It's not just that unions went away, though that's a large part of it, it's tied into how they went away. And ultimately that old bastard Ronald Reagan. Of course.

Basically, even fairly middle of the road Liberal people bought into the Trickle Down bullshit, enough that they were like, "Oooh! The market. That's what makes rich people rich! Of course it's a great idea to invest our pensions in that. We can trust these people."

It was maddening arguing this with well meaning people who thought of themselves as left, back in the 90s. Like an inescapable looming train wreck. In clear 20/20 hindsight /goddamn/ they were naive!

See also the boom of private prisons, investment/savings bank deregulation, militarization of the police, criminalization of homelessness, and a whole host of other long term mistakes since the 80s/90s.

The short of it is that the definition of a "Liberal" has slowly morphed into what used to be called "Neo Liberal" (who not coincidentally don't like unions), enough that it's now essentially a center right mindset. A long term slide inextricably tied to always accepting the "lesser of two evils", while never quite grasping how in many situations that enables evil, such as 401k replacing pensions, in the first place.
