once again got distracted by something that i lost my mind over and have to point out or i might actually die. so episode 10. and the thing i noticed is that song lan is happy to let xiao xingchen take the lead pretty much constantly. he knows xiao xingchen is capable. he’d Rather Not deal with people. the way they stand pretty well speaks to this through the whole episode.

almost the entire episode they’re either completely level with each other or xiao xingchen is positioned slightly ahead

xiao xingchen is talking to the others, it’s fine. they’re basically level with each other.

then bam. jin guangyao and his dimples start talking about them coming back.

and song lan immediately steps forward. 

not even that noticeably either but i really appreciate that he was super content to let xiao xingchen take the lead throughout the entire situation up until this point. there was no way for the show, really, to add that extra chapter where they run into xue yang and jin guangyao but i enjoy the fact that they give a little subtle hint to the fact that they just Do Not Vibe with jin guangyao.

The Set Design of Cloud Recesses

The residence of the Gusu Lan family, Cloud Recesses, is designed to appear half hidden in the mist and clouds, with pine trees, bamboo forests, and waterfalls in the surrounding landscape. These paint the picture of pine trees lying beneath flying waterfalls and blue-green smoke reaching for the moon, the epitome of a Chinese garden in the Jiangsu region.

The Gusu Lan’s family motto is to be proper and upright, which overall takes inspiration from the culture of the scholar-bureaucrat caste during the Wei-Jin Period (c. 265-420). Their main colour is pale blue. Their utensils and wares tend to be blue-green or green in colour and regularly shaped, chiefly Ru ware [1] and Ding ware [2]. The Lans also place a heavy emphasis on ancient texts, calligraphy, and tea ceremonies, reflecting the Lan clan’s elegance and fairness.

A well known setting in the show, the Jingshi was originally the residence of Lan Wangji’s mother, and it later became his residence. The Jingshi is built within the bamboo forests of a high mountain, creating an elegant and peaceful atmosphere that allows one to escape from the world amongst the deep clouds. Pine trees and bamboo are often used to represent purity, aloofness, and pride; with pine trees by the side of this constructed residence, and with the bamboos as friends [3], further emphasising and making the residence owner’s elegance stand out.

OKAY! okay okay okay so we all know how Mandarin Chinese is an ideographic language, one in which the same sound (say, xi, first tone) can refer to a multitude of different possible written characters, depending on context (so xi1 can be 溪 / creek、兮 / meaningless particle in poetry, often denoting a sigh、曦 / dawn、希 / few、西 / west、惜 / to cherish、吸 / to inhale...)

So Lan Xichen’s courtesy name, 曦臣 xichen, is xi, first tone, chen, second tone

A binome that also happens to be xi, first tone, and chen, second tone is 吸尘, of 吸尘器, aka ‘vacuum cleaner’

Can I say, I don't understand why people think that Yanli going to Nightless City is a plothole? Her husband died, and people think it was WWX. Now a big fight is happening, where her two brothers, who are also the only thing left of her family, may DIE. And from her (and everybody's) pov, WWX has snapped and is slaughtering everybody. Like... what is she supposed to do, stay home and hope for the best? Of course she ran there in the hope she could calm WWX down and save him and JC. Now, is [1]

ooof... so I’ve recently become aware that whether or not Jiang Yanli’s death is considered an example of fridging is actually a pretty contentious issue in this fandom, so I’m going to abstain from making a definitive statement because I’ve seen compelling arguments either way.

I think for me, Jiang Yanli’s death rubbed me the wrong way because:

 we’re already real short on female characters in this show, 

the logistics of her presence at Nightless City are... confusing, to say the least, and 

the way Jiang Yanli’s death was depicted felt melodramatic and forced 

Point 3 is something I’m a little more willing to forgive because generic difference in 煽情 and all that; point 2 becomes a little iffier -- if it’s impossible or impractical for Jiang Yanli to be at Nightless City at all, then her presence there implies that her sole purpose in the scene was to die there, regardless of how much it makes sense for her to make certain decisions based on character. That being said, folks have come up with plausible explanations for how Jiang Yanli, a grieving widow low in cultivational ability, managed to get from Lanling to Nightless City

I’m not saying that her death is completely off-base and an example of fridging, because her absence in the post-resurrection arc of the story is an absolutely critical point in the lives and characterizations of multiple important figures in the cast. That being said, nothing about Jiang Yanli’s death sparks joy in my heart, and the lack of joy is, to a certain degree, associated with narrative dissatisfaction

In which Jiang Cheng works for Lotus Pier and Wen Qing works for Nevernight. Jiang Cheng is a “big time contractor” and Wen Qing runs a “IT server company” downtown. They live in a 3000 sqr feet house in the rich suburbs and their neighbors are all ordinary (annoying) families with 2.5 kids and a picket fence. Everything is “fine” in their lackluster sham of a marriage until they’re sent to kill a common target. And then shit hits the fan.

LWJ runs a Chinese calligraphy channel where he transcribes famous poems, and dissects each poem in that calm, soothing voice of his. Only LWJ’s hands are captured in his videos, never his face, but he has very nice hands, and a very nice voice, and his videos are 1) super educational, 2) very aesthetically pleasing, and 3) really calming in that ASMR sort of way.

WWX runs a music channel, where he does dizi covers of cpop songs that...should not work with the dizi, but ridiculously sounds amazing every single time. He occasionally uploads videos of him pranking JC, and he’s also really popular on Douyin. He’s probably a hotshot on Youtube as well.

WWX doesn’t really know what it is about LWJ’s videos that interest him so much, but he sits in front of his laptop and refreshes LWJ’s page every Friday night waiting for a new video. He makes it a point to comment “FIRST!!!!!!!!” on every single one of LWJ’s videos (he will follow up with another comment to that chain waxing lyrical about LWJ’s penmanship and a quirky comment about the poem of the week). 

For the past six or so months, LWJ has started replying to his comment with some variation of “Of course you are.” just as WWX comments, like he stays to wait for WWX's comment, the same way WWX stays to wait for his new video. He always leaves a long reply to WWX’s more substantive comment as well, and it always makes WWX smile. LWJ feels like a friend, even if their only real interaction is essentially just this weekly conversation about literature and how beautiful LWJ’s strokes are on this particular character. 

LWJ uploads a new video out of nowhere on a Sunday night one week. WWX watches it as soon as he gets the notification. He means to immediately leave his usual “FIRST!!!!!!” comment, but he startles, because instead of LWJ’s voice calmly reading out the title of the poem of the week, there is the most beautiful man sitting in front of a guqin, fingers in place, and oh, WWX knows those hands, those are LWJ’s hands, and- And LWJ looks into the camera, smiles ever so slightly, and says, “For you.” And then he plays a perfect harmony to WWX’s most recent dizi cover. 

It’s the first (and only) video of LWJ’s that WWX doesn’t get to leave his usual “FIRST!!!!!!” comment. He sends private message to LWJ instead, heat beating loudly in his chest. 

LWJ replies.
