We need to make this phrase happen
Of course the eight minute song with the motorik beat is going to be the one on the record I want to play on repeat
A few jobs back, I was scouting for a "mansion under construction" for a movie. The main character was supposed to be as rich and powerful as they come, and the house being built had to reflect the latest and greatest in contemporary design.
I ended up finding the greatest number of options in the hills over West Hollywood, an extraordinarily expensive zip code where it seems like every third address is a new home being built from scratch.
As I was touring a site with a contractor, I commented that he must have a difficult job, because what's ultra contemporary in architecture and design changes so frequently, quickly rendering what was previously hip a dated feel.
"Ten years," he replied. I asked what he meant. "Ten years, then a house is too outdated and embarrassing for these rich people to show their friends. So they have us tear it down and build them a new one. Every ten years, like clockwork."
I asked if he'd ever had to tear down a house he'd built. "Oh yeah, all the time," he said. "It's crazy, I know, but hey - at least I never stop working."
Neurosis have returned and all is right in the world as far as I am concerned.
On Repeat
Liking Fucked Up is accepting that every couple of releases Mike Haliechuk and Jonah Falco get obsessed with some new thing and make a whole record or EP on it.
I appreciated Dose Your Dreams from the start because I'm entirely in on the project of Fucked Up making a Primal Scream record. But something about “Joy Stops Time” got to me in an entirely different way than the rest of the album. It's an almost eight minute epic with a gurgling synth and simple drum machine beat with Damien Abraham trading off vocals with Lido Pimienta and Mary Margaret O’Hara (!!!). Is it a love story? Is it about overcoming grief? I don't know, but when I play it I can't listen just once. It's at least three plays through every time.
On repeat
MIT is a side project (replacement?) from 2/3rds of the great Vision 3D

I did not plan on buying this many records this year and in fact it was a bit surprising when I ran the numbers. Just as with last year, digital releases surpassed CD purchases (based on availability, not preference).
A few notes:
Thank you to Peter for recommending me the New Eves record. I might have found it on my own, but always great to have a key recommendation, especially when it becomes my favorite of the year
All “new to me” other than the New Eves this year: Abdomen, Art d'Ecco, Hannah Cohen, Dutch Interior, Matthew Herbert & Momoko Gill, Host Family, Hammydown, Heet Deth, Golamb, Guiltless, Index for Working Musik, IRKED, Motorbike, Ninajirachi, PARKiNG, Plasma, Prewn, Replica Watch, The Cords, The Snares, total wife, Water Damage, Winter and Wren
MIT - The Male Idiot Theory is not entirely new, as it's two thirds of the great VISION 3D, but was a pleasant surprise to come across
I never expected there to be another Stereolab record in the world
It only made the honorable mentions below, but “is” made me want to listen to My Morning Jacket again
I know it's not a record, but the Ty Segall Tiny Desk is one of the things I listened to most this year
It's funny to me that the eight song Swans record is basically the same length as the thirty song Jeff Tweedy record
This year I/my wife and I finally got to see Judy & the Jerks, Colleen Green, NIN, Shudder to Think and Neko Case live.
I likely never again get as close to Paul Quattrone's kick drum as I did this year
