Jason: How can you not master your oven? You just press some buttons and it's warm and toasty.

Zoey: Not this oven. This oven hates me...

Zoey: Either that or it's broken and i'm far to cheap to fix it.

Jason: The insurance company could sue you for damage to the property. As for the landlord, it would depend on the lease terms but you're probably fucked on that end too. The only way you'd probably get out of that is if your place for some reason doesn't have a fire alarm, smoke detector or fire extinguisher.

Jason: Are you texting me while your house is burning? I'm impressed by your ability to keep it together under pressure.

Zoey: No, the burning is actually forthcoming. I'm thinking about baking, and I'm just trying to weigh out the risks and rewards.

Zoey: I've mastered chocolate chip cookies, and they're freaking awesome. But I haven't mastered my oven...

fifty-two hours and twelve minutes. That - down to the minute - was how long it had taken Maya to get from her parent’s house out in Seattle to Zoey’s new place in – what was it again? Landford? Lanford – she checked the spelling on her GPS. The drive down from the city had been peaceful, but all Maya could think about doing was getting out of the retched car and back into the life of her best friend.  Maya pulled into the driveway utterly exhausted, but beaming nonetheless. Without even stopping to grab her purse, Maya charged out of the car and to the front door, banging her fist three times like she always did. “Zo!” She called out.

Zoey had been checking her phone like a crazy person. She kept wanting to text, but no, Maya was driving and reading a text could very well cause her to lose focus and crash. Zoey did not want that kind of thing on her conscience. 

It felt like forever since she had last seen her best friend in the flesh, and even then it had been under sad circumstances. She was determined that this time, it would all be happy. Zoey was in a good place, Maya was getting her fresh start. It would all be perfect. 

She startled at the sound of the fist at the door, only for her face to light up as soon as she heard the voice on the other side of the door. “Maya!” she yelled excited from the other side, her socked feet scrabbling on the hardwood floor in the haste to get to the door. “You’re early!” 

It didn’t matter. She immediately flung open the door, and all but barreled Maya into a bear hug. “You’re here!!”

“Ow—” Kelsey muttered to herself as she sat outside the studio in Westbrook, perching on the edge of the sidewalk to minimise obstruction to those walking down the street. The bandage around her wrist was covering a large scuff that came from falling off her bike a couple of days before, but she was yet to get it checked out. “Wow…” She was talking to herself and holding the injured wrist up to the light, wiggling her fingers slowly to see just how much it hurt. “Impressive.”

“That’s one way of putting it,” Zoey winced as she observed Kelsey’s injury. “I mean, it looks terrible, but how bad does it feel?”

A soft  laugh erupted from Cam’s lips. “No, I’m afraid that’s too specific. Specific maybe only to you,” he answered with a shrug and a smile. “However, if you’re also a weird mess of almosts, maybe we’d get somewhere. I’ve almost been class valedictorian, almost graduated college with honors, almost an Olympic competitor. Let’s not forget almost being a father at 21–now, that was exciting.”

Almost was a terrible word, in Zoey’s opinion, and she was warring between her instinct to be sympathetic and he instinct to be infinitely curious. So her response - a strangely inflected ‘oh’ - was a good mix of the two of them.

“TV show? I don’t have one. I don’t watch much television,” She shrugged “Hobbies? I like to cook and t knit. What about you? Any hobbies or TV shows?”

“Cooking? Really?” she asked excitedly. “I’m learning how to bake! I’m not very good at it, admittedly, but I’m coming around. I can mix chemicals like nobody’s business, but apparently flour and sugar are my weaknesses...”

She smiled nodding once at the female, “that sounds great I mean the chocolate was satisfying but you’re right about eating an actual meal.” Desi put the treat back into one of the pockets of her bag and zipped it up. “So what did you have in mind? Chinese? Pizza? your call.” She smiled again.

“Ugh, why must you make me choose!” she sighed with mock frustration. “Let’s do... pizza. A solid choice, and supremely difficult to get wrong...”

Isaac couldn’t stop smiling at his damn phone. It was like he was back in high school, grinning away about some stupid puppy-love crush. It’s Zoey, he had to remind himself. She was too important to him as a friend to risk moving into a relationship with her.  But that didn’t mean he had to avoid her all together.  “Text me where you’re at! I’ll come pick you up :)” He sent. Isaac grabbed his keys, gave Sully a big smooch, and set for the door. When he finally pulled up, Isaac rolled down the window and playfully called out to her: “how much for the night?”

She maybe owed Isaac her life. I mean, that was probably dramatic, but it was also 100% within the realm of possibility. Only was he bailing her out of what was possibly her stupid stunt to date, but his mere friendship meant more to him that he could possibly express. She managed to give him very vague directions: There’s a bar I think with a purple sign to my right but I can’t read it, and on my left is an old pawn shop with - not kidding - a prothetic leg in the window. She just hoped that was enough for him to go on.  

She was still looking at her phone when she heard a car pull up beside her. How much for the night? She startled, before letting out a little giggle of relief. “Oh, Isaac! Hey! Give me lasagna and pastries, and I’ll give you a whole week,” she grinned widely, coming forward to get into the car. “Thank you so much for picking me up!”

“I like your style, Zo. Cheesecake is the definite best option.”

“Except when it comes to actually baking it... I tried that one and the only good thing that happened was that the fireman who came to check up on me was really hot...”
