there’s something about Simon and Ava not having(or at least not mentioning) last names. Idk how to properly articulate it. They have their labels as convict, the butcher, Eden scum, and the captain, and those are the roles they play for the machine. One of the only things they have under that is their names, and I think Simon(and the viewer)really understands that especially when he finds out they never knew his. When ava offers her name to me it was her showing a bit of her humanity despite everything that’s happened, and Simon telling her his name was a way of him, even for only a little bit, to break free of the label he’s been given.
