“Typically satellites are tested inside purpose-built reverberant chambers, such as ESTEC’s own Large European Acoustic Facility sometimes described as the largest and most powerful sound system in Europe,” explains ESA test facility expert Steffen Scharfenberg, overseeing the test campaign together with ESA mechanical engineer Ivan Ngan. As a result of Cage’s works with chance operations, “non-intention” or “non-doing” became artistically en vogue in the sixties, but with MUSIC FOR SOLO PERFORMER, Lucier succeeded in making them essential conditions of the performance. They even became visible in the image of the non-acting performer."
