one thing I noticed that truly shows the difference between camp Cretaceous and chaos theory is how much fucking

plot armor the kids have in camp Cretaceous.

Sammy ALSO got impaled in the abdomen by a dinosaur, and a poisonous one at that, but barely anything happened. Not even half an episode of her struggling to stay alive, and all that happened was that she got a little sick and revived that same episode.

When Ben feel from the monorail, we see him being unconscious for a bit and then being absolutely fine, no lingering effects for the fall.

if anything, the worst any of the campers got injured was Yaz spraining her ankle and having a limp for most of the series, but even that plot point is eventually written out and never mentioned again.

But Chaos Theory? Nah, they’re adults now! No more plot armor for you.

Brooklynn LOST HER ARM to a dinosaur, and it ACTUALLY showed her blood on the floor and her experiencing phantom pain and healing from the wound, as well as a prosthetic arm.

Don’t even get me STARTED on Ben. The way they showed how he got impaled and the thagomizer or wtv got lodged inside his abdomen? And all his screams of pain? And his hallucinations, how he slowly got weaker and paler and more loopy by the minute. The actual effects of the pain and blood loss actually having a long term effect on him wouldn’t have happened in camp c, because he wouldn’t have gotten hurt like that. Also, his being in a wheelchair and having a heart specialist? Beautiful. I know it’s because they were kids and the show couldn’t make them get too injured because of that, it still seemed unrealistic how they were getting beat up left and right without any actual effects. The injuries in Chaos Theory were a lot more realistic, but also a lot more gruesome and upsetting to the point I’m surprised both shows have the same age rating.

Personally, I am so glad the writers made the decision to have Ben live in the end. For me, what happened was so much more satisfying than if he had died.

The six of them have been through so much together and they fought so hard to save him, his death would have been so bleak.

Instead, I am really glad Ben got to live with the knowledge of how loved he truly is. Plus, they made it clear Ben will probably have long lasting affects from what happened for a long time, maybe even the rest of his life.

I like this outcome because it's not a magical "Ben is all healed" moment. It's a "Ben will be loved and taken care of by his found family like he took care of them many times while he gets better and learns to adapt with what happened" moment.

I really like the message that Ben may never be as mobile or as physically active as he was before the injury, but he is still loved, cared for, and valued. More media needs messages like that tbh.

i know the dan and phil reveal inevitably is a Tumblr Event TM and that means that the stuff that gets talked about is ironically very surface level and focused on how the Phandom (TM) feels but can we talk about the WRITING of that video??? the ART of it?????

the intro, for starters: it's INTENTIONAL. the bedsheets are ON PURPOSE. the shirts that match the bedsheets. the premise: how they were reduced to the Iconic Matching Bedsheets because that was how the fans Branded them. the intimacy of the bed setting. different but belonging together, the perfect speculated Are They Dating.

confirming it 7 seconds in to finally take control of the narrative.

then, the title card: gloved hands ripping apart the bedsheets and setting them on fire. anonymous people on the internet ruining something so incredibly private, ripping it apart and setting the dregs on fire. THAT'S the theme of the video: why they kept it a secret.. and why they're sharing it now. taking control of the narrative, shedding a light on the damage that was done.

when there are clips of old videos that were since privated i don't think it's accidental that they're taken from torrent sites with the logo intact and not the official upload. BECAUSE THAT'S THE WHOLE POINT. it feels invasive. IT WAS INVASIVE.

it's ART. it's INTENTIONAL. yeah they're dating but they're WRITERS. this isn't just a dating announcement, it's an introspective art film. a video essay. a think piece. so many layers to this video that i think many people are missing or ignoring.

then the REBRAND. it's such a powerful conclusion to a video all about strangers controlling the narrative of one's life and career, and finally freeing oneself from that chokehold. setting boundaries. deciding for yourself what, and how, you do from now on. a metamorphosis, maybe. finally taking back the control that was ripped from them for all those years.

incredible work, lads. im so proud of you.

thinking about red vs blue is crazy because it's like:

this is a story about how you can't keep chasing ghosts forever. there's alien/human mpreg.

holding onto the past is holding you back - you have to learn to let go and say goodbye. ed robertson from the barenaked ladies plays a guy who (jokingly?) tells his soldiers that if he weren't their CO he'd make them call him daddy.

family isn't always defined by appearances and you may find it in those you least expect. the aliens speak entirely in blargs and honks.

everything we do is driven by love - love for your current companions and loves that have been lost along the way. it has one of the most intense and longest running queer-baits i've ever personally witnessed.

veterans aren't given the proper support to be able to return to a civilian life, and this systemic issue causes problems for everyone in all levels of society. there's a homophobic bomb.

you can't change what's happened to you and the ones you love; you just have to find a way to keep moving forward. one of the main characters only speaks in poorly translated spanish.

everyone has the capacity to change and be better. it has two (completely unrelated) insanely complicated time travel plots, and they’re both only dubiously canon.

it's an incredible piece of media and proof that you can create something magical with the limited tools available to you. there are chunks of it that are borderline unwatchable.

it's changed the way I approach storytelling forever. i can't easily recommend it to pretty much anyone.

What item Ralsei is theory

So, the most popular takes we've got right now are red horn headband or Asriel's fur (or dust, if you want random angst). But what if he's not tied to Asriel at all?

Ralsei is a drawing Kris made of themself as a monster. They were desperate to fit in with their family, so they drew their monstersona using green crayon and adding details of themselves to the design.

-Ch 3 between the rounds you can leave Susie to talk to Tenna alone, and you can talk to Ralsei in the meantime. If you talk about "his face", he looks away sadly, noting that he knows he "looks like someone". But Kris starts laughing at it.

-Ch 4 while hanging out with Susie in town, you can show her a photo of Asriel. She thinks it's Ralsei photoshoped into the picture and then is put off by how adamantly Kris starts pointing out the differences, even though she doesn't really care.

Ralsei looks like Asriel, because obviously siblings would look similar. That's why Kris drew their sona similar to their brother. If you want to go there, Ralsei has feminine features despite being a guy bc Kris was struggling with their gender identity at the time while drawing the sona.

Ralsei has pink horns and pink eyes. Kris has red eyes and used to wear the red horn headband to fit in with their family. Those traits would be transferred onto their sona. Red color fading into pink with time, as drawings tend to do.

Green crayon is missing bc they used it up to draw the sona a long time ago. Their sweater is green, their sona would wear green too.

And he lives in the school supply closet dark world. In the next room over and in Toriel's classroom there are other drawings that very much feel like Kris-made too. It explains why Ralsei is SO attached to Kris, beyond "player is here". Kris created him, was attached to this drawing of what they'd like to be. And then things happened and the drawing was left in the closet to wither and fade. Waiting for when Kris comes back. Of course Ralsei wants to spend all the time with them now.

It's very likely Kris knows what Ralsei is, and that's why they're laughing, why they're pointing out the differences between him and Asriel. It's not supposed to be "Asriel but darkener", it's supposed to be them as the same monster type their family is.

deltarune and layers of abstraction

i feel like a big theme deltarune is going for is "how many layers of abstraction do you need before you're able to convince yourself to do something morally wrong"

there's the real world, there's the light world, there's the dark world, and now there's a game world in the dark world. even people who are doing a "good" run are incentivized to kill the enemies in mantle, because even kris doesn't see it as real - they're having fun after the first game! but... there's still a stat tracking your kills.

i feel like the line that made this all click for me is nightmare's line on the alt route. it says that kris was enjoying yesterday, too - because there's a part of them that enjoys not having responsibility. and i think that's supposed to apply to you, too. you can say it isn't really you, because none of this is even real! sure, you're DOING these evil things, but it's just a video game, right?

and ralsei says that it's ok to treat darkners however you want! because THEY'RE not real, either! they're just your imagination, you're just playing make-believe. it's all just a game. obviously we're conditioned to disagree with this - ralsei is real! we love ralsei, kris loves ralsei, susie loves ralsei! but we're still treating them like our toys. writing fanfics, making art, writing these theories, we're not treating them like real people anyways.

and what about the devs? what layer are they on, when they're writing and designing all the horrible things you can do in this game? they're the ones who allow it to happen in the first place! are they to blame for it?

i don't really know where i'm going with all this, i just wanted to try and organize my thoughts. i dont think toby is implying that it's morally bad to be evil in video games, considering like i said he's the one writing this whole story in the first place, i just think that he wants the players to think about it in a different context.

one thing that makes me sad is the fact that most of the time after removing the soul, kris immediately goes to eat or drink. because we've been making them sprint for 9 hours around town on moss and hot chocolate and dark world food isn't real

susie's story (esp in ch4) is so deftly realised. so often you see the "character who thinks little of themself is encouraged to pursue their True Value" storyline unfold in a way that has the character redirected away from "unfitting" desires, like a physically weak character who wants to be physically strong learning to value their personality instead or whatever but susie. susie who is - mechanically, in her stats in the game - best suited to hitting things with an axe, who "doesn't look like she should be playing the piano", is encouraged to pursue a skill she doesn't have because an educator took the time to get to know her and realise what she has genuine passion for. and she's not automatically great at it! she has objectively bad spelling and grammar in her letter to alvin, it's not like she unlocked some secret hidden talent - storytelling and communicating and creative expression in general is something she cares a lot about and genuinely enjoys, but it's something she has to work for. there's a reason why the gerson fight is so long and gruelling. but through this hard work and better understanding of herself we see susie learn how to reject imposed frameworks that occlude her actual personality - she literally shatters the tapestry that tells her the one and only way her story can end, and in doing so prevents Kris from ever having the chance to think of her in that position, whatever it is. it's her story, and she's learning how to tell it.

AND all of this is done without for even a second implying she needs to be even the tiniest bit more feminine than her rough and rude masculine self. hell, from the way she and gerson mirror each other in their loud and abrasive laughs, her unapologetic butchness is presented as a trait that aligns her closer with him and from there with her truest self
