A tó 

Van valahol, van valahol, valami valahol él. Jól hallom én, amint suhog valami lombos, lassu szél. Jól hallom én, valami forrás, egy nagy fa odvából ered, bukdosnak benne föl-le, föl-le fekete éger levelek. Van valahol, van valahol, valami lassu tó. Bukdosnak benne föl-le, föl-le korsók, millió, millió. Akár galambok szárnya néhol csobban az égen – bugyborékol a korsók szájától a tó. Jól hallom én, mint egyre másra, galambok szomjas szárnycsapása, tíz emelet magasban az önkívület, testből szakadt szív csobbanása – Én itt cserép-esőben ázom. S mérem a véraláfutáson, korsónak melyik volna jó. És drótozom, és drót a drótra, és hallom én, hogy felcsapódva csobog, csobog a tó.

The Lake

There is somewhere, there is somewhere, something somewhere lives. I can hear well as some rustling, slow, leafy wind is whistling. I can hear well as some spring starts trickling from the hollow of a big tree, black alder leaves are somersaulting up and down, up and down the surface. There is somewhere, there is somewhere some slow still water. Millions and millions of jugs are plunging up and down, up and down the surface. Just like the wings of doves splash in the sky here and there, the mouth of jugs makes the lake seethe. I can hear well as one after the other pigeons’ parched wings flutter, ten-storey high the ecstasy, a heart torn out of body splashes - Here I’m soaking in a rain of crocks. And I’m measuring the black-and-blue spots, which one would fit for a jug. And I’m binding it with wire, and wire on wire, and I can hear that splashing higher the lake is gurgling and purling.

Milyen lesz az a visszaröpülés, amiről csak hasonlatok beszélnek, olyanfélék, hogy oltár, szentély, kézfogás, visszatérés, ölelés, fűben, fák alatt megterített asztal, hol nincs első és nincs utolsó vendég, végül is milyen lesz, milyen lesz e nyitott szárnyú emelkedő zuhanás, visszahullás a fókusz lángoló közös fészkébe? - nem tudom, és mégis, hogyha valamit tudok, hát ezt tudom, e forró folyosót, e nyílegyenes labirintust, melyben mind tömöttebb és mind tömöttebb és egyre szabadabb a tény, hogy röpülünk.   Pilinszky János

What it will feel like to fly back can be expressed with similes only, such as an altar, a sanctuary, shaking hands, coming back, embracing, a festive board in the grass shadowed by trees, where the first guest doesn’t outrank the last one, what will it feel like in the end, what will this rising fall with spread wings be like, falling back into the blazing common nest of the focus? – I don’t know, and still, if at all there’s something I know, I do know it, this burning-hot corridor, this straight labyrinth, in which more and more compact and freer than ever is the fact that we are flying.   Pilinszky János
