Hey so as the economy continues to get worse in the next few years, gambling companies are going to go extra hardcore predatory as people become more desperate. Yes, even more than they already are. You have to promise me right now you're not going to fall for it. No gambling, okay?
This is going to be especially bad with prediction markets and sports gambling, and it's already really fucking bad. But it also goes for loot boxes, blind box collectables, trading card games, and ESPECIALLY gacha games.
yes labubus are gambling
I need everyone to remember:
The House Always Wins.
I used to read a lot of webcomics and I’ve had ideas about the one I would make but never actually wanted to make it.
In my mind, the protagonist is interviewing for a job at a chicken restaurant. She’s been unemployed and struggling for a while so she’s hungry. The interviewer scheduled the interview during their lunch break, so asks if it’s okay if they eat and offers some. They both order chicken.
Cut to the end of the interview. Our protagonist notices discarded bones on the interviewers plate. Our protagonist has no bones.
Did she eat the bones? Was she so hungry she swallowed the bones? Why are there only sometimes bones?
She resumes focus. The manager says “great! You know when your first day is, you’ve got your packet to fill out for HR, welcome aboard”
Our protag nervously smiles and leaves.
Later, she’s on her laptop with her sister looking at the menu. They’re flabbergasted. It just says “chicken”.
Later to figure out her start date, she calls the chicken restaurant. Her sister has helpfully written a script sideways in a notebook like it’s a teleprompter.
“Hello!” she says, “I’m so sorry I just remembered I have a doctors appointment tomorrow morning so that can’t be your first shift.”
“Tomorrow morning?” says the voice on the other end. “Your first shift is the 21st at 8:00”
“Oh!” She says, “my mistake. I’ll see you the 21st at 8:00!” Her sister is visible in the background doing a celebration dance.
“She did that” they chant as the dance. The panel shows them in the background. In the foreground is their calendar, showing a doctors appointment scheduled for 9:00 on the 21st.

yet another cosmic unfairness: a manatee is some kind of big fat dumpling beast of the sea that wants you to pet it so bad we had to make laws against doing just that for their safety

Getting angry about my hobbies is mind killer.
Getting angry about my hobbies is the little death that brings social obliteration.
I will face my anger.
I will permit it to pass over me and through me.
And when it has gone past, I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
Where the anger has gone there will be nothing. Only fun hobby will remain.
Tugging down his blue jeans as tens of thousands of heliostat mirrors angled the noonday sun in his direction, Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. was reportedly overheard saying “Time to become immortal” Monday while he exposed his perineum atop the Ivanpah 2 solar tower in the Mojave Desert. “Let’s see the Kennedy Curse try to take down a man with 92 billion lumens of photonic goodness surging into his taint,” the pantsless HHS secretary said as he triumphantly spread his legs from his perch on the tower’s boiler in conditions so hot a passing barn swallow was seen bursting into flames.
Full Story
Infinite Jest might kill me.
The section begins with a French-Canadian terrorist meeting with a U.S. agent. The French-Canadian’s terrorist agency knows he’s meeting with the U.S. agent, although it’s unclear whether his loyalty is actually to the U.S. or the Canadians. His questionable loyalties are explained in the most deliberately confusing language.
At one point in the chapter the text references a foot note.
That footnote briefly talks about French Canadian terrorist cells before referencing a different footnote.
That footnote is about the main character Hal (a young student athlete who plays tennis. I haven’t mentioned him yet because he’s tenuously relevant). Well, it’s not actually about Hal, it’s about one of his classmates attempting to plagiarize an article on French Canadian terrorists.
We are now four levels deep. Chapter -> footnote -> second footnote about plagiarism -> the article being plagiarized.
The third layer deep, the student committing the plagiarism, mentions that he has a cream on his forehead. We are told the chemical makeup of the cream but not what it is or does. Apparently this is described in foot note A (a parallel footnote layer to the article) but footnote A is nowhere in sight.
The article being plagiarized has its own footnotes, starting at 4, which are at the bottom of the page as expected. Just when I thought the literary structure was so convoluted and stupid it had to be a joke, they finally tell the story of a game where young Canadian boys play. It is a pulse pounding story of chicken. The children are supposed to jump across train tracks right before the train would hit them. Jump too early and you’re ostracized. Jump too late and your grease under the trains wheels.
It is a harrowing a touching story about peer pressure, toxic-bravado, and the way we pass down our trauma to those who come after us.
Finally, when it’s over, several pages later, footnote an appears telling us the plagiarist’s forehead cream is for acne.
After going 4-5 layers deep, we finally resume the main story about the two spies. What originally seemed ridiculous is now sad. The Canadian spy’s circumstances seem incredulous but they are his life. It isn’t funny. Jumping in front of the train cost him his legs, he’ll never walk again.
And in that somber moment, the text reveals there are roving herds of radioactive gerbils.
Infinite jest is going to kill me.
God I almost forgot:
The meeting is regarding two assassinations. One target a French Canadian terrorist leader, the other a medical attaché.
The French Canadian leader was not assassinated, but killed by accident when his house was burgled. We know this from an earlier chapter, but the text is almost begging you to forget that.
The medical attaché was assassinated by watching one of Hal’s Father’s movies, which apparently causes anyone who sees it to stare at it slack jawed until they die of thirst.
It is yet again heavily implied that Hal’s mother is a French Canadian terrorist who fucked anyone with a pulse. Neither his father nor his mother are mentioned by name, so the reader is left to figure this out from context, in what is already a 5 layer onion of a chapter.

Infinite jest is going to kill me.
I’m starting another attempt at reading infinite jest.
I knew when I read House of Leaves there was a lot of symbolism and unreliable narration that I missed, and layers to the story I didn’t understand, but I mostly got it.
Infinite Jest though. It’s a whole other beast.
The section on James’ O Incanenza the second’s movies alone is overwhelming with how many secrets it has. For one, one of his movies is an earlier chapter of the book. Also, several of his movies seem to imply he knew his wife was cheating on him? There’s yet another reference to medical attachés, who keep coming up but whose relevance is unclear to me.
That’s before you get into the documentary films he makes on the history of the region. O.N.A.N. (An acronym whose meaning I missed, but I suspect it’s been deliberately kept from me) has a period of continental reconstruction? At some point a giant baby attacks a city? Turkey farmers steal a bunch of trucks to and flee… something? Grammar prescriptivism is maybe a kind of American Imperialism of French Canada???
By accident and entire city is covered in trash????
Not to mention the section casually explains James O Inacdenza invented cold fusion.
The book tells you the “date” at the start of every chapter, but apparently American (ONAN??) has sold the rights to naming years, so you can’t make any kind of chronological order. And this dumbass list of movies is the only clue as to what order the years go in.
Oh, and it’s being somewhat heavily implied James’ wife, Hal’s mother, is a Canadian terrorist who only married James as a way to get into the country.
There are so many themes and throughlines. The drugs and drug use thing. Toblerone. The Canadian political landscape. VCR tapes? But the author seems to have made it deliberately opaque. It’s a book that says “oh you wanted to understand? Fuck you. Understand fuck you”
I need someone with a PHD in literature to read along with me and explain. Or maybe I’ll just fail this attempt to read it as well.

In a 1996 by-election, one of the candidates for Australia's parliament changed his name to Steve Grim-Reaper so he wouldn't get mixed up with other candidates
Update: Thanks to some brilliant suggestions from you all, we have an even better contender - A man who ran in the 1998 federal election named 'Prime Minister John Piss the Family Court and Legal Aid' who received a whopping 183 votes for the party 'Abolish Child Support'. Sounds like a lovely guy.
Unfortunately for Mr Prime Minister Piss, this name change came back to haunt him after he was denied a passport a few years later due to the name. This led to this quite incredible entry into Australia's case law that is still frequently cited today:
Unfortunately for Pisso, the court ruled that the government was right to deny him a passport, on the grounds that the phrase "Prime Minister" might be considered by some to be offensive.
Australia went on to change the laws around name changes as a result of Mr PM JP, making him the first and last Prime Minister Piss we'll likely ever see on the ballot in our lifetimes, and democracy is all the poorer for it.
Honourable mention to this headline from a South African newspaper:
And this quote from Time magazine:
There was more than one of them!
"BRUCE THE-FAMILY-COURT-REFUSES-MY-DAUGHTER'S-RIGHT-TO-KNOW-HER-FATHER"!!!!!
Truly one of the names of all time
That is a name that answers every question about why he's not allowed contact with his daughter, I feel.
HELLO???
How does this post keep getting weirder.
So we looked it up and yes, it was indeed the 'Dane' recording studio owner who attempted to stage a fascist uprising in Melbourne (of all places) in the 90s.
This was the last update we could find on him in the news, sounds like he's doing well for himself:
