     nightmares  ultimately  begin  with  us,  with  the  mind.  it’s  a  part  of  us  we  wish  to  keep  sealed,  untouched,  quentin  was  no  different.  no  matter  how  much  someone  runs  away  from  it,  sooner  or  later,  they  too  need  to  feel  the  sweet  embrace  of  slumber;  quentin  began  to  doze  off  in  the  comfort  of  his  bedroom  whilst  staring  at  the  mangled  teddy  bear.

     in  the  quiet  of  night  where  crickets  became  silent  and  the  wind  whispered  no  more,  a  heavy  voice  surfaced  from  the  teddy  bear,  just  sitting  on  top  of  quentin’s  T.V,  a  voice  deep  and  brimming  with  nefarious  desires.  ❝   remember  me,  bitch?    ❞  yet  the  bear  remained  still,  unmoving,  an  object  that  would  forever  immortalize  quentin’s  image  in  the  surface  of  its  reflective,  beady  eyes.

There was a time, not too very long ago, where Quentin would’ve welcomed the idea of sleep after a long day. That all changed when his nightmares turned into something much more sinister during his final year of high school. It had been over a year since then, but sleep still didn’t come easy to him like it used to. Even after being under the impression that he’d escaped the dream demon, there was never telling what was merely a nightmare stemming from his fears and anxieties and what was real. Too often did he wake up in a cold sweat after experiencing a nightmare of him. Of Freddy. The what if was always there, lingering in the back of his mind. What if the nightmares became real again? What if Freddy came back to finish what he started? Sleep couldn’t be avoided forever, and soon Quentin found himself drifting off in the quiet of the night. It was when the teddy bear, perched on top of his television, had spoken in a familiar and menacing voice that he immediately shot up into a sitting position on his bed. His gaze, tired yet alert, was locked on the mangled bear which remained perfectly still during the seconds that ticked by. Another nightmare. That’s all it was. At least, that was what he told himself as he got out from his bed, grabbed the bear, and walked over to his closet to irritably pull open the door. “Get out of my head,” he mumbled to himself before tossing the stuffed animal in.

     Cornered with no way out, Quentin knew that he’d lost the trial. It had been his own fault for coming into the basement, his goal to search the chest in a last-ditch-effort to find a medkit. The Deathslinger, Caleb, knew that he had won too. He had a broad grin on his face and emitted a low, somewhat menacing laugh while closing in on him. Back pressed against the wall and fingernails digging into the flesh of his palms, Quentin shut his eyes tightly to brace for the impact of his spiked gun. This was gonna hurt.

     He could feel him looming above him, knowing that his weapon was raised and about to hit him full force with the killing blow. But instead, he was met with a warm, splattering wetness against his face. Grey eyes opened to see what had happened, and immediately he understood why the pain hadn’t hit him, or why his vision hadn’t gone black. Jake had moved to stand in front of him, the long spike piercing straight through his chest and dripping with blood. He’d seen people killed in front of him many times now, but it didn’t seem to get easier. It was hard to watch the people he care about suffer so greatly, and Quentin couldn’t help but feel guilty. He should’ve been the one receiving the punishment. He was the one who fucked up--not Jake.

     For a few seconds, Quentin was frozen, staring wide-eyed at his now fatally injured friend in front of him. He almost wished that Jake would return to his old ways; his ways of only caring about self preservation so that he wouldn’t feel the need to come back for him. Alas, he also knew he would be sad to lose that bond he’d developed over quite some time with him. I’ll be back for you, he thought before making a run towards the stairs and being careful not to slip in the blood that coated the floor. He took two steps at a time, trying to put as much distance between them as quickly as possible. Caleb was still busy with Jake, but he knew that it wouldn’t be for long. He’d leave him there as a broken, barely breathing heap on the floor and come for him. It would be close and risky, but maybe there was still a chance that he could come back and save him.

     “Jake? Jake, try to hold on,” Quentin spoke into his mic. “One of the exits is open. We can both make it out of here if we act fast.” He paused for a moment, glancing behind him to make sure he wasn’t being followed before continuing to speak. “You shouldn’t have come for me, idiot.” Despite his disappointment, they were words that were spoken in a fond manner. His tone, which was on the softer side, made it obvious that despite the scolding, he was grateful that he cared enough to come back at all.

     There was the occasional night where Quentin would sleep without nightmares, but many more where he’d jolt awake and need to take a minute to get his heartrate back to normal and calm himself down enough to go back to sleep. And then there were the nights where--when he was really tired and having a nightmare of Freddy--he would start moving in his sleep, much like what had happened when Freddy was after him for real. His victims could get unintentionally violent as they tried to fight him off in the dream world while in reality, they were fighting back against someone trying to help.

     Tonight was one of those ones; the worst kind. It took Quentin a minute to actually wake up and realize that he wasn’t in danger, that the person in front of him was Steve, not Freddy. Though it was dark, he could see the shimmer of blood running down his boyfriends chin and he realized right then and there that he’d accidentally hurt him. During his nightmare, Steve must’ve been trying to help him and paid the price for it.

     “Shit...” Quentin mumbled, his tone apologetic and yet on the quiet side from being out of breath. Even if it was a minor wound, he never wanted to be the person to bring him pain--whether it be physical or emotional. “I’m so sorry, Steve. I’m so sorry,” he repeated, his hand lifting to cup Steve’s face and gently brush his thumb along his chin to swipe at the blood. “Are you okay?”

     The hour was late, the windows and doors locked up (made especially certain by Jake) and the curtains were drawn. The only light in the room was the soft illumination caused by the TV, which Quentin and Jake sat in front of on a couch. Blankets covered both of them, trapping in the warmth and fighting the cold air that came with the season of fall. Occasionally, Quentin would find his eyelids feeling heavy and would struggle to keep them open despite wanting to find out what happened next in the movie. Sometimes, he thought he’d wake up to find himself back at the realm in front of the campfire. It was hard to believe that he was actually here, on a comfortable couch, under warm blankets and watching TV with Jake; who wasn’t just a friend, but a brother.

     After shifting a little and changing his position on the couch, Quentin found himself at least a little more awake. The same couldn’t be said for Jake. After a few minutes, the older male had slumped against him, head against his shoulder and his breathing a little deeper than usual but still steady. Better not move, Quentin reminded himself, knowing that Jake was a light sleeper. It was sweet, really, that he felt comfortable enough with him to fall asleep against him. It probably wasn’t fully intentional, but he’d done it before in the realm anyway and it was one of the only times he was able to actually make physical contact with Jake without him getting upset.

     Gently, Quentin rested his cheek against the top of Jake’s head while his gaze remained trained on the TV screen. He only moved briefly to adjust the blanket over his friend and ensure that he was still warm and covered, and then he was back into position. Seconds ticked by and turned into minutes, and soon Quentin had given up fighting sleep and allowed his eyes to fall shut. Jake always had a way of fighting his nightmares with his singing, and being close to people tended to help a little sometimes too. He hoped that in return, he could offer some form of comfort to ease Jake’s mind and the paranoia that tended to overwhelm him. Maybe, just maybe, they would sleep the whole night through.

——————  JAKE WASN’T A NORMAL PERSON by any means, he knew. The average individual would rather spend time inside with their phones and tvs and computers ; the former of the equation was more prone to nature and its natural accommodations: rivers, rocks, leaves, trees – all of it spoke volume to him that no internet browser history at 2 AM could ever. The others had slowly gained some leverage in grabbing him back into modern day, granting him a phone and computer of his own, playing video games with him, and spending time relearning the basics of a cafe to improve his social anxieties, but Jake…could never let go of his rooted love for everything archaic. Sometimes he wondered if that made him…annoying rather than abnormal – probably. It wasn’t as if he was the ONLY person on the planet who felt that way. After all, millions went out of their way to go off the grid just like him, but…the average person didn’t act that way… 

      The stone held a weight to him, but he ignored the memories that came with the stone for now. Opting instead to place it gently upon nearest surface to keep it safe from potential harm ; he knew he’d drop it eventually if he focused too much on conversation, much to his own chagrin and the amusement of the other. ❝ I didn’t think you’d actually eat it that time… It shocked me more than disappointed me… ❞ The utterance of disbelief had been hilarious to some, but, to Jake, who’d found that rare rock and was JOKING at the time about shoving it down Quentin’s throat, it was a punch to the gut to hear it was gone forever. Irises fluttered to the new one in bemusement about how he’d found one, but – ❝ You know me well… ❞ – Quentin wouldn’t just buy him something from the store ; the younger had hunted this down, which meant more than any store bought beautified gem could in comparison. 

       The day he’d seen the Entity release them from its grasp, he felt like his life would be ending. The entire premise of his entering the realm being due to his own death in life from that fallen tree ; the fact the dimension collapsed meant to him that it was time to accept death and close his eyes…and yet…his ears rang and his eyelids peeled back in a haze, bright and blinding enough to cause a cry to dryly croak from his withered throat at the shredding agony. It meant he was alive, though – astonishing. 

       Distant smile traced his features as index’s finger pad traced over stone, grounding himself back to the present. ❝ Where’d you find it? ❞

     For a moment, Quentin wished that he’d taken his phone out of his pocket to take a picture of Jake smiling. It was so rare to see such a real, big smile like that on him, and he honestly hadn’t been expecting it at all. Nobody would probably even believe him if he told them, but at least he knew. “I didn’t actually plan on eating it. It was kind of a spur of the moment thing and I’d be lying if I said I didn’t regret it.” He shrugged, watching Jake trace his finger atop the stone.

     “I found it down by the river,” Quentin began to explain while he moved to lean against the arm of the couch. “I was just skipping rocks and happened to see it beside one of the ones I was picking up. Funny how that works, isn’t it? I spent a long time trying to find a heart shaped rock for you. And the one time I wasn’t actively looking was when it appeared to me.” It’d been a lucky find to stumble across a rock as closely shaped as that one. It wasn’t perfect, obviously, since it was still a rock that wasn’t polished up and cut to look a certain way; but it was as close to it as an untouched river rock could get.

     “Yeah, I guess you could say I know you pretty well by now.” Quentin had spent years with Jake in the realm and had come a long way with him. He remembered the early trials, when he was brand new and trying to figure everything out. Jake taught him a lot of what he knew, including how to repair generators and bite his sleeve to silence himself, but he would also sometimes leave him for dead; at least until he got to know him better and begrudgingly accept that he cared for him. That point was proven time and time again when Jake would return for him during the end of the trial, when all hope seemed to be lost and Quentin had already accepted that he would die. The verbal admittance, on the other hand, took some pushing and prodding to get him to that point. “I’m glad you like it. Do I get a hug now?” He asked, a devilish grin on his face. He knew the answer already; a blunt no.

   she listens with great interest ━ allowing the gears in her head to turn, wanting to understand the situation a bit better. it wasn’t like rikku hadn’t seen the news, people had been DYING lately. weird reports, stuff that was out of the norm. at the sight of the scratches she feels a little chill run up her spine. it makes her afraid because she’d had nightmares ━ vague ones lately, she hadn’t actually SEEN the person chasing her. she always woke up too soon but woke feeling like she had just been out for an actual run and it … felt off. there was no other way she could say it. it felt too r e a l.

“ hey i wouldn’t leave someone if it was life or … ! wait, wait, wait ━ “ suddenly she’s being hit with the memory of SOMETHING. the sound of metallic tapping she heard in one of those vague dreams. the shadow of someone with knife like fingers and it causes goosebumps to run up her arms, she tries to play it off by rubbing her hands over her skin. but they stayed and she eyes down a bit, avoiding his gaze and speaking in a slightly quieter tone. “ you said he has … KNIVES on his hand? ”

it HAD to be a coincidence. but she was still thinking about the scratches on his body ━ they were real and tangible. everyone had woke up with a few nail marks from scratching themselves in their sleep. that was just a normal thing. but those didn’t look like a subconscious bug biting and itching in the sleep kinda’ scenario. they looked deliberate ━ which to her meant that quentin was either hurting himself OR he wasn’t making this up.  

     The sudden shift of mood was obvious while Rikku’s sentence trailed off. She’d been pretty upbeat and pretty positive about the whole thing, ready to hear him out and ask questions; so why the sudden silence, quiet tone and lack of eye contact? Quentin crossed his arms, head tilted ever so slightly to the side as he watched her carefully.

     What the hell had happened? Had he said something wrong? Maybe she’d just realized how crazy it all sounded and was looking for a way out--and honestly, Quentin wouldn’t blame her for it. In fact, maybe it was for the best. He could fight as hard as he could, try to stay awake by any means necessary, but there was no telling how long he’d be alive for. Until he could figure out some options, he was merely prolonging the inevitable.

     “Yeah, he wears this glove that has knives on them,” Quentin confirmed with a slow nod of his head, his expression of confusion shifting to that of worry when an idea struck him. She seemed to have reacted to the mention of knives on his hand, which suddenly had him fearing the worst for her. What if she saw Freddy? Perhaps he was just paranoid and too used to losing people around him, forcing his mind to go to the worst case scenario. He’d lost all his friends now, and even though he didn’t really know Rikku all that well yet, he would hate to see her die to someone like Freddy. “Tell me you haven’t been having nightmares of him too.”

     Surviving a trial had both its advantages and disadvantages. On one hand, surviving meant you didn’t feel the entity feeding off of your hope and essentially draining part of your soul from your body. On the other hand, surviving also meant not being ‘reset’ and instead keeping the wounds that were inflicted during the trial--like what Narcissa was experiencing now. It made it all the more difficult to be pulled into another trial while still recovering from the previous one.

     After noticing Narcissa fussing over one of her injuries from yesterday’s trial, Quentin left his place at the log he was sitting on and moved to kneel down in front of her. He hadn’t been so lucky to survive the last trial, but he wanted to help those who did however he could. “Mind if I take a look?” He asked, eyes briefly meeting her gaze before focusing on the injury along the inside of her arm.

     Carefully and cautiously, just in case she flinched, he reached out to gently grip her wrist and have a better look at the cut. Indeed, it was healing, but it could easily open back up if she wasn’t careful. He wasn’t as experienced at Claudette was in the medical field, but he’d learned quite a bit from her during his time spent here, and he felt it was something he could actually be useful with during trials. He felt awful for the times he’d dozed off on a generator, or had been too tired to notice bear traps. “You should keep it covered to make sure it doesn’t get infected. I have disinfectant and gauze if you need it.”

     The night was clear and cloudless, the moon and stars out and easily seen above them. It was weird to think that not too long ago, they were all up there--living there in space. They’d heard and read about the ground and about what it was like to be on Earth, but now they were actually here and experiencing it for the first time. It had it’s beauty, but there was a lot of death and destruction taking place which left for little time to marvel over the small things.

    It was his turn to be one of the people on watch for the night, to make sure that grounders didn’t make an attack on their camp. Most of the others had retreated into their tents and gone to sleep for the night, and the fire that they’d made was no longer burning as brightly. Quentin’s gaze was trained on the expanse of darkness before him, and Bellamy was close by to keep watch too. He didn’t know him all too well yet, but he could tell that he was a good leader--though perhaps a little impulsive at times. Still, people respected him and he helped keep things in order, and order was exactly what this place needed. It had all gotten out of hand so quickly.

     A snapping of a twig had caught Quentin’s attention, gaze flitting to the location in which he thought he’d heard it. Though it was hard to see, his vision had gradually adjusted to the darkness and he could somewhat see something move in the woods. “--Shit,” he cursed under his breath, posture straightening up a little. “Yeah, I saw it.” His gun was raised but he wouldn’t shoot unless absolutely necessary. It was merely a precaution, and he’d like to conserve ammo if he could. For all they knew, it could be a deer or other woodland creature skulking around. “What do we do, Bellamy?” Truly, he didn’t know. Was it best to call out to them to let them know they’d been spotted? Hold their ground and wait? Go investigate? “It seems dangerous to go out there when we can’t see anything.”

     The question had been an unexpected one, prompted shortly after he’d emerged from the basement with a medkit held in one of his hands. Jake was on the generator in the shack, focused on completing the task as efficiently as possible to no surprise. “Is that supposed to be an insult, or...?” Quentin asked while approaching the generator and kneeling down on the side of it that had exposed wires. The spark of it, paired with the occasional small shock one could get if they weren’t careful enough, helped to better keep him awake.

     “Genuinely curious. Because if it’s something you’re calling me fondly, then...Okay, I guess. It’s an odd one, but go for it,” Quentin continued, sparing Jake only a glance before his attention was back on the wires. Truthfully, he knew that Jake was a bit of an oddball. He lacked social etiquette and had his own, unique ways of showing people that he cared about them. Over time, Quentin had grown used to his blunt ways of speaking and the different, small things he’d do to show he cared. He did care, it just wasn’t as obvious to pick up on. “If you’re just trying to be an asshole, then...I’ll accept it like I usually do, but probably make up one for you too either way. You can be the forest gremlin.” At that, Quentin couldn’t help but grin a little.

     Another night, another nightmare. Even after escaping the realm, sleep didn’t come easy for Quentin. His fears and his subconscious would result in him dreaming about Freddy, which in turn made him want to continue avoiding sleep. Freddy wasn’t actually there in his mind to torment him, but he could never tell if it was real or not; if he was having just a normal PTSD nightmare or if Freddy had actually returned to finish what he started. What if one day he really did come back? He’d woken up in a sweat with Steve shaking him gently by the shoulders, and though he was grateful that he had him there to help, he felt awful for all the times he’d interrupted his sleep due to his own issues.

     A few minutes had passed and while Quentin had gone into the kitchen to make coffee at 2 in the morning, half dressed with a blanket over his shoulders, Steve apparently had another idea in mind. Turning around after hearing him speak up about the bath, he left his spot at the counter and instead moved with sluggish, tired movements to stand in front of his boyfriend. “Sorry for all of...this,” he apologized, his arms wrapping around Steve’s waist with the blanket while his forehead rested against his shoulder in an apologetic manner. “That’s nice of you, but you seriously don’t have to keep on helping me every time this happens. I’d have knocked me the fuck out by now if I were you,” he teased, though he knew all too well that he would go to the ends of the earth and back to make sure that Steve was alright. “We’re back in the real world now and you deserve to actually sleep for once.”

     Time seemed to pass quickly while talking to Steve, whether they were talking about something a little more personal or just goofing off and talking about mindless, senseless things that people would probably make fun of them for. On the edge of the pool where they sat, legs in the water, Quentin was gazing down at the lights illuminating the water. It was still warm from the sun beating down on it all day. He’d been too distracted to notice Steve looking over at him, but the question that soon followed grabbed his attention.

     Lifting his head and angling his body slightly to turn to Steve, he arched a brow questioningly. “You’re asking me?” Quentin couldn’t help but grin a little. It was oddly cute that he didn’t bother just going for it; he wanted to make sure it was okay first. Moving closer, Quentin lifted one of his hands to settle it on the back of Steve’s neck. It was funny to think that mister popular was into him of all people, but he also knew that Steve wasn’t that same, douchebag guy he used to be.

     Gently dragging Steve closer, the distance between them closing, he paused with their lips just mere inches apart. Did he want to kiss him? Absolutely, but maybe after he did this first. After all, he didn’t want to make it too easy for him. Moving his hands to the other male’s upper body, he already began to laugh as he gave him a swift shove to push him right off the ledge and into the water.

——————  EVEN LEFT IN THE PRESENCE of Frank meant something akin to torment would take place ; it wasn’t as if he was intimidating on his own, having heard the constant berating about his age and stature, but that wasn’t what the teen utilized in causing fear to spread in his opponents ; no, he preferred to toy with them, much like Myers did on his expansions – though Frank had more tongue to his methods. What a disappointment to meet the guy from the franchise that both boosted you and ruined you as a child to have nothing but his intimidation factor to look at. Then again, maybe that’s why Frank also admired the buffoon ; his methods were comical, even if he didn’t care about the actors in the play. 

      ❝ You’ve got nothing but time on your…legs to lose, right? ❞ As if to mock him further, he denied the hand their comfort of grip by pressing down to showcase his power over him ; the Entity chose him for a reason, after all, to grant them both hope and despair for its feast. The lie wouldn’t spare him any, even if Frank cared enough to attempt to read his expression to know ; Legion didn’t need approval from overzealous survivors who prided themselves on capacity to suppress fear. All he needed was a little bit of fun to avoid resorting to finishing matches in a heartbeat to get back to the lodge for a drink or smoke.

       Granted, he might give the brat some credit for the display of courage with him so ready to divulge into psychology on him – well, he’ll see if he wants to by the end of their session of morality. ❝ What do you mean? ❞ Sarcasm seeped out, hand gesturing with taunting delight. ❝ You’re already sitting this one out. ❞ No time to let him react, he’d bend down forward and press a finger down to the younger’s forehead, pushing his noggin back with a sickening amount of g-force. ❝ This is a game of probing that little brain of yours for all its worth with some…simple questions. ❞

     Despite Quentin’s efforts to prevent Frank from causing further pain to his leg, he knew that the force of pushing down would overcome his attempts of holding him back. That didn’t stop him from trying, but it only resulted in his fingers being caught between his leg and Frank’s boot. It was only for a moment, as he quickly pulled them out from under it. It allowed him no relief from the pain shooting up and down his leg where the bone was broken, and Quentin found himself wishing that Frank was a little more level with him so that he could deck him in the face. “--FUCK,” he yelped, hands meeting with the icy cold snow and gripping at the grass buried beneath it. The pain was enough to make him feel a little dizzy and unwell, his jaw clenching to try to better fight through it. It was something Jake had taught him--a way to both be quieter and cope with it.

     If he’d had time to react, Quentin would’ve rolled his eyes at Frank’s joke about sitting this one out. Dying was no fun, and he hated the feeling of his soul being drained and the feeling of dread that tended to linger for a while after, but part of him wished that Frank would just get it over with already. On the other hand, he wanted to buy his teammate as much time as possible to make it out of here safely. A finger was pressed against his forehead, forcing his head back with a surprising amount of power. With the way Frank was leaning over, there was a chance that he could’ve punched him, but he instead lifted his hand to smack his hand away from his face.

     “Fine,” Quentin answered with an annoyed sigh. “Then stop fucking hurting me and start asking. Maybe I’ll have answers.” He probably did, but that didn’t mean he’d be willing to answer them. If they had anything to do with the whereabouts of his teammate, he’d rather die than sell them out. Alas, there was no telling what kind of tricks Frank had up his sleeve or what kind of information he was trying to extract.
