Kodansha launches Kodansha Studios to Adapt Manga into Live-Action
I don't think I've ever seen someone talk about how incredibly sad Akira is. And even then, they either focus solely on The Espers and Akira or on Tetsuo.
Both The Espers + Akira and Tetsuo were orphaned, but at least Tetsuo had the pleasure of going to an actual orphanage over being the labrats that Akira and The Espers became.
Although Tetsuo got to grow up in a more open environment than the other children, he was severely bullied and mocked for being weak. This bullying didn't stop even when he got to grow up (which due to Akira trascending and his body being dissected along with The Espers being stuck in children's bodies, they weren't able to ever really grow up or mentally mature), which turned Tetsuo into an insecure loose cannon that hides behind his aggression.
The Espers had an idea of Akira and the power he possessed, Tetsuo did not. When Tetsuo gained his powers, he hallucinated a man he'd never met with knowledge that wasn't his own. The government wouldn't even tell him what was happening to him. The Espers at least had some context as they grew up being experimented on with him. Akira was their friend and they watched what happened to him. The Espers were knowing and grieving, Tetsuo was confused and scared.
I also think how terrified Tetsuo had to have been isn't a talked on subject enough. He was only 15 when his entire life turned upside down when he gained the powers he had. He was miserable, (let's be real) drug addicted, and orphaned. He had nobody to lean on because his best friend felt like a trap to him.
The only people who knew what was going on were either trying to experiment on him with no regard for his emotions or were scared children trying to reason with him. When an amoeba gains the power and ability of a human, that amoeba isn't going to accept and understand. And when the amoeba has been pushed around and is far from mature enough for most things let alone the powers of a human, you can't get mad at the amoeba for taking advantage of that power.
But people need to remember the Espers were scared too. As much as they understood and as much as they missed Akira, they were still children. At heart and (mostly) at body, The Espers were children.
I will never understand why some people worry more about Tetsuo being the 'antagonist' or hating on The Espers. The main point of Akira is that the government DID do that. They WOULD do that. From the third world war to the police brutality and even all the way to the main theme of Akira, the government is at fault. One of the English dubs has a like that encapsulates what the movie is: 'Closing the lid of the Pandora's box they themself had opened'. The point of Akira is the government is covering up the abhorrent things they are doing and stomping on anyone who protests or fights against oppression. With a movie that aged like wine and a message that hasn't aged at all, it really confuses me when people demonize the CHILDREN.
