sovaia remembered every single house she would set foot into and stayed in for a bit ever since she learned the ability to do so, and picking up a cheap box of crayon with ones that only gives a faint color every time you run them across paper, not exactly like the ones most kids would have, those bright, expressive colors that she’d only imagine what it’s like to have. she was quiet, would only look around the room, at people’s faces, study them, perhaps understand their feeling, the way how their lips would slightly curve, down to the lines that had told their age. memories of people she’s met stuck with her, even when how she interprets memories on paper quite doesn’t do justice, but etched perfectly in her brain.
she had just turned thirteen, and not long after the next house she steps into isn’t just any place anymore. it was home, as she would be told. even if it was said, that it was promised, it was something she’d find hard to believe. she followed every rule, be as good as she is of a daughter. it took a while to stuck to her, unlike how she’d hold of memories. it was a struggle getting used to.
one day, those crayons she’d only see in television were handed to her by her adoptive parents, a gift, something she thought she’d never have. for the first time, sovaia smiled, genuinely, she had a family.
it didn’t take long until holly came to her life. she was beautiful, she had this light shining upon her and for the first time, sovaia hoped that she like her, that they can be friends. she’s never really had one before. to this day, she has never told holly this. not feeling her presence for a long time made her worry she won’t get the chance to tell her this. maybe now, hopefully, she could.
if holly had music, sovaia had art, as she grew up, it was where she excelled most, was able to express herself, and that, along with how dedicated she was to her studies, is one of the reason she was not only popular, but also the perfect student. she followed rules, did as she was told, did the right thing.

along the way she met quinn and got close with him, in a way that would still make her laugh to this day. a middle school crush, the urge to get their attention, she would grab their hand to hold.

she laid low, joined the mango bay art district, perhaps being home would help her find what she was searching for. two months ago to this day, she encounters demian, and immediately his art captured her attention. not a care if it followed standards, rules or belief. it was just them, expressed in imperfect lines, in colors that one would not expect to work together.

quinn is a little biased, but he loves pride month. it’s his favorite month-long event during the summer. besides, it’s nice to see visitors enjoying themselves around palmview. he dashes and avoids a few people as he casually sprints to his and indigo’s meeting spot. “ indi, hey, ” quinn says as he stands next to her. “ how’d you get here so fast? was there a shortcut? ” he looks around as though this so-called shortcut is going to manifest. “ let’s get inside before the chicken wings run out. ” it’s a joke; this chicken wings place always has chicken. “ i tried to get us a table, but they’re doing the walk-in situation right now, it seems. ”
honestly, if one were to ask indigo about her scenery as of late, she'd say the rainbow is too bright for her eyes during this month of celebration of pride, yet it was something she isn't really opposed of. it is one time, one month of the year to celebrate. "well, my rocket is pretty fast, and i'm starving like hell, bro, the second you said chicken wings? my stomach growled." indigo gives quinn this dramatic expression, putting her hand on her stomach. "i mean we have do the tall tables and just eat while standing, we can do this bro, we can adapt! we can't give up!"
“oh?” is her initial response, looking over at indigo with a raised brow. if nothing else, avani was in the same boat; there were far too many options and not enough time, money, space in her stomach. “i've seen something like that on instagram, i think? out of new york city. haven't been, but it made me curious.” hums softly, bouncing on the heels of her feet. “not really. unless you have the devastating cooties?” she jokes, chuckling – it was not that funny, avani. “i'm fine with it. what were you thinking?”
"i've only seen them on instagram reels, thought it was fake, because how the fuck are the colors aren't mixing up and turning it into some shade of unappetizing brown." she frowns at the thought, but so far, that doesn't seem to be an issue as she sees people ordering their sandwiches and they do... look as colorful as they were planned to. what avani says next makes indigo laugh, turning to look at the other. "i would never, trust me, i'm free of cooties, nothing to be conscious about, i am totally safe." she then lets out a deep exhale before responding to her question. "okay, we order difference halves of the menu, then we get to try everything and not miss a single one. you up for it?"
"good morning, happy pride!" kenna grinned as she held out a flyer with all of the workshops she had coming up at the community center. "we have events going on all month long. does anything pique your interest?"
"well, happy pride to you, too." indigo gives the girl a smile, taking the flyer from the other as she reads through things on the list, humming to herself, before glancing back up. "wait, what is...serigraphy? that sounds hella interesting."

to be entirely honest, she wasn't sure what she was expecting; however avani is very happy to be in the comfort of a welcoming space. there was so much to see that it was actually kind of overwhelming. she's browsing the stands and basking in the sun when she stops at one of the food booths — head tilting at the menu. “be honest, what one are you going to try?” asks to the person next to her. “i've walked through most of these booths and can't decide on which one sounds better.”

if you have come to know indigo montiel, daughter of gustavo and tamara montiel, she has not always been the person people knew her to be today. she used to be soft, loving, a ray of sunshine whenever she walks in the room. her parents weren’t billionaires, nor owner of such famous companies one could think of, yet they were both well respected members of the community. her father was a businessman; owner of a small construction company and he would never not put his people first. her mother was a communications advisor to the mayor sometime ago, yet has chosen to retire early to focus on her.
yet as indigo grew up, her path has diverged in the wrong path, she rebelled, rejected what her potential could bring her into. perhaps it was due to the fact that how uptight her father was, how he would always keep his daughter clean as a whistle, too uptight that one day she had lashed out on him and walked away, forming a rift on their relationship. her mother, on the other hand, even though she could be someone who could see through her daughter’s excuses whenever she would get herself in trouble, her mother still welcomed her with open arms, listened to her still, as she wanted to be deeply involved in her life. it lasted for years, and it had been their dynamic, even after she moved out, until a few years after, she receives a call from her father, and he sounded. it did strike her differently, and she couldn’t say no to him, and her mom, when he said he wanted to talk, that he had a lot to say to her.
she waited at the restaurant for hours, kept checking her phone, worry taking over her. until her phone rings once again. it was a different voice on the other end of the line.
her parents were in a car crash, and did not make it. her one chance to reconcile with her father was thrown away forever.
she spirals, and became worse that she was all these years. it wasn’t that she wanted to die, yet she stopped being afraid of it, risking her life on the line. she was restless, not being able to sleep at night as the voice of her father keeps echoing in the silence of her home. she was angry, angry at herself for being mad for as long as she did, until it was too late.
that recklessness and lack of regard echoed when the storm hit one day. it was unexpected, a lot of people were at the beach, and immediately they scattered away to shelter when it hit. two swimmers were stuck in the rough waves. indigo grabbed a rescue board and ran to the water to save one, with the other a long distance away. she knew she should wait for backup, for the other lifeguards to help, yet she goes against her training anyway. by the time she gets to the other swimmer and make sure they were saved, she was too exhausted to come back.
another wave hits her, a strong one, rougher that she can ever think of. it knocks her out and sends her under. she had been underwater for a while, until the current drags her out, with another lifeguard pulling her to the shore. no pulse, no sign of breathing. they thought she was dead, and she was, clinically, for a minute or two. until she was revived.
yet that wasn’t enough to stop her from being who she is, how she is.
it has been a few years, yet it still stuck with people who knew about that day, who were there to witness it.
