zara
At times, Zara got a little bit too curious, and a little bit too interested in other people’s business. She hadn’t even noticed how her eyes had been glued to an arguing couple, head tilting further and further to the side – until a presence by her side got her attention, and she quickly cleared her throat as she lifted her head back up. “Uh – I was just… you know, it just really sounded as if she was about to slap him. Didn’t want to miss the show.”
It was almost a force of habit, to cast her gaze over her shoulder to see which couple Zara was referring to. There was hardly an issue determining who it was, Zoie giving an almost pained look as they continued arguing. “OK, what’d he do? Come on, spill; I know you’ve been listening for the last ten minutes. Probably more,” she laughed as she looked back at her friend.
cameron
“You’re really not going to let this go, will you?”, she asked with a sigh, ice was pressed firmly into the knuckles of her left hand. “I said I was fine and the other person won’t be a bother again, so what does it really matter?”
“I will,” she spoke softly, falling into not only her nurse mode, but that of being a mother. “I just want to make sure you didn’t seriously hurt anything. I promise I’ll make it fast.”
nic
She was sweet, really sweet – so sweet that apparently even Nic couldn’t just brush Zoie off like she might have most other people. She’d long since given up associating with certain kinds of people, tired of fighting to prove she was nothing like them. “Honey, Nicky and the people he associates with are one in the same.” They all were. “You can’t trust one and not the other, it’s not how that world works. Maybe it’ll take you a while to see that, but you can’t have him without the rest of it, and neither can Noah.”
It was a fact that she had long since come to accept; that Nico and the rest of the Black Wolves were a package deal. She’d spent enough years of her life coming to realize that, but it never made the pill easier to swallow. Especially now with Noah in her life. “I think it’d be easier knowing that he trusts them,” but it wouldn’t when it came to her son. She didn’t even want to think of the day that would come when she let Nico take their son with him. “I just don’t want Noah thinking that what they do is right.” Which was the hard truth, for as much as she loved Nico, she didn’t want their son falling into that life.
hana
Hana couldn’t help but her ego being stroked by the compliment Zoie was saying about her lemon squares, as much as she loves sweet things lemon squares were her ultimate go to dessert for having a rough week or even year. It was all thanks to her grandmother for teaching her how to make it. “Oh stop you, you know you’re only saying that so I can continue making you things.”
“Oh no, I’m saying it because it’s very true. If me telling the truth happens to be rewarded with more baked goods, then I think that’s a win-win situation.”
ares
“Want to talk about it?” Not that he much wanted to, but the offer was there regardless. Ares watched her as he rested his chin on his hand. His own day was nothing to brag about, but they usually weren’t joyous in a law office that depended on defending usually guilty criminals. A smile appeared on his face at the comment, and his eyes flicked up to her own. “You thought it might be a bad idea?”
“And ruin the night? I think I’ll leave work talk for tomorrow,” when she was nursing the hangover that she knew she would likely have. It’d been too long since she’d come out for a night of simple fun, and if she were being honest, she most certainly needed it. "Not like that,” she quipped with a laugh, shifting on the stool as she faced him. “I was worried that you would’ve been angry.”
lauren
“I have too.” She never knew why, they didn’t bare anything symbolic in her life, but she’d always liked how whimsical they’d looked, dainty in a way most couldn’t. “You’re probably right, I feel like hydrangea’s are a more obvious choice but, I might suggest the lillies this time around.” Of course she could only ever suggest, give her expertise and hope that people either listened or allowed her to do what she was hired to do in the first place, but there was more truth to the term bridezilla than most believed. “Who knows if she’ll even choose either of them. —- What about you? Any life altering choices I can offer a third party opinion in?”
There was no real reason that Zoie knew anything about flowers, she certainly didn’t have any kind of green thumb. But she liked to come here, to see the flowers and pick out the good ones for some of the patients at the hospital. Learning the names simply came after visiting so often. “They’re delicate. Simple, but in a good way,” she smiled as she looked at the flowers, eyes drifting over the little bells. “Seems like most people want to go against good advice.” She was all too familiar with that. “Me? Oh, no. At least, not that I’m aware of. Just trying to brighten up some patient’s moods.”

Nicolas couldn’t believe her words, especially when she had said she was broken too. He couldn’t believe it because from the moment he had laid eyes on her to the moment he took her out on their laugh date, from their first conversation to their last argument she was perfect to him. He couldn’t see the brokenness or the sadness beneath everything she had been to him. He refused to even believe it now. “Stop.” His voice was quiet as he spoke. He didn’t want to hear this, he didn’t want to hear the sorry’s coming from her any longer. He was tired of fighting, he had always been tired of fighting. Although he was thankful she had finally told him, even after all this time and even with all the lies, he wanted to overcome that. He had yelled and then he promised he wouldn’t, especially not in front of their son. He was sure Zoie had raised Noah right in his absence and although Nicolas wasn’t the greatest of men, he would try to be there for the little boy and his mother. “We’re not… doing this anymore. No more sorry’s, not more explanations… Because I’m angry and I don’t want to be angry anymore. I don’t want to fight with you anymore, alright?” He wanted to leave it at that. If they needed to talk more, they’d do in private without the presence of their son and certainly not in the middle of the street. He was sure the neighbours already heard enough. His features softened, almost going sad at her next words. She’d told their son about him and truthfully, he was scared. He was sure it was good thing, maybe little lies in their, but he didn’t want the young boy to be disappointed, especially when it came to actually meeting him, not just seeing him from afar. He wanted to cry at her words, to just break down but he held himself up. “—-So what are we supposed to do now?”
The singular word held her at bay, prevented any more from forming on her own tongue. She’d spent nearly three years building up this moment in her head, and none of it had gone according to what she had imagined. With all the lies, the secrecy, the never going to see him, Zoie had always expected this moment to go much, much worse. She had anticipated the yelling, the blaming, the words that she had never wanted to hear from him be thrown at her. But this was uncharted territory, for the both of them. And he was right, trying to navigate this would be better done behind a closed door, where neither bystanders nor their son could hear what needed to be said. A hand lifted, brushing hair back before she was nodding to his words. There wasn’t much she could say to ease the anger Nico was feeling, and she knew that. It had been nearly three years since she’d seen him last, but it felt like so much longer. He was so familiar to her, and yet a complete mystery; she only wanted to say the right things, but she couldn’t comprehend what those could be. Admitting that she’d told Noah about him was what she had hoped would be the right thing. Stepping back from Nico, she shifted her gaze to the door of the store. Teeth chewed at the inside of her cheek, contemplating his question. Finally, after a moment, she was looking back at him, “Now ---- you can come meet your son.”
