as there aren’t any serious drops in engagement rates. That means that you can basically post any day at your leisure. However, it would be better if you could post off work hours, as there seems to be more interaction after 5 PM.
Final Tips&Tricks
Visualize it
Photos on Facebook usually generate higher engagement from audiences, with 53% more likes and 103% more comments than an equivalent post without an image. The same goes for Twitter, images generating 36% more clicks and 41% more retweets.
Location, Location,Location
When posting on social media, you need to pay attention to the time zone where most of your audience is located. If you’re posting from Europe, but addressing you followers in the United States, it would be a good idea to schedule your posts according to their time zone and not yours.
Know your audience
Try and adapt your social media strategies to YOUR audience. A good place to start would be to take the time and see how your audience reacts to your posts: when do you get the most clicks and shares? When is your audience the most active? See which days and times are best for your target audience and work with that.
Tweeriod is a good tool that lets you find the best time to send out tweets and when your followers are usually online. For Instagram, you could use Iconosquare, which gives you a good overview of your stats and your content engagement. With Iconosquare, you can see your current posting habits versus community interaction, plotting for you the best times to post.
Here is a quick infographic with the most important take-aways from this post.
So, you’ve outgrown the three fonts that our Text Editor provides or you want a little more creative freedom? Awesomo! Merch’ with words is eternally popular and a great way of adding another layer of personalization to your designs. In fact, according to Craftcount, Etsy’s top jewelry seller creates text-based jewelry almost exclusively. So, let’s take a look at how to create some wordy pieces using the Sketch Editor.
1. Open your paint program. We like Gimp (because it’s slick and free), but you don’t need Photoshop-levels of features for this. Any art program will work, providing you can upload fonts.
2. Choose your font and type your word; as it’s almost Halloween, we’re going to use the word “BOO” and the Universal Serif font. Its chunkiness will rule out the risk of unprintably thin lines.
3. After typing your word of choice into the paint program you’re using, find out how to adjust the kerning (the space between each letter) and reduce it until all the letters are touching each other.
4. Download as a jpg or png and upload via the Sketch Editor.
Ta-da! A spooky keychain and pendant.

Five Minute Marketer: Predict the Trends That Will Sell
In this blog post, you will learn how to predict a trend before it’s reached mass levels with a simple and free tool.
Your first step to understanding trends is to research what your ideal audience is interested in, speaking about and searching for. We highly recommend Google Trends for exactly this. Google’s search data offers incredible insights into everything from general public opinion to niche interests. As a dezigner, you can use this data to your advantage by predicting the trends and acting on them quickly.
Google Trends offers an overview of what is going on in the world and allows you to zoom in on your area of interest. Here’s how to use it to boost your sales.
Check popularity and compare
Here is an overview of the popularity of the word ‘selfie’. You can see that it spiked in 2014, but in 2015 it started going down. According to this graph, it probably wouldn’t be a good idea to focus all your products or campaigns on the ‘selfie’ trend; it’s most likely a saturated market already, and fewer and fewer people are searching for it.
A useful option offered by Google Trends is the possibility to compare up to 5 terms. As an example, I compared the search terms: selfie and cats. Overall, it seems that ‘cats’ remains unfailingly popular (no surprise there!), with no major ups and down. So using ‘cats’ seems like a better bet than selfies; though the market is already quite catered to, interest remains high.
A trend that seems to be on the rise worldwide is Taylor Swift. The chart is showing rising figures for 2015, a lot more than in previous years. So you might want to consider introducing Taylor Swift-related elements in your brand or campaigns.
Filter, filter, filter!
Google Trends allows you to filter the terms you search to match your audience. So maybe your are only interested in the trends of your followers in the UK or maybe just in your home country in a certain period of time or season.
Search terms can be filtered by region, by time, by industry and by Web search (such as images, video etc.). The industry filter is particularly powerful because it allows you to zoom in and see what is going on specifically in your domain.
Predict trends
Another cool use for Google Trends is the prediction possibilities that it offers. You can predict, up to a point, what will become popular and adjust your campaigns and products accordingly. A quick example, as can be seen in the image below, is offered by the popular TV show ‘The Walking Dead’.
You can see that the interest is starting to go up now in September and using the Forecast option offered by Google, it is predicted that interest will pick up even more in the months to come (as shown by the dotted line).
Guidance only
Let the trends that you find in this tool guide your ideas and brand, not decide for you what to do. You know your audience best and what they would love, so there is not point radically changing your brand. However, checking Trends and seeing what is popular will help you stay ahead in the game.
As an example, let’s look at some fashion trends, comparing 90s fashion with 20s fashion. As the chart below shows, the interest in 90s fashion is definitely on the rise especially in 2015, with a lot more searches than 20s fashion. So, it would be a good idea to check out some fashion examples from the 90s and let them inspire your designs!
Case Study
An informative example of how search data is being used by even the major players comes from beauty industry leader L’Oreal. Predicting online trends and measuring what was being searched helped them develop and launch their popular Ombre kit. Read more here.
