CAN THIS LOVE BE TRANSLATED? μ΄ μ¬λ ν΅μ λλμ? Episode 11
You know, Mr. Joo Hojin, I heard a story somewhere, about a woman who patiently taught her boyfriend, who was dreadful with chopsticks, how to use them properly. Then she told him, "If we ever break up, every time you use a pair of chopsticks, you will think of me." And she was right. That's some scary and effective brainwashing. We are seeing the aurora now because I wished for it. So from now on, Mr. Joo, every time you see an aurora, you will think of me.

DOONA! μ΄λλ! β 2023, dir. Lee Jeong Hyo
Is that why... I feel this way?
DOONA! (2023) Dir. Lee Jeong-hyo
You're the one that came and shook me up out of nowhere, but now, I'm the one who wants you to be mine so much it's driving me crazy.
DOONA! (2023) Dir. Lee Jeong-hyo
Without you, time seems to drag on. Without you, comic books aren't fun. Without you, the playground is quiet, too. Without you, every day feels bland. It's like eating unseasoned soup or dumplings without soy sauce. Without you, it's like not drinking banana milk after going to the bathhouse. So I was wondering... do you wanna go drink banana milk with me?
LOVE NEXT DOOR (2024)
Go on ahead. I'll definitely be behind you this time, so you don't have to look back.

it must be so hard to be seokryu.
to have always been told that her story must include success or it means nothing: that vulnerability is a weapon that will always be wielded against her. to have been taught that love is earned and not freely given.
this is why she pushes seunghyo away after her first instance of rejection β because she feels as though she needs to "deserve" his love. that she has to be good enough to receive it without guilt. but what does worth have to do with living and loving?
seunghyo doesn't love seokryu because she's smart or because she always succeeds. he says it himself: he loves her because she's seokryu. it's true that nobody can live off of love β but nobody can breathe properly without it belonging in your body, either. without it life becomes tasteless β rich color turns into regret. do you truly measure a life by its metre of success β or by the sanctity of your personal bonds? what will you remember in the final dark β the dearness of someone's face; or the degrees that you won?
to be seokryu is to swallow your own want like spilled blood because you think no one will ask for the scarred silence of its searing. but seunghyo does. and he always will.
i also adored the conversation between dongjin and seokryu. it reminded me of these lines by naomi shihab nye: "i missed him terribly, / though i could hear his even breath β and we had such long and separate lives ahead."
siblings can often be so estranged from one another β caught in the complex schematics of family suffering. but sometimes they can get through to you in a way nobody else can β see you in a manner nobody else ever will.
this episode was about personal connections: what it means to have them with the pressures of an ordinary life.
Love Next DoorΒ μλ§μΉκ΅¬μλ€ (2024) Episode 11 Belated | Confession
there's a translated scrap of plato that eventually found its way into a letter sent by emily dickinson: "i wish you a kinder sea."
seascape scenes in k-dramas can often be so trite β but love next door's characterization was beautiful. seunghyo pitching seokryu into the water might seem like an act of anger β but it's actually liberation. it's a rebirth; a re-emergence β a place of salt that can settle her tears. water is renewal: a washing place for wounds. a tincture to clear away the bitter and broken; and allow the touch of tenderness.
though seokryu is scared of water; in the sea she is safe: the waves hold the weight of her hurt and desperation as she screams at seungyo. he knows what she needs β he has always known what she needs. he stands still β takes the tips of her fingers striking him as what it is β finally, a surrender to all the emotions she refused to succumb to. a clearing of the air. an opening into a freer intimacy.
there were so many beautiful moments during this episode: the power of a simple "we'll hit rock bottom together." seokryu's ex was heartbreakingly right β what she needed wasn't someone to lift her up, but someone to fall down with her. when someone is in pain you sit with them in the dark; and look up at the impossibility of light together.
this is what seungyo has always understood so effortlessly about seokryu β that this is love: to climb down into the ravine of regret and raw hurt where the person you love has fallen β not to pull them out; but give them company. when people are in agony you must give them the dignity of their deep hurt β you must nurture the narrow, serrated edges of their sorrow. seunghyo taking seokryu to see off her ex β folding his coat around her to create a private hollow to express her heartache: it speaks of a man who understands that grief is not meant to be overcome; but gathered in the hands and given respect. attention. understanding.
this is love: to say "when you cry, it is my eyes that fill with salt. when you scream, it is my throat that burns. when you fall down, it is my knees that bruise in the color of your eyes."
this is love: to wish someone a kinder sea. a clearer day. a warmer hug.
this is seunghyo.
Beautiful piece of writing. π«ΆπΌβ€οΈ #LoveNextDoor #SeungRyu #SeokRyu #Choisseung
there's this line by richard siken that i can't help but think of whenever i witness seunghyo's feelings for seokryu: "sometimes you get so close to someone you end up on the other side of them."
it's so true. seunghyo is the loneliest cartographer of care in the world β mapping the memories built between him and seokryu. analyzing every look, every word, every touch. labeling the continents of distance between the two of them with his longing β studying the seas of silence stretching them past friendship and into something infinitely more fragile.
bae seokryu; his best friend. his worst wish.
someone whose breaths he has counted like coins from a foreign land β someone whose every move has been canvassed in his dreams. someone who is still so fundamentally out of reach, so unknowable β someone who has been hiding a secret so huge that it swallows him whole.
this episode truly broke me. the ache in seunghyo's eyes as he watches seokryu pull away from him β the helpless haunting he makes of his face when he finds seokryu in his bed. the pure sincerity of his smile as he watches seokryu light up as she eats.
there is wearing your heart on your sleeve β and then there is seunghyo: letting love wear you as decoration.

If it's the Girls' Generation, I believe I can speak, that I am allowed to speak, and that I must speak about them in this manner.
When you begin listening to the intro of (their) debut song <Into The New World>, it feels as if you are falling into the magic, and when you continue listening to the bridge part that is ending, it feels as if the magic of the entire song has been completed.
This song is about solace, harmony, rebirth, and, most importantly, faith.
That faith, is the faith in being able to love them indefinitely.
The faith that they can continue to showcase good music and performances through one label, despite the fact that their managements have changed.
The faith that they are not a one-time shooting star, but rather a constellation that will live on in the night sky forever.
It is obvious that SM Entertainment has thrown an important lesson into the entertainment industry with 'The Art of Mathematics,' and that their great stream is still flowing in one direction.
This project will undoubtedly serve as an inspiration to all producers and idol members. Recognizing that we are the strongest and most beautiful when we are together, that we can shine brightly together again when the snow that has accumulated in each other's hearts melts and we become one. The constellation of their own reappears in the night sky, allowing countless fans who were looking to the constellation for assurance of their life path to stand up again.
Everyone at SM who made all of these projects possible, composer Kenzie, no, everyone who helped shape Girls' Generation into what they areΒ today, all the members who protect each other in this harsh entertainment industry, and SONE who will perpetually support all of the girls. You are all truly amazing.
I once told a certain member (of Girls' Generation) at a dinner event in 2017 that I wished Girls' Generation would continue forever. I am overjoyed that my 'wish' came true.
'Forever 1'
May all those who created the unprecedented project in the history of the entertainment industry last forever.
