So! New trailer! New game!! New designs!!! The game looks incredible from what we can see, I’m legitimately so so excited for Elsewhere. We only see 4 characters in this trailer, but all of them have completely new sprites and redesigns. The original sprites are well over a decade old and honestly show it, but I want to compare the new sprites with them.
A lot of the changes with him are seen in the others too. He has a more defined face, both in features and in shape. His hair actually looks more like hair now, the sketchy lines inside actually flow the way they should as hair. The shape is much better, more puffy and messy and just like hair. He’s lost his five head, helps to make his face look more long and angular instead of the weird shape it was before. He looks much more expressive too, and everyone has shading now!
I don’t wanna talk about clothes too much, but Wilson’s now sporting a coat over his waistcoat, red gloves and even a cravat gives him a more put together feel. And his weird arms are finally gone!
Willow looks so much better. Shes lost that weird heart shape the top of her head made and instead the hair has a lot more volume. Like Wilson the linework does a much better job at looking like hair instead of just vague scribbles. Her face looks much more distinct from Wilson’s now. I only just now noticed Willow didn’t have eyelashes before, but now she does.
Her new outfit is really interesting. A sorta of loose dress with a red shawl, with some sort of red brooch. It reminds me a lot of her Victorian skin, but much cleaner. She doesn’t look as distinguished as Wilson but that suits her perfectly.
The texture in her hair looks fantastic. It does a much better job of getting across that frizzy look, particularly on her head. Like Willow is also just looks much fuller. Her nose has a more distinct bridge (also seen with the previous two) but I think most interesting is how she sort of has an air of being older, especially in the animations. All of them feel a little older frankly, I’m unsure if that’s intentional or a result of the new style, but it’s very interesting especially with Wendy. She almost feels like she’s finally hitting her teens here.
The colors of her outfit have actually swapped, with a red top and white skirt. It’s very poofy, but with the dress and jacket it feels more refined than her old design of a blouse and skirt. Adds onto the idea that maybe she’s a little older, her old outfit felt like something a little girl would wear, but this feels more like something someone older would wear. She also has a red brooch like Willow, but I don’t know if that means anything.
Abby actually looks to be the exact same sprite unlike everyone else. Given there’s very little to update though it makes sense. There are some changes, namely she has a lot more texture and shading to match the new style. The dark circles under her eyes are softer like on Wendy, and her lashes are also messier like her sisters. Overall not much to say, but interesting that some sprites are actually reused, just updated to match the new more painterly style.
WX is honestly the hardest to get a look at their sprite but they might be the most drastic change, since their actual body is changed instead of getting a new outfit. Like everyone else their features are much more defined, the top of their head now sports that angled bit seen in more recent art. It also has a distinct rim and the top of their head now has two raised lines going down it. The bolts on their face as way more distinct, like everyone else they’re much more detailed.
So their chest cavity now has a keyhole. Also it like, exists instead of the vague screws that were there before. Their shoulders have an extra pauldron looking thing. If you look at the animation, you can see they have big bolts on their feet now too. Judging from what little I can see off the sprite, their hands might finally have lines for articulation too. Overall they look much fancier, the WX we know has a body solely focused on practicality without any ornamentation, so seeing that is very interesting.
Overall I adore these new designs, I’m really into the return to gothic horror. They all have that Victorian feel that I honestly love. I’m really excited to see what the other characters look like, and who all is gonna get in. Webber is gonna look amazing…
