I actually do think it’s quite interesting how Torchwood subverts expectations by having Ianto make the first move on Jack instead of the other, more typical, way round.

I mean sure there’s sexual tension and obvious flirting shown in the first episode with the ‘and he looks good in a suit’ exchange but their actual relationship begins with Ianto just flat-out asking Jack to kiss him. And of course if you don’t know the extended media, Ianto still initiates with the whole stopwatch innuendo.

I think a wider conversation can be had around how queer men in media are so often unnecessarily categorised in their role in the relationship, often as ‘the man’ or ‘the woman’ and I don’t wanna make out Torchwood to be this revolutionary piece of queer art that completely challenges the norms and stereotypes present cuz it’s not. I just think it’s neat that the more traditionally quiet and I suppose feminine (in comparison) character starts their sexual relationship rather than the macho sort of muscular tough guy that you’d expect.
