Sometimes you get what you need when you need it
Often that happens when talking to Wayne Coyne of the Flaming Lips.
There was the time he resuscitated Fiona after she passed out at the Greek waiting for Ween to open for the Lips. He was right there backstage when she came to at the medic tent, wizardly, a contributing factor in me declaring B.S.E. on Jambase.
And yesterday I spoke to him for a half-hour or so, just a phoner from my desk at home, and we ended up talking about the universal struggle, as he called it, a conversation that started with him asking how things are at the Seattle Times. I was honest, used the word "grim," and from there we delved into the question of free will versus fate. We got to the idea that sometimes slavery is voluntary, that "free will is not any fun. We all wanna be a slave to something." Also "the invisible reality"--the magical spot we can get to when we're thinking and doing two separate things. Most of Embryonic was created that way, which he wasn't proud of, but there it is, a terrific album. He drew a doodle while we talked, the product of exactly the kind of mind-split we were discussing.
There was little conclusion reached other than this question is the motherfucker of life.
"I do know this though--a determined person can beat a lazy person."
An abridged Q&A comes Sept 24 at Seattle Times.
