🎶 I'm gonna get ready for the rain to pour heavy. Let it fall 🎶 Walking over to the gym in the freezing rain for my mandatory Sunday workout. If you see my mom, don't tell her. 🎶All my life I've been living in the fast lane. Can't slow down. I'm a rollin' freight train. One more time gotta start all over. Can't stop now. I'm a lone red rover.🎶 Best workout jam and current theme song: Imagine Dragons - Polaroid #NoLazySundays (at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill)

If you watch one movie this year, make it The Imitation Game. The beauty of different minds is one to be celebrated to its core. The world would be dull and most certainly doomed without thinkers who bring things to the table that we can't in amazing ways we never imagined. #TheImitationGame #Thinkers #Doers #NormalisOverrated
An early Sunday morning back in the US got me thinking about the things I'd love to finish in 2014 💗 I've found there are one too many things in life we seek to make sense of, but can't. Fortunately for my deciphering pleasure, there's research with so many stones left unturned. And of all things we can chase in life (aside from happiness), I've found them to be most worthwhile 😊 #FinishWhatYouStart #Love #HarderBetterFasterStronger #ResearchYear
Wisdom passed on by my outgoing ENT chief! #NailedIt #GoBigorGoHome
The Last Lecture by Randy Pausch was one of my favorite books and this quote has stuck with me for years since I first read it. Personally, I feel brick wall can be the best thing that could ever happen to us pushing us to our absolute limits and then redefining them as we push through, only to realize that we can #DoMore. #HarderBetterFasterStronger #RandyPausch #WordyWednesday
On compassion
“I have no idea what's awaiting me, or what will happen when this all ends. For the moment I know this: there are sick people and they need curing.” - Albert Camus, The Plague Last week as I was nearing my halfway point for this year out from medical school, I found myself in the right place at the right time listening to the right person saying the right thing. If you know me, you know I consider almost all situations I ever end up in to be serendipitous in some way or form – everything is part of a grand plan - but this was even beyond that. I had the pleasure of hearing the greatest stories ever told. An incredible surgeon was being recognized for his humanitarian efforts at the conference I was attending. He shared a scenario from the perspective of an ENT – the story of a child who had developed the ability to speak, and then stopped talking when he was a toddler. The boy was worked up and was found to have adrenoleukodystrophy. “In retrospect, I don’t know why I did, seeing as the condition was incurable, but I made house calls for this child and his family.” The parents were extremely engaged and their concern drew him towards wanting to care as much as he could for the child. As he continued these house calls over a period of time, the visits grew longer and longer. The boy’s father, who was an Italian banker, would spend a lot of time explaining to the surgeon about his quest to cure his son’s condition showing him a series of chemical equations he had been working on. The surgeon then changed the slide on his powerpoint presentation which had a picture of his patient and a press release – the boy’s name was Lorenzo and the press release was about a therapy the parents tirelessly rallied the medical research community to bring into existence. He wrapped up his talk discussing current concerns physicians have about payments. “I can’t believe I have the honor of getting up every morning and taking care of people who need me. People want to talk about pay cuts in medicine, but I can’t believe I get paid to do this. I take care of people who are grateful and thank me every single time at the end of each visit. What an honor. I can’t believe I get paid for this.” There were multiple heroes in the stories he told, but there was one overarching theme – that of compassion conquering all. One nervous step, one daring move at a time, we launch ourselves in to what we think is meant to be our role in the universe’s overall plan. Doubts, questions, uncertainty. Somewhere in the distance, there’s a lighthouse of destiny covered in fog that we move towards, ships sailing in the night with hearts brimming with compassion and determination. “But how will I know it's my destiny?' 'Like love, it will possess you. You can't help but know.” - Gail Tsukiyama. And I think to myself, here’s to endless compassion, and to the awaiting destiny, and to the constant fight against the unknown. It never ends, and maybe it shouldn’t. I don’t think we could ever do enough. #DoMore

When in Rome - Going hard at work and vacation
Day 60. Location - JFK Airport en route to Rome!
Wowowow. An impending feeling of doom - that phrase has a whole new meaning to me. That’s how I felt trying to get my anatomy project (at least the lab part - still a few more days for the abstract which is also mostly done) completed by last night in time for me to leave for vacation. Raising my actual flap looked pretty easy when my mentor did one and showed it to us. They took much, much longer for me. Plus, we had meant to record his dissection which didn’t quite save so I had nothing for reference. Anyway, stayed extra late in the lab on Thursday night by myself. Hilariously enough, I was more creeped out by having to walk to my car at that hour than being in a lab alone with a bunch of heads. Cranked up my bollywood on Pandora and went for it. Got in at 6 am on Friday to finish my work. Still took all day, but one of my sweet residents figured out a better technique and showed me making the whole day much better than Thursday! I had thought Id be in lab until Friday night but got done by 5! On a side note, I absolutely adore the visiting scholar from Colombia who is working in our anatomy lab between med school and residency. She’s incredible with her dissections, the sweetest person ever, and easily my soul sister! Helped me immensely with this project. Anatomy lab is gonna be a blast with her this year! Love our short brown girl, (hopeful) future surgeon demographic!
Anyway back to the impending feeling of doom. I was so so terrified I wouldn’t get my dissections done on time. I kept thinking how I’d totally cancel vacation if it wasn’t already paid for by my sister who was super excited for it. Didn’t want to kill vacation for her, but also didn’t want to not pull through with work. I almost wanted to cry, but then I remembered I’m in CH for one main reason - to go hard. And that’s what I did. If times like this break me, I’m probably not cut out for the life I am trying to sign myself up for. Anyway, all’s well that ends well! When I get back, I’m going to spend some time in the lab practicing using the scope and just orienting myself a little better for the next project I pick up! Anyway got some bubble tea yesterday to celebrate (of course), SHOWERED which felt amazing after spending so much time in lab, and finally packed.
Had some knots in my back from being hunched over in lab working away but hopped on a massage chair at the airport here and I’m feeling much better! Getting ready to board for Rome in a few minutes! Aaaaah so excited!
