okay I need to vent for a bit because it makes me angry and I dont think confronting the people I am angry at will help
I'm really, really annoyed at people who say Pink is useless and disappointing as a secret boss.
I understand her not being what players expected for a secret boss: she's subversive. I also understand people not liking her: everyone has different tastes in characters! And that's okay.
But her being a secret boss, especially in this chapter, is so important, and it pisses me off to see people say she "lacks aura". Yeah, right. They say that because she's girly. She's pink, cute, she has a dating sim mechanic and a Hatsune Miku song. (And she's a girl.) And to a certain type of people, this is a bad thing, somehow! I'd say they hate fun, but I know the real reason: misogyny.
As for her being "unimportant", I'm pretty sure I can come up with 5 different elements about her that make her very important, lore-wise and thematically.
On top of my head:
1) Her parallel with Kris and the Soul
"but liera we already have spamton for this!!"
Well Kyle, shitty argument but I'm glad you brought that up.
Pink doesn't serve the same purpose as Spamton at all. Rather, she's a parallel. They even have the same colors of pink and yellow/gold.
Where Kris saw in Spamton and the things/people controlling him, a worse, terrifying version of them and the player, a sort of grim foreshadowing of how they could end up, Pink and Mew Mew show them a different outcome, one where an entity posseses a body while respecting the body's autonomy and cooperating with them. Pink and Mew Mew struggle, but they eventually come to an understanding, while Spamton only saw his strings as things to be cut down, but he couldn't survive without them. (I know he did live actually but you get what I mean...)
And the chapters these two are located are incredibly important. Spamton is in chapter 2, the chapter everyone actually started to understand that our control over them was not actually something necessarily good for Kris. (It was kinda the era where everyone had those "player is evil" theories...)
And more importantly, it is the chapter where you can start the weird route, which makes the Spamton boss fight mandatory. Themes of the player's control in the weird route are major, so it makes sense. Meanwhile, on the normal route, the fight is optional, because our control over Kris, while still an important element, is not AS central to the normal route. Having what happened to Spamton, happen to Kris, is only an option, one possible outcome. (I mean that metaphorically, not necessarily as something we could literally make happen in the game with our choices.)
Pink, however, is in chapter 5. Just like Spamton, she's an optional boss in the normal route : an ending where Kris and the Soul cooperate is ALSO an option, a possible outcome. But in the weird route, there's no Dark World. No Pink, no boss fight. The player has completely locked themselves out of the possibility of cooperating with Kris. It's not an option anymore.
2) Ralsei stuff
Okay well I'm not going to spend as long in this part lmao. In chapter 5, Ralsei is heavily implied to be transfem, with all that blue and pink and princesses and they/them pronouns. Pink, the ghost lightner, is a trans allegory of sorts, just like she and Hapstablook were as Mad Mew Mew and Mettaton respectively in Undertale. I think it's interesting they put the trans allegory as a secret boss in the chapter that focuses so much on Ralsei's character development.
But also I think it's important that Ralsei is the one who understands that Pink is a ghost lightner in a darkner body and explains to Pink that her body has her own wants and desires. That's such a long way from his speech to Tenna at the end of chapter 3... he's grown so much... He still sees himself as less important than Kris and Susie but the fact that he doesn't project this on Mew Mew while I think he would have in earlier chapters... that's character development! It's happening slowly, but it's happening!
3) Dess parallels if you squint
People have pointed out how Flowery is meant to parallel Rudy and Aqua Kris, but some have gone even further and said that every flower is a parallel to a member of the Dreemurr/Holiday families. This theory (I'll add the link later) goes into detail but the parallels are really impressive!
The music thing, Pink's violent tendencies, even her position as some sort of outcast... Those might symbolize who Dess used to be before her disappearance.
4) She's the only recruitable secret boss
So she'll be relevant later! We haven't seen the last of her.
5) She has a goddamn Shadow Crystal
Up until now the Crystals were given by a mysterious someone to special darkners. There has to be a reason why they gave it to HER specifically, especially after giving it to characters like Jevil and Spamton. Idk maybe think about that if you find her boring.
Bonus: her link to Friend
putting this as a bonus because it's more recent information but like. protein. egg. cats that hunt you down. people who really really like cats. Mew Mew KNOWS, she knows a lot more than she lets on. She knows about Friend. Maybe that's even why she was given the Crystal. Anyway, I don't think she was irrelevant AT ALL before this update, but people have even less of a reason to say that about her now.
Anyways thanks for coming to my Ted Talk I'm not angry anymore now. I love Pink 🩷
am I the only one for whom shipping means less wishing for characters to get together/become a canon couple (or polycule) and more being obsessed with the dynamic between the characters, or the romantic/queerplatonic potential of their relationship
Shout out to that one tumblr post that was like: "You know it's not just trans people who ponder their gender, it's healthy for cis people to take a look inside and be like! Yep that's all good!" And I read this post and was like.... like what do you look at inside though T O T??? I asked my boyfriend how he knew he was a boy and he said he just felt this unexplainable intrinsic feeling he was a boy... and I'm like... I HAVE GENUINELY NO IDEA WHAT YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT WTF 😭😭😭!!!!!!!! So apparently its like. Normal for people to feel this inexplicable 'Gender' feeling or whatever,,, I feel like how asexual people feel when they discover people around them aren't making up the fact they experience sexual arousal T O T
Obviously all my sciency stuff is just speculation! But I'm the type of person who believe that everything has a rationale behind it, and like an adopted child who is curious about their biological parents, I just am just interested in my origins! The field of genetics still is mostly just like,,,, hmmm we think this whatever MIGHT be a contributing factor to a person turning out this way... maybe. If you are more interested in the topic I discussed, just look up 'Genetic Memories in Animals' and there should be some more stuff OuO!
I'd love to hear how this 'inexplicable gender feeling' feels to gendered individuals! For those willing to share, I'd love to listen!
