The practice room is too clean...

Not sterile. Just... emptied out in such a way that feels very intentional. Like someone came through one last time, gathered all of the noise, folded it neatly and all that's left is that echo. Not even the fog and sweat like how it used to envelop all the mirrors...

Those were the days.

Then somewhere bleeding through the speaker, Jopping starts up; that familiar intro, low and almost reluctant. The smallest breath of laugh uncontrollably escapes... Of all the songs in this company's repertoire.

It sounds thinner like this... incomplete. Stripped off the crowd, the lights, bodies moving in perfect sync like always. Now just reduced to a track echoing mirrored walls. His gaze immediately drifts to that certain spot, landing on a familiar scuff near center floor.

Hyung, watch this.

Tongue clicking softly at the soft spot of cheek, attempting to interrupt another memory if he's agile enough. Doesn't work. Jaw shifting, holding something in place before it slips...

Jongin had walked into the practice room almost right when the song had started playing, like it was designed to be that way, and there's a pang of sadness that runs through him as he thinks about the group and all that they've lost.

Especially the recent one.

A low sigh leaves him as he thinks about the kid, his friend, someone he got really close to during the SuperM days and how the halls won't really be the same without him. No more laughter, no more excited greetings and wanting to show him new things, no more help with his English and teaching Jongin new words.

No more Mark Lee.

In his thoughts, Jongin almost misses the other man in the room and one look at him, the older knows exactly what is going through his head. If Jongin misses the kid for small things, he couldn't possibly imagine what Taeyong is going through as the leader.

"Hey, Taeyong-ah." He calls out softly, not wanting to alarm the other as he places his bag down and indicates towards the speakers. "For old time sake?"

Yunho listens and keeps pace with his elder. the fresh air helping wake him up as they moved. His eyes scanning around while he listened. Yunho flashes another smile and nods, as he crosses his arms over his chest. and moving to stifle a yawn with his left hand. He gives a small hum. "Thank you hyung. Though if it was art you were after, you should have asked for the captain, he designs clothing." Yunho nods. "San and Jongho can draw, very well." He says slowly uncrossing his arms once the urge to yawn had passed. He keeps his steps short, his eyes moving around. "Well you won't be the only one struggling i promise. But it will be fun." He smooths down his shirt, it's rather stiff, most likely new. "So graphic design, that is like computer stuff right? no too messy today. Computers i know, Photoshop too." He giggles, his smile widening fully as he feels himself feeling more alert, ready for the challenge.

Jongin laughs at the responds from his junior, nodding his head because he used to think the same thing once upon a time. "Don't worry, it's not about what skills you have, it's more about learning the programs and showcasing them in a way that makes us suffer." He grins and remembers when he nearly knocked over wine while serving customers in the hotel episode.

As the men walk towards the entrance, some of the students stop and look at them, dressed as if they attend. Jongin is wearing the bomber jacket of the university with a backpack on so he looks the part. Doing so often causes people to stare and wonder who he is, especially when people don't really recognise him.

"I think so—" There's slight hesitation in his voice as he looks at one of the staff, the other giving him a nod while also explaining what else they'll be doing. "Oh, okay." He nods and looks at Yunho, "so it sounds like you were basically right on that."

Is it bad to say that being around you puts me in a good mood?

A soft, small scoff follows immediately at those words. Dismissive. Light enough to pass as teasing of course but also quick enough to keep it from landing somewhere it shouldn't. How many times had he said those lines to anyone, really? Fingers shifting around the bouquet still sitting on her lap, smoothening out a petal that didn't need any sort of fixing in the first place.

Something to do....

Something to feel.

And without thinking, body angling just enough as shoulders easing back against the plush of leather, making space... anticipating. And then, nothing. No reach across, not a quiet voice of him saying 'hold on'. Just the soft click of his own seatbelt, the shift of gears.

❝ 뭐야...~ (What...~) That sounds like a line. You say that to everyone you drive around? You keep saying things like that, I might start believing you. ❞

Light. Easy. Very her.

Very them.

Just a joke. Bantering, nothing more than that. Her hand moves immediately, fingers finding the metal end of her own seatbelt, pulling it across with a smooth motion, a soft click cutting cleanly before it can turn into anything else. Like this is always hers to do. And like she wasn't expecting anything to begin with.

❝ Mmm... that's good, though. ❞

Gaze flicking towards him for a fleeting moment, just enough to catch that curve of that charming smile and the way he looks ahead like he actually means it before looking away again... back to the blur of passing bright lights outside the window.

❝ Quite the busy man, you are. As always. ❞

Not quite a concern nor a praise. Just stating a fact. She's been busy herself too. Just an acknowledgement, the kind that doesn't ask for anything in return. A passing silence lingers for a moment, not awkward or uncomfortable.

❝ So this is how you are when practice goes well? ❞ Another small scoff that's much softer this time, a small smile tugging at the corners of those glossy lips. ❝ Duly noted. ❞

The back of her mind goes back to categorizing it, there's nothing more than that.

Jongin's brow wrinkles slightly at her response. While he's used to the way that she is, the way she holds herself and he respects it, her, everything that she is — there's something about this one that has him a little bothered.

"Why wouldn't you believe me?" Jongin questions, not pushing for an actual answer but genuinely confused. "When do I ever say things that I don't mean? I do like being around you and seeing you — it makes me smile, Nayeon-ah."

This starts to cause the man to wonder if he doesn't give enough. Does he compliment her enough? Praise her? Show her how much he appreciates her? Why wouldn't she believe the words that he so readily gives her and nobody else?

Who else is there?

While he's internalising, he continues to show that smile, that charming one that shows those dimples that he thinks are one of his more attractive features. That's something he's been practicing, how to look calm on the outside while thinking about something serious — mostly because he knows his face gives everything away.

"How are you going, hm? I know you're still touring, you all must be feeling exhausted after all the work that you're doing?" The one good thing about being an older group, especially a male group, is that there's a point where you can focus on something outside of tours and never being home. "Have you been resting while since you've been home?" There's a gentle care in his tone as he drives, glancing her way before looking at the road again.

While driving, Jongin wants to hear about what she's been doing, how she's been and seeing if there's any way that he can help her relax before they continue their tour. He hasn't been able to see her in a while and it feels like they've barely spoken while both being busy — not a good sign in his opinion, so he wants to try fix that.

He wants to make sure that this remains good. Safe. A happy dynamic for the both of him.

seonghwa’s brows lift slightly, a flicker of surprise passing through his expression before it settles into quiet admiration. he lets out a small, controlled laugh, shaking his head like he’s trying to play it cool, but he can’t hide the respect in the way he studies jongin’s posture and timing. “hyung… that didn’t look like a first try,” he says, tone light but genuine, a hint of disbelief in his voice. he nods once, acknowledging it without making a big deal, lips pressed into a restrained smile. “and… anthem worthy, huh?” he adds, eyes briefly flicking to jongin, a subtle pride mixing with his respect, “glad you think our song’s that good.”

he steps back into position, rolling his shoulders once as he refocuses, more intent now that he knows the level he’s dancing with. “okay, let’s run it full out this time,” he says, voice steady, determination settling in as he cues the music. his movements are sharper, more deliberate, matching jongin’s precision while staying true to his own style, careful not to break the flow. he keeps his gaze forward, aware of jongin’s presence beside him, letting the senior’s example push him a little harder. when they finish, he exhales softly, glancing over with a small nod of approval. “that’s good… i think we’ve got it,” he says, more energized now, “let’s film before the energy drops.”

There's a laugh that escapes him at the tone, like he's been caught in the lie but Jongin simply gives Seonghwa his signature grin, "okay, maybe I've listened to it a few times already."

That's the thing about Jongin, he's always paying attention to what is coming out, supporting his fellow idols especially when he has a good relationship with them. He's been listening to the ATEEZ album, he's checked out a few other groups that have debuted, and he's even been dancing along to some girl groups that he's enjoyed.

It's a good thing to support those around you.

When they start again, Jongin keeps the energy high, his facial expressions matching what they're performing as if this is his song and not someone else's. He makes it his own, making sure to keep his movements sharp and precise with a little added flair. He can't help himself, he never could, he loves dancing too much.

"Sounds good," he nods, watching one of the staff lift up the phone camera and count them down. The music starts and he's already hopping in place, grinning at Seonghwa and nudging him a little to make it seem like they didn't just practice it.

Each move, hit in time, his energy never faltering even as the song fades off and he continues to roll into something a little more fun with a laugh. Oh, this was fun. It's been a while and he missed that.
