notes for bookbinding
封面多于book cover(greyboard) 2 cm,要折进去。
bookbinding process:
1. drill. 8mm away from the content (picture)
2.sew. I use plain sew.
3. cut the spine.
5mm away from the holes.
glue the spine, strengthen
4. glue the endpaper.
5.measure the other 3 edges.
3mm away from the picture. cut.
6. glue the cloth to strengthen the spine.
2mm away from the edge.
7.grey board size
greyboard width= book endpaper width - 2mm
greyboard length=book endpaper length + 3mm×2
8. spine width= book thickness + 2 book cover thickness
9. glue the greyboard on the book cover ( cotton canvas)
measure the margin between spine and book covers after you settle the book content between the covers. The gap is usually 7mm or 8 mm.
10. cut the book cover.
20mm width.
11. glue the cover
broadside first, long side second
press the corner
12. glue the cover with endpapers
endpapers may stretch a little. I cut off 2mm endpapers.
13. put wax paper between the cover and endpaper, press overnight
tutorial with Graham
15/08/2019
show Graham my book and animation demo.
1. book is good. I only made one copy. Graham suggested me to make another copy in case the book is broken or removed during the show. It is safer to have a replacement.
----I made another copy the next day.
2. animation is good. The second vegetable, Graham couldn’t tell what it exactly is, but he knows is one kind of vegetable.
---It is the carrot. Honestly, when I watch this scene, I also couldn’t tell it is the carrot, you can say it is ham or onion.
Graham recommended I draw a green leaf.
----I changed the carrot to lettuce.

Send the PDF file to Graham before the tutorial.
feedback:
1. The age of the old man. Graham thought the old man still die too young(82 yrs). If it was him, he would like to live more than 90.
---So I changed page 100. “52 years later” change to “62 years later”.
2. number is different. The number on page 30 is 1420062627, the next page when he uses the number to do the math, the number is 1420060600. why? If there is any mistake?
---No, when he uses the number to do the math, time has past 27 seconds.
3. How does the young man know people with a grey number should go to the sea and people with a red number can go to heaven?
---My mistake. Later I add the number 0 over people on the ads.
4. the speech bubbles are white, they are too poped out in some dark frames. You can change the background colour of the speech bubbles to make it not that obvious.
--In some really dark pictures, I change the bubbles to grey.

5. Last time when I have a tutorial with Karen, she said my text size is too big. So I shrink it down to 20pt. I ask Graham if it is ok now. Graham suggested maybe a little smaller. Try 16pt or 18pt.
20pt:
18pt:
16pt:
I chose 16pt.
5. choose the paper. 100gsm coated or 160gsm coated?
--160gsm coated.
6. Graham helped me with the text proofreading.
7. plan for next week:
① finish my final bookbinding next week.
② make the animation. Remake the sequence I have made in March. The ending part with a lot of hearts, Graham said it is too cliche. So I will change this part and remake this sequence with my new drawing style.
tutorial with Ben Branagan
31/07/2019
I show him all my drawings.
1. Ben thought now my drawings look like an animation, I should adjust the size of the images to set the reading speed for readers.
He recommended La Jetée ( a book by Chris Marker ), it uses different size pictures and blanks to adjust the pace when people read.
2. He recommended me to make a graphic novel, like Persepolis Graphic.
3. Think about where to put the text. Now I put the text in the picture. He said maybe put the text outside.
4. Ending. The story should end when the old man gets on the train, you don’t need to twist it. Otherwise, people may get confused.
---I explained why I choose this ending in my report.

book sample
13 August 2019
I made a book sample.
The scratch is so obvious on the cover.
Helen said it is because you print the black cover, it is easy to see on black cover.
I sprayed the matt varnish on the book cover trying to protect it from stretches. Matt varnish helped a little, but still not a very good solution.
I also thought about using a light colour book cover. But I still prefer the black one.
The front paper stretched a little when I glue it. Maybe I will cut off 1 or 2 mm before I glue it next time.
The board bend a little because I didn’t press it long enough. Usually, the book should be pressed overnight. As I need to use it for the tutorial, so I didn’t press overnight.
Pull strip pop-up sample
pop up book cover
I had thought about making a pull strip pop-up structure for the book cover. When the book is closed, the cover shows the front view of the young man, and the grey countdown is over his head. While the cover is opened, the pop-up structure will show the young man heads up and looks at the red countdown.
I tested this idea and found out it contains many crossed structures, which worries me because I am afraid the overlapped papers will get stuck. Therefore, I think about using this pop-up structure in the postcard or business card for the exhibition.

tutorial with Karen (10th July 2019)
1.
consider the name of the station (Heaven Station), because the station leads the people to heaven and hell, maybe choose a neutral word.
-- Afterlife station? Limbo?
2.
the people on the boat or train are in different ages, maybe they should be the same age. and human sizes are different now.
3.
the angle of the countdown on page 17&18.
4.
the font of “door of rebirth” on page 21\22\23 is not easy to read, recommend Trajan.
up--old, down--new
5.
the text on the pages should be smaller.
The font of the text you choose to use for texts ( Calibri) is easy to read and fit your story.
6.
the audience needs some simple texts to help them understand your story.
7.
Do people have the patience to read my story if there are a lot of texts on it?
-You need the texts to help them understand.
8.
design for the countdown
how to express the countdown is shifting quickly?
your current design works (up). or you can try ...(down)
9.
remake the circle around the beer
up--old, down--new
还有耐心吗
RCA Graduate Exhibition 2019
