MAKE ME CHOOSE MEME ↳ Bonnie Bennett or Davina Claire? (anon)
I feel like I’ve started to create my own culture of being a voice for something, and that’s what people want to know about. I love that because I am a woman and because I rap, and I look the way I look, I can connect with the demographic of people who feel like they have a voice in me.
I know your way is to invest a captain with unquestioned authority while in battle, but this battle is ours as much as yours. My word and your word will govern in concert or not at all. And when I’m not present, that word shall be given by my daughter.

I, personally, am extremely grateful, ‘cause, as a woman, especially a woman of color, it’s funny how Hollywood wants to put you in a box. And the box is labeled ‘maid’, or ‘pregnant’, or ‘just a girlfriend’’ or ‘a slut’. And it’s so demeaning and degrading because… women are so much more than that. And it’s not even like: ‘oh, women are stronger these days’. No, women have always been strong! Women have always been complex, women have always been capable and able, and amazing at this thing- at life. It’s just now Hollywood’s finally catching up to the norm and waking up. It’s important to portray that representation for women in the world in the mass media. We need to see examples of empowerment, because when we see that, it no longer seems abnormal, but it seems like that’s the norm. That’s the message we need to send.

“You know, in Kenya, these shows were our only frame of reference for black Americans. When I got here, I was terrified. Terrified of black people, or that you’d be seen as one? Both. This country is mind fuck”.
