Are you as enthusiastic about demonstrating recent versions of OS X as you were about Leopard? Have you avoided family members who keep asking you why their iPhones don’t have enough free space to install iOS 8? Do you think it might be better if your friends stick with Android because then you won’t feel responsible if some of their data doesn’t sync? I think a lot of us have lost our spirit, and that’s a problem for Apple. Apple may not think so—its financial statements would argue that it’s in great shape—but it’s being buoyed by an excellent run of hardware releases and a certain amount of inertia. Eventually, though, it runs the risk of becoming another Microsoft, with users who do more complaining than praising. When a company’s best users lose their spirit, it loses their leverage.

Emphasis mine. This whole article speaks to me. I’ve noticed that especially over the last year I’ve become disillusioned by various Apple missteps.
A few years ago, I would have never considered anything but an Apple computer; however, in 2014 I jumped into Chrome OS waters and loved it! Instead of talking about how awesome Apple is to family and friends, I’ve switched to talking about the merits of Chrome OS. For the technology-shy, it provides so much functionality without the complexity of the traditional operating systems. For a developer like me, I can enable the developer mode and install Linux to run in a Chrome tab. Interestingly, I haven’t used Linux much other than to manage a MySQL database remotely and to play World of Warcraft with Wine. Chrome OS really does handle 95% of my daily computer needs. Chrome OS + Crouton handles 99%. The other 1% is waiting for a Chromebook with a nicer display and backlit keyboard.
Chrome OS alone has accelerated my abandonment of Apple-only technology:
I’ve sold off nearly all of my Apple TVs (I only have 1 where I used to have 5). They’ve all been replaced with Roku and Fire TV boxes.
iTunes has been demoted to an app that I only use when I have to, and every time I’m forced to use it, it ends in aggravation. Plex, Amazon Prime Music, and Google’s free Play Music service have replaced all of its non-iOS-related functionality.
I was already using Gmail for email, but I’ve since moved to using Chrome and Inbox on iOS rather than Safari and Mail.
I’ve found alternatives to using iPhoto: Amazon Prime Photos and Google Drive work really nicely for my personal backups. Google+ Photos’ Auto Awesome feature is one of my favorite things ever!
I’m apathetic towards iCloud Drive, something that I was pining for a few years back when Dropbox was the main Cloud storage player. Google Drive is my go-to back up solution with a select few items stored in Dropbox.
I rarely use my iPad any more. Between the more capable Chromebook, Kindle Paperwhite, and iPhone, I don’t need it. I have eyed more than one Android device to replace my iPhone next year when my contract expires. I’ve never had more problems with an iPhone than I have with iOS 8.
Airplay has become such an annoying, buggy technology that I’d rather rely on Bluetooth to listen to music, which is mostly what I used Airplay for. I’m more interested now in what Google does with Chromecast and the forthcoming Chromecast audio.
Desktop Linux has come a long way. I now have more machines at home running Linux than OS X.
It’s not all bad… I still love developing on my Mac, there are several iOS apps I love, iMessage is irreplaceable. Still, I worry about the future of the company that I’ve loved since my college days over 12 years ago. I’ve lost my spirit for Apple and it frankly makes me sad.
Testing out my new #selfie stick. Should be fun next year for the #cycling pics
Those who wish to eat real food as a matter of course are made to feel like snobs and, given the centrality of food to social interactions, oftentimes outcasts among their own kin.

This is the first year that Apple’s flagship iOS devices are available in sizes that will often result in poor user experiences. Not long ago, we could just tell our friends and family to buy “an iPhone” or “an iPad”, unqualified. They were all great. Now, if our parents call us and say, “We just got an iPad!”, we need to think, Oh no, which one did they get? Please don’t be one of the [bleep] ones…

I think it’s telling that all of the Apple apologists/bloggers I follow are saying the same thing. This isn’t a good move for Apple.
This seems like a gimmick, a trick to let Apple tout a low entry-level price and then drive everyone to buy the midrange device.
http://www.macworld.com/article/2834761/low-end-theory-apple-could-do-better-to-price-its-products-more-evenly.html This article says everything that I hate about Apple lately. All of the cheap, base options are gimmicks. Buy the mid-tier or regret it later.
Can't wait for next week!
