im kind of an mlm blog???
Good morning!
Itâs been a while. How you all doing?Â
isnât it disgusting how american society only expects people to grieve for a few days until returning back to their everyday lives? that we should either overcome or repress our trauma of losing a loved one before the week is over with?
now im not saying that we should bring back the mourning periods of the victorian era BUT
Hospice workers and other related professionals ABSOLUTELY think we need to return to year long mourning periods! Structured time lines arenât perfect (grief isnât linear; it comes in slowly lulling waves) but a year is a hell of a lot better than a week. Moreover, it was a set of rules for the rest of society to abide by and that helped tremendously. Grief and shared grief make us panic; we arenât certain what to do. Structured mourning periods help. Its pre-laid boundaries and guidance from the past.Â
So anyway bring back mourning periods.Â
Jewish tradition has a very structured mourning period, and itâs structure could be useful to others. I believe it could help as a guide for others, especially since itâs not only structured for the mourners, but for their community.Â
The first thing we do is sit Shiva. Shiva is very intense mourning for those closest to the deceased (usually relatives but I would argue if you are close enough to the person it will hit just as hard). It lasts 7 days, where those closest to the deceased do not leave the house, and do not cook or clean. Instead the community brings over food and takes care of the normal day chores, as well as sit with the mourners to support them physically and emotionally. (For more religious folks there are prayers throughout the day at the house). We wear specific clothes for this week as well. It is deep deep mourning.Â
After that week begins the Sheloshim (30) for thirty days (in reality it is 23 days as the 7 days of Shiva count towards the 30 total days). The mourners return to society in terms of taking care of themselves and going to work and such, but avoids socializing/parties/concerts/seeking entertainment, to focus on the loss. For religious folk, there is a prayer said every day (mourners kaddish) during this time. This can still be done with other friends and family to give emotional support even just by being present.Â
For those mourning a parent (though I think this step is crucial for losing anyone close), the 11 months of mourning begins. You no longer are sequestering yourself from society, but you still spend time each day remembering the person. (in jewish tradition this means you keep saying the mourners kaddish every day for 11 months).
Why I think this is so so so important is the community aspect. Especially during Shiva. I remember a twitter thread that was posted here a while back about someone who lost their father and how they wouldnt have made it through if their friends hadnât come to support them as they were so deep in sorrow they couldnât take care of themselves (friends brought food, cleaned the house, etc). It almost exactly described Shiva, minus a religious aspect. And they described slowing being able to re-join society afterwards, like the 30 days.Â
Grief shouldnât be done alone, and mourners should be given support from their community to give them time and help them properly grieve and re-integrate with society.Â
When I made this into a personal blog, I moved everything to an archive page. I still get hate comments there. đ
This got me dying
who paid for this study bruh
itââs literally seasoning. thatâs it. thatâs what make food taste good.
Bro itâs more complex than just âey they used seasoningâÂ
Itâs HOW they used seasoning, compared to other areas of the world.Â
Indian seasoning does this neat color wheel of flavor, fitting a bunch of spices that are very DIFFERENT from each other, to create a huge range of complex flavor.Â
Meanwhile in Italy for instance, they tend to use flavors that are SIMILAR. For instance, Basil and Oregano, or Sweet fish with Sweet wine. It makes foods less likely to contrast weirdly in your mouth, and itâs the basis of why fancy european people pair red wines with steak and white wines with chicken. Savory with Savory, Light with Light. Â Â
But the Indian food steps it up a notch. The research is definitely worth a read.Â
â That like flavors should be combined for better dishesâan unspoken but popular hypothesis stipulated by recipe-building in North American, Western European, and Latin American culturesâis an idea essentially reversed in Indian cuisine. â
well yes, spices need to not just complement the food but contrast against each other. to get maximum flavour when cooking indian food:
1. use whole spices, dry roast small quantities of individual spices together and then grind them to a powder. balance is what youâre looking for, not just chucking in handfuls of seasonings willy nilly because quantity does not equal flavour when it comes to spicing indian food.Â
2. whole spices go in the oil first. always. also everything gets fried on its own before itâs chucked into the sauce/curry. even the curry base is started off by frying onions/ginger/garlic/tomatoes or any combination thereof. basicallyâŠFRY THAT SHIT. i donât know of any regional cuisine in india that uses stock for simmering. frying everything individually is how we add flavour instead. Â
3. indian food needs to be cooked long and slow for the flavours to really merge. donât skimp on the cooking time if you can because that makes a huge difference.Â
This was so enlightening
I feel a need to mention that the researchers for this study are NOT white, as stated above. Theyâre Indian. Itâs Indian people saying âwhy does our cuisine work and taste so vastly different than anywhere else in the world?â To quote from the article:
âResearchers Anupam Jaina, Rakhi N Kb, and Ganesh Bagler from the Indian Institute for Technology in Jodhpur ran a fine-tooth comb through TarlaDalal.comâa recipe database of more than 17,000 dishes that self-identifies as âIndiaâs #1 food siteââin attempts to decode the magic of your chicken tikka masala or aloo gobi.â
List of Jewish Holidays for Non-Jews
we got:Â
Jewish New Year
Jewish Apology Day
Nomadic Hut Appreciation Week
Bible Party Time
Greasy Foods and Fundamentalism Week
Jewish Arbor Day
Genocide Remembrance Day 1 (whimsical, silly)
Dry Crackers Week
Genocide Remembrance Day 2 (recent, solemn)
Day #33 For Some Reason
Harvest and Also Bible Day
These are all accurate, but just so people know, depending on your Minhag there are a few variations:Â
-Harvest and Also Bible Day is also sometimes known as Lactose Intolerance Aggravation Day
-Day #33 can also be referred to as Bonfire Haircut Archery Night
-And then of course, some people do Day Between Nomadic Hut Appreciation Week and Bible Party Time I That Is Somehow Both and Neither of These Things
There is one small inaccuracy
In reality, Genocide Remembrance Day 1 is, Attempted Genocide Remembrance Day. They didnât get us that time!!
