There are SO many options to choose from when it comes to wedding dress material. If this is your first time searching for your special dress it can be confusing and overwhelming.

Whilst it may feel challenging in the beginning, there are a few main wedding dress fabrics you can start with.

Satin fabric 

Satin is more than just a shiny fabric. A satin weave can blend with many types of fabrics. Satin refers to the weave, not the textile, which means you can use satin to create a range of different fabrics. 

Mikado satin is a popular wedding dress material choice for many brides. It’s a lovely soft fabric made from a silk combination. Mikado is a twill weave fabric that is fairly stiff. It’s is a wonderful choice for modern, architectural gowns. It is less shiny than satin and less matte than say, a crepe. 

Dupion is also a silk fabric that is heavier, stiffer, and medium in weight.

Crepe Fabric

Crêpe, commonly spelled crepe, is a luxurious fabric that was traditionally made from silk, but can now can be made from almost any fiber. Crepe types vary from thin and lightweight to thick and heavyweight. Most crepe fabrics have a beautiful drape.

Silk crepe de Chine fabric doesn’t have the puckered surface typical of other crêpes; instead, the silk fabric has a smooth, matte finish with slight pebbling. This look is achieved by using tightly twisted yarns as weft yarns in a plain weave pattern. Polyester crêpe de Chine is a more affordable version with a similar appearance and feel to the silk fabric.

Crepe georgette: Crepe georgette fabric also has a soft, smoother appearance and is primarily made from silk or synthetic silk-like fibers, like rayon. Silk georgette has a little elasticity and a nice drape. Crepe georgette fabric is a popular fabric for dresses.

Canton crepe: Canton crepe was originally made of silk from Canton province in China, which is where the name comes from. It is very similar to crepe de chine in appearance, but it is slightly heavier, as the fill yarns in the weave are heavier.

Plissé crepe: Plissé crepe is achieved by chemically treating the fabric to achieve the puckered and crinkled appearance. A piece of fabric is either pressed with hot rollers to create the pattern, or covered in a wax pattern and dipped in an alkaline solution. The areas uncovered by wax will shrink, and when the wax is removed, the fabric will be intentionally wrinkled.

Crepe charmeuse: Crepe charmeuse is a silk fabric that is woven using the satin weave technique with crepe twist yarns. Silk charmeuse is smooth and reflective like satin, with a dull back. The crepe yarns give the fabric the signature crepe definition.

Tulle fabric 

English silk tulle is made with a slightly larger weave so it is the sheerest option available for silk tulle. This type of silk tulle is also starched so it is a little crisper though it is still flowy and softer than the bridal illusion many veils are made from. This tulle is strong enough to sew lace onto.

French silk tulle is the most luxurious type of silk tulle available. It is incredibly soft and flowy.

Illusion tulle is used to hold a dress in place. For example, a very low back wedding dress may need an illusion tulle to hold lace appliques or over the bust for comfort.

Georgette fabric

Georgette is a type of crêpe fabric that is typically made from pure silk but can also be made from synthetic fibers like rayon, viscose, and polyester. Chiffon is thinner and sheerer and has more drape.

Georgette has a thicker ply, resulting in a heavier fabric that although sheer, is more semi sheer if compared to chiffon.

We can make a few modifications to the style such as changing the neckline, removing straps, or changing the shape of the skirt.

2. Get a quote

Request a quote for your dress. We’ll review your ideas and get right back to you with a personalised quote.

If you’d like to go ahead and book in your dress all you need to do is pay the deposit via one of our secure payment methods – bank transfer, Stripe or PayPal.

3. Confirm your brief

Next, we’ll ask you to provide your measurements and your preferences for colour, train length and fabrics.

We’ll send you a design brief containing the photos and all the instructions for your dress.

Once you confirm all the details are correct we put your dress into production.

4. We make your dress

Our professional dressmakers sew your dress by hand.

Then our quality control process checks it matches all the details in your brief and we make any adjustments necessary.

We’ll be in touch with you when it’s almost finished so you can organise the remainder payment before it’s shipped to you.

We will also provide a photo of your dress before you need to pay the final installment.

If you live in Melbourne or Victoria you are welcome to come in for fittings. You will work with our partner alterations service, Elle & Stuart.

5. Dress Reveal /final fittings

Please request that you would like fittings in your quote. You have the option to select.

Basic Tweaking

Simple alterations begin with hemming the length, adjusting the sides of the gown, and fine-tuning the fit of the dress. Please remember there may be additional costs depending on what you want to be alternated to your dress. We have made your dress to your measurements, so expect minor changes to be needed, if at all. Your tailor will explain the costs and as you go.

Customisation

More extensive changes can be made with enough budgeted time and money (these will cost more). Customisations include adding details like off-the-shoulder straps, sleeves, train length, lace appliqués, beading, buttons, and a bustle. The cost will be determined in addition by the tailor.

How many fittings will I need?

We recommend two fitting sessions, which are included in our fee. The first fitting to measure and pin, and the second fitting, you will see how your gown fits.

Your first fitting will be 6 – 8 weeks or so before your wedding date.  Your second fitting should be a minimum of two weeks before your wedding date.

When I first got engaged I thought I had a good idea of the style of wedding dress that I wanted. Then I started the hunt for my dress and tried on my ‘ideal’ dress style in a few stores but wasn’t that impressed with how I looked. How disappointing!

It was only when one of the store managers suggested I try some other dress styles that I would have initially passed by, that I found out what actually suited my body and made me feel a million dollars.

Nothing can beat trying on a variety of different styles, shapes and fabrics to see what actually works for you. You might be surprised!

It also helps to be realistic about your body and what dress styles are best suited to you. While a dress may look amazing on a designer’s model, most of us don’t have the same shaped body and therefore we can’t expect the dress to look the same on us.

If you have a large bust

You’ll need a dress with some structure, or the ability to wear a bra or corset underneath. If you prefer a strapless dress look for corset closures at the back and boning in the bodice. You need to be able to pull the dress in firmly to hold the weight of your breasts.

Alternatively, a dress with shoulder straps or sleeves that allows you to wear a bra underneath would work. Also look for V shape necklines. They usually have shoulder straps the vertical lines help to lengthen your torso.

If you have a long torso

Look for Aline or ballgown dress styles with waistbands or a seam around the waist. By circling your waist and having a skirt with volume, it gives the impression of longer legs as the skirt starts from the waist. Tulle originated from a small city Tulle in south, central France. It is a light weight fabric, similar to netting, but much, much finer. It’s relative stiffness and small mesh holes makes it idea for veils and bridal wedding dress skirts and yes, it’s famous for ballet tutus.
