found this old reddit comment about kataang, specifically in the awakening, and i think it really sums up why katara is so attached to him not just in this episode but throughout the series

not only is aang the first guy she meets in her age range that’s not her brother, but he’s a genuine breath of fresh air for a girl that had to grow up too fast in a patriarchal society.

he builds her up from day 1, tells her finding a master would be so easy when she never even thought of leaving home before, encourages her to take risks she’s been discouraged from, is always down to go along with her plans, validates her as a waterbender and eventually his master, is the first boy to tell her that she’s beautiful, compliments her, is fiercely protective of her, goes out of his way to get her mother’s necklace back, makes her gifts, apologizes when he hurts her, comforts her when she needs reassurance without her having to say anything, comes back for her when she’s expecting him to and even when she’s not, and just all these things without any kind of agenda or hidden motive on his part.

like he’s genuinely her friend first and their friendship isn’t marked with misogynistic or ignorant comments that she has to put up with or forgive. which just must be so refreshing for a girl that’s had to grow up hearing the type of comments her brother and possibly other men in the tribe were spewing from the beginning of the series.

so i just wanted to share this comment because it reminded me of why i like aang and kataang so much for katara and how refreshing it is to watch a fmc be adored and supported so consistently by the mmc without the degradation and malice that most writers think female characters need to endure and forgive in het relationships for the sake of “realism”
